Could anyone else let me know if they read my post the same way Mazura did?

Hello!

Does this sound natural in English or it's just a mistake: Doing something was a great.?
I feel like that a should be removed, but I'm not totally sure.

Just a mistake.
Yes, it must be.

3:23 AM
Thanks :)

You might say that Caesar was one of the greats, but it is rather rare to use great as a noun not an adjective.

Exactly.

@snailboat I find him hard to read.

Anonymous
If they did intend to have a there, then they must have forgotten to finish the sentence. It was a great honor, for example.

3:40 AM
Makes sense. Most probably a typo. I proposed a change. :-)

4:27 AM
in all honesty @snailboat if you didn't put the polite introductory words it could be read that way :)
but, having said that, your point is valid however you want to word it
good question +1

Thanks :-)

4:49 AM
guys i need help
@snailboat hi
@skillpatrol

yes?

im new to driving and car stall when driving incline
i have hand break on , but sometimes i dnt push gas good enough
it only 1 month i have been driving

do not use the hand break

but man it goes down
u have manual car?
it upward slope

Yes I do, you must learn how to shift your feet quickly from the foot break.

Anonymous
4:52 AM
I've never driven a car with a manual transmission before.

but skill with handbreak on my foot is on race only
and other on clutch

This is the hardest thing to learn with a manual transmission :-)

could this sentence be more better "How are you? Hope you are now back from your annual holidays"
what hardest part?

Learning how to not roll back on a hill.

you are right skill

4:56 AM
Go and practice on some gently sloping hills first.

you are right.

Slowly work your way up to steeper ones.

skill how much u need on road to become professional?
i only drive 20 minutes a day

like riding a bike

lol

4:59 AM
once you "get it" it is easy

skill
review this line
"How are you? Hope you are now back from your annual holidays"

"Hope you enjoyed your holidays"
Is that^ what you are asking?

yes, thanks
so skill you have been driving since?
and does ur car used to stall in begining

Yes, everybody stalls in the beginning :-)

but for how long?
i only drive 20 minutes a day
is it ennough

5:03 AM
You need longer.

like
2 hours

1 hour should be enough.

mmm
okay thanks

Good luck :-)
Be careful.

thanks skill

Hello

Hi @skillpatrol

how are you?

I'm decent, thank you ^^
So, I don't know whether I should ask or not, but I'm making a transcript for a movie, so if have some free time right now, can you help me transcribe some of it?
@skillpatrol
?

sure

7:07 AM
Thank you, but I'm afraid it would take quite a lot of your time :/

askaway, I'll do as much as I can :-)

I'm getting it uploaded...

7:23 AM
I've transcribed movies before! It's kind of fun, but it takes me a long time.

Yeah
15' in and it already took me 3hrs to transcribe
:/

You could try to go through and get a first pass, all the stuff that's easy to hear, and then focus on the hard stuff and fill in the blanks.

Yeah, I'm doing so actually
Guys
Please take a look
At 3:06, what is the man yelling?
I can't make it out

Anonymous
If you're doing this as English listening practice, I would just skip that part.

Ok

7:38 AM
I can't tell what it's saying either.

I see

me neither

At 14:30, can you tell me what they say, all I can here is: - You own family tomb - What is he to you? - ... and then It's yours
?
I'm not sure what I heard is correct though

sounds the same to me

Anonymous
@johnchae Your own family tomb. What's he to you? The Sabbath is almost here. I have merely two hours. Please.

7:52 AM
Oh thank you, I never thought what I heard was pretty correct like that
:D
Actually I had to hear it for around 10 times to get that result
Also, guys
Was it quite easy to hear the lines for you guys, or you had to listen to them several times to get it right?

Anonymous
I couldn't hear Sabbath the first time.

Anonymous
I had to listen several times.

I couldn't hear even one word of "I have merely two hours"
He was speaking way too fast

sounds like "ye old anglish" to me :-)

Also, what does "The Sabbath is almost here" means? I know what Sabbath means, but what's with "is here"?
Does it mean: Today is The Sabbath day?

7:58 AM
approaching soon

Understood.

8:53 AM
@Mitch see. The time machine works.
That'd be one hundred bucks please.

wow! your price has come down

Q: How can I keep stray cats off my car?

ZaidWe have a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood and they possess an uncanny ability to know when a car has been cleaned for them to sit on and enjoy. Needless to say, the dirty, dusty paw marks they leave behind is a hassle to clean. The ideal solution would be to use a car cover, but to use it ...

Answer: burn your car.
DUH.

12:50 PM
@RegDwigнt Or just electrify the frame.

Is it home time yet?

Good morning, @Mr.Shiny.
I plan to do some work today.

oh, it's still morning? sighs wearily this is going to be a long day

Yep.

Good morning to you though.

12:52 PM
I offered to my boys that they could stay home from astronaut camp today. They took me up on it.
So now I'm pretending to work and play with my boys.
We got a new board game the other day though. It's called Tsuro and it's really fun especially for three or four people.

Yesterday my cold was at the "head feels like 10 tons of cotton about to explode; eyes feel like dessicated raisins under enough pressure to make diamonds". Today it's "everything hurts and it feels like I haven't slept in ten days"

Oh good lord.
Can you rest at all today?

we have a team meeting. So.... sorta? it's 3 hours long.

Wow.

because we work remotely this is the only time each week we get together.
maybe I'll feel better after coffee.

12:55 PM
Coffee will probably help.
Damn it. They are already arguing.
brb

lol. kids :)

I find that nose spray helps a lot.
Makes having a cold bearable.

I thought you meant nose spray for the arguing.
haha
It seems that the eldest wanted to engage in a "boss battle" and the littlest felt he had to participate.
So I taught the littlest to say "No, I don't want to play that."

@Cerberus I took a decongestant earlier. hopefully that's enough.
anyway I am going to get ready for my meeting. later!

Good luck! I hope you feel better. Maybe drink some tea with honey.

@KitZ.Fox worth a try. 'kids, stop arguing or I'll give you a nose spray'
I'd stop.

user204373
Good Morning!

@KitZ.Fox What??? Miss a day of astronaut camp? Why can't every day be astronaut camp?
@freebird Moin moin

Moin Mitch

user204373
I'm putting on my best attitude today :)

@Mitch I know, right?
I gambled and lost.

1:23 PM
To help with that, what does 'republicanism is dead' mean? something to do with the queen of England and removing the monarchy and something something.

user204373
@KitZ.Fox Hi hon.

@freebird Hi. "Hon" is a bit familiar for our relationship. How about "buddy" or "bro"?

@freebird Dude. Either you're a waitress in a southern diner or you just woke up next to her.

user204373
@Mitch lol.

user204373
@KitZ.Fox Sure. "Buddy" it is then.

user204373
1:25 PM
You guys are fun btw.

Isn't 'buddy' the name of the mini golden robot from Flash Gordon TV show in the late nineties?

user204373
Don't know. I was born in early nineties.

oops. I meant late seventies. so even worse.

user204373
:)

I'm impressed with the kidses these days who tend to know stuff like that from way before they were born. Then I think they should be putting that energy better to their studies than on crappy entertainment. Then I think they should get off my lawn. Then I take a nap.

1:30 PM
Buddy was the robot on ... not Flash Gordon. Not Battlestar Galactica ...
Buck Rogers.
I think.

Oh. Duh.
Buck rogers.
There was a lot of good scifi in the late seventies. Buck Rogers was not part of that.
There was no robot in BG, was there? Cylons don't count.
The queen's birthday? Good for her. But...stop it already. Sing the song 'Let It Go'. Really.

user204373
@Mitch Well, I don't watch much TV anyway. I have college, a part time job and also do modeling for a clothing line sometimes. Won't say which by the way.

user204373
Just come here in my free time while having my coffee.

@Mitch Moffet, I think? The kind of robot bear dog thing.
Muffit.

@KitZ.Fox oh. buddy had that same impression. but in gold.
@freebird oh. ha ha. no judgement on you. I'm here wasting my time too.

user204373
1:40 PM
@Mitch Nah. You guys know a lot about language. I appreciate that.

Astronaut camp for adults. That's my idea for the day. I'm clocking out. Naptime starts in 2 minutes

@Mitch I think they have that.

@KitZ.Fox opens one eye
Yeah, it's called the air force military academy
or biodome
or something
shuts other eye

user204373
What would be the exact opposite of "daddy issues" for dudes I mean, "mommy issues"? No word right?

Context? This is for a scholarly paper you're writing?

user204373
1:55 PM
No lol.

haha

user204373
Just something that popped into my blank mind this morning.

answer for yourself what you think daddy issues actually are (if they are anything at all), and see what dimensions it has, then try opposites in those dimensions. The classic comparison is the Oedipus complex, which really is mommy issues in the worst way, and at list in historical literature came first.

user204373
Ah that. Nice.

Electra complex is what the female counterpart is called. But that always struck me as lame (so much more has been discussed about the oedipus complex). but nowadays 'daddy issues' is all I hear, as though the labels are the thing rather than what they describe.

2:11 PM
guys
i need help in driving
please
:(
anyone?
on upwards slops my car stalled x2 :(

I can't help you with driving.

user204373
Driving what exactly? A car?

yes

Are you driving a standard transmission car?
Stick shift?

manual yes

2:13 PM
Well, let the clutch out more slowly.

no the trio handbreak, clutch and race
but i applied little gas the car stalled

Or rev the engine and release the handbrake after you've engaged the engine.
@Saladin Right.

twice and esp infront of a female driver
i hate my life

Because you let the clutch out too fast.

mmmm
fox are u a good driver?

2:14 PM
So don't park on hills.

u drive manual

Yes. I drive a standard.

no its upward slope i have to travel to reach my office

And yeah, it's awkward when you stall with passengers in the car.

so i have to stop my car on slope
its more of checkpost on a slope

2:14 PM
Then turn it in the other direction, so you are facing down the slope.

will you laugh If you were that female driver??
girls do that...silently

I don't laugh at people when they stall.

user204373
lol

mmm

I appreciate anyone who wants to actually drive a car (i.e., has a manual transmission).

2:15 PM
even when you want what can I do or people like me
Teach me:(
no i cannot avoid this slope

1 min ago, by Kit Z. Fox
Then turn it in the other direction, so you are facing down the slope.

no

user204373
I am a very good driver but I have a four wheel drive so no problems at slopes.

user204373
Is it 4x?

@Saladin Then get better at releasing the clutch.

2:17 PM
I want to face the challenge and what about if im to take this direction and my boss is with me on passenger seats
some occasions are unavoidable
thats not what i want
mmm
do u use to stall as new?

Practicing balancing on the clutch. You'll get the hang of it eventually.
@Saladin Yes, I'm pretty sure. I remember stalling in the middle of a left turn with a bus behind me. That was embarrassing.
I'd only been driving for a few weeks then.

But fox you know three things x1 handbreak 2 clutch 3 race

Yeah.

my main theme is that i give little gas and slowly remove foot from clutch so the car begin to take motion, and then release break at last

You can do that.
The brake helps keep the car from rolling backward.

2:20 PM
fox i only driver 20 minutes daily
is it litle?

You can also point the wheels roadward and release the brake so that if you do roll back, you the curb stops you.
@Saladin It's not the amount of time. It's what you are actually doing during that time. I drive 2.5 hours daily, but most of that is at speed, so no shifting, etc.

mmmmm

Q: What is the word for an instance of a test or query.. thing?

user81993Lets say I'm a teacher and I have a bunch of students who take a test. Each of them hands me a paper where they answer the questions on the test. What are those papers called?

Lets say I'm a teacher and I have a bunch of students who take a test. Each of them sits on a piece of wood with four smaller pieces of wood attached to its underside. What are those called?

so driving on single track road is more easy

@RegDwigнt I'm not sure what you're asking here. Is this a quiz or a test or a final exam? Also, is the teacher sitting or standing?
@Saladin driving on a single tack road is also a challenge because you don't know if you'll ever run over it.

2:25 PM
no im very sad today
female driver she was hot you know
really BOMB
fox do you give free driving classes?

Anyway, yes, this is the hardest maneuver to make with manual. Takes practice.
With car facing up hill, put parking brake on.
- go into first slowly
- press clutch down, move gear into first
- release clutch slowly
- add gas
- release parking brake slowly

Bombs are never hot. Bombs are actually quite cold. Have you ever touched a bomb? Because it's pretty fricken cold, lemme tellya. It's not called the Cold War for no reason, eh.
@Mitch wrong. The correct answer is "No. Lets not say your a teacher, cuz your quite obviously arent".

@RegDwigнt lmao
the worse that could have happened the girl would have stepped out of her car and sit in driving seat and drove the fucking car FOR me
they say cancerian are the worst driver.

@RegDwigнt warm it up first.

I get tensed.

2:30 PM
@Saladin You're taking it too seriously. It's just a skill like any other. They know it's not that easy.

@Mitch warming up is a multi-billion dollar scam.
Have you ever seen a lion warm up prior to chasing a gazelle?
Like, evah?

@Mitch is 20 min daily drive too little?

So it's a physical skill, which means it takes practice. All those steps I mentioned are down somewhat in parallel. (later in the list happen later, but still)

you guys are really nice
and fox.

Lion be like sleepy then lion be like um I could get me some foodstuffs hey there's a gazelle, then lion be like running 100 mph then eating the gazelle. Then lion be like sleepy again. The End.

2:31 PM
I thought you guys would make fun of me

@Saladin I am not fox.
I am trot at best.

lol

@Saladin ?? starting from a stop going up hill is 30 seconds max. do it 5 times (what I expect for you to get the hang of it.) then try a couple more times the next day. Done, you'll know the 'starting up hill in a manual' skill forever.

Alternatively, pay your Latino maid to run up the hill in half the time for half the price.

hahaha
latino are hot
and leggy

2:34 PM
Next skill... in a manual reversing up hill with 5 people in the car... on a one way street with a garbage truck coming up.

thanks @Mitch

And hurry up cuz in a couple months all Latino maids be shipped back to Mexico.
Which reminds me. I must be off to run Trump's campaign. Cheerio.

@RegDwigнt TO be frank I'm not paying attention to the lion's work out routine at that point. I'm loading as fast as I can.

shut-up that shitty scary backward reverse :(

@Saladin Avoid the slops, especially upward ones :) . It's been a while since I've driven manual, but give this a try. With handbrake and clutch engaged, gun the accelerator (a little too much is better than too little when you're learning). Slowly release the clutch until you sense the gears engage. Then with one hand on the steering wheel, use your other hand to release the handbrake. Gently release the clutch the rest of the way, adjusting power on the accelerator as needed.

2:39 PM
@Lawrence :)
very happy I just need to practice this. The order is so important, if i release break first then car goes back but with little race already given releasing break car doesn't go back.
But @Lawrence i got embarrassed and sad because of other people
i get nervous

@Saladin It's like playing the piano. Until you're good at it, you just have to grin and bear it, or you won't be able to get started (no pun intended) so that one day you'll be good at it. If it helps, focus on the cars and road, and not the occupants of the cars around you.

@Lawrence how long have you been driving?
but @Lawrence as a man how can you ignore a hot female occupant?

@Saladin More than a couple of decades. If you have a sign on your car (L plates or equivalent), people will see it and make allowances. Some might be impatient - just let those pass. Wave them on if need be.

At start how often you used to drive daily?
like avg # of hours

@Saladin I don't spend a lot of time looking at the occupants of cars, so I don't even know their gender most of the time.
It's easy to ignore what you don't notice. :)
@Saladin Now that's starting to tax the memory.
I remember taking driving lessons - if you can afford them, they're a good source of practical advice, especially those that have two sets of pedals (one for you, one for the instructor). They can drive the car, and you can listen and learn. It may also help with the embarrassment you're feeling.
After that, it's not really a matter of how many hours a day. Just drive when you can. Like a musical instrument, eventually the car will just be something you use. When you can think about where you're going instead of which order to coordinate your hands and feet, you know you're improving.
Having said all that, practice in less crowded areas until you're more confident.

user204373
2:53 PM
@Saladin Get a friend to sit with you while practicing. It will boost your confidence. You can't do that when you are going for work though. Maybe pick up someone who goes to the same workplace as you and knows how to drive?

@Saladin yes, the last thing you do is release the hand brake, slowly. You will already have forward power (from releasing the clutch and giving gas at the same time. As @Lawrence said, a little more gas than usual, the hand break is controlling the forward movement at that point.
@Saladin as a learner you shouldn't have distractions, especially for a very involved procedure like the one you're describing.

@Saladin It sounds like you've just passed your written test and haven't got to your driving test yet. In your country, don't you need an experienced driver in the car with you at this point when you drive?

@freebird excellent advice I feel lonely and scared when I'm alone
@Mitch mmm but it make me so strange that other people do it so fast and clean, like on slope i get me 5 or 10 seconds to move a car
@Lawrence my country is Pakistan, everything goes here:)
but I have already gotten basic course from my dad office driver.
No i'm on my own.
my biggest fear is car stalling:(
i think about it everytime

user204373
Before driving I used to play Need for speed in stick shift. It is nothing but still give some perspective on how to handle gears.

user204373
:)

3:01 PM
@Saladin Here's something to try: once you get the hill start going (gunning the accelerator is the trick to getting the hang of this initially), push in the clutch until you're at a standstill. Stay there for 2 seconds just balancing on both pedals (no handbrake), then let the clutch out until you're moving forward a couple of meters. Keep inching up the slope this way, pausing every few meters using just the clutch.

funny thing i most of days move car clean from upward climb slope but this time i don't know for someone reason my heart was telling me i will fail and fail and exactly it happened my car stalled twice on upward climb.

@Saladin other people have had more practice (also just doing it hundreds of times out of necessity). you just need to practice 5 times in successions (within the course of ten minutes) to get easier at it. Your situation may also be confounded by having to do this wwhile being parked between two cars. That makes it harder. If you can, try it first wwhere there are no cars right in fron and right behind.
@Saladin That is really not a big deal. So what? Who cares? Just start the car again.
@Saladin so put on the foot brake, and then also the parking (hand) brake. Then you can go through the procedure again of getting forward power (without moving) and then slowly releasing the hand break.

@Lawrence my asshole driver didn't teach me upward climb for my first test on that climb i went at least 20 cm back to point i was on flat road at that i don't know how to use handbreak i just used clutch and race it was so hard
you guys are really kind I'm must say that. I have got lot to digest from here
I will keep you updated.

user204373
Good luck!

thanks @freebird

It's a VERY NICE DAY TODAY! Let's play!
Oh noes. Now it is a sad day.
:(
Because I just found out that Prince died.

My condolences.

OK, but now I know where @MattE.Эллен and I will double date when I visit the UK: at a naked restaurant. Thank you, Britain.

1 hour later…
6:53 PM
That's too young.

Way too young.

7:24 PM
@freebird I think that I can speak for myself here when I say that @MattE.Эллен is a really great guy, if in fact you are mixing me up with him. If not, then he's kind of a jerk.
@KitZ.Fox "I don’t know about you, but if there’s one thing that’s always bugged me about eating in restaurants it's having to wear clothes. ...There will also be food, though it’s not immediately clear what will be served."
@KitZ.Fox also Chyna
Also apparently there's an insanely popular hoodie that I am supposed to buy since it's the "greatest hoodie ever made"
“once you try it on, the quality really does take you by surprise. It's unlike any hoodie — or any other piece of clothing — I've ever owned. A must-have.”
That sounds really good. The evidence is just overwhelming

crl
how would you say in english: "When I type on this laptop keyboard the keys [ s'enfoncent (in french) / slightly go down ] and it's annoying" sink?
Prince didn't even smoke?

7:44 PM
@Mitch yeah I saw that yesterday. Also very sad. I remember that she refused to do some sexy wrestling thing because she wanted her showmanship to be family friendly.
@crl sink seems right.

crl
ah, ok thanks, I thought it was only for fluids/water :)

Sounds like the touch is wrong.
@Mitch I need that. Now.

crl
not just one, the left part of the keyboard, but it's too late to change this one, I'll maybe try to fix it

@crl nah, you can sink a putt (golf) or sink a basket (basketball), or sink down into a chair.
@crl so is the action messed up? Like it doesn't respond to posing in the way you expect?

crl
it responds well, but it's just a bit annoying to type with, it's not 'rigid' enough

7:59 PM
@KitZ.Fox or sink a nail, or sink two watches, or sinkhole, or in sink erator
@KitZ.Fox I'm conflicted. I want it terribly, but I just don't wear hoods. You'd likely suggest that I just don't keep the hood up, but I can't wear it knowing it's there.

crl
yea hoods are the past, or the rappers, or gothics

Would you ask a vegetarian to put a little meat on their plate, but they just don't have to eat it?
Would you ask an executioner to take just a little off the top?
Would you ask an Indy 500 race car driver to come to a complete stop at a 4-way stop even if no one is there?
Exactly.
