So if Newtonian mechanics + QM commutator ⇒ Maxwell's equations, shouldn't you be able to derive Lorentz invariance and obtain a relativistically invariant QM theory?

Hey, @vzn: I'd recommend not sending unsolicited invites to users to join your room. At least one user reported (to the moderation team) that they felt a tad awkward that you directly sent them an invite without providing any context beforehand.

@Blue there is no restriction on invites and users are free to ignore them which is typically the case. have typically been pasting context into this room.

@vzn 1. The software doesn't have any restrictions on invites per se, but unsolicited invites are considered to be spam, especially when you don't explicitly mention what exactly you invited them for. 2. If someone is reporting feeling uncomfortable you really should consider that to be an actual possibility rather than going defensive.

If you want to invite an user to your room, the best option is to first talk to them in a more public room, mention the topic you want to discuss and copy paste the link to your room. They can join if they find the topic interesting.

A: How do I spread the news of my new chat room?

Monica CellioTreat your chat room the same way you would treat any other thing you want to advertise -- a question (maybe on another network site), a blog post, a music download, or whatever. Mention it in places where that information would be welcome, and in a non-disruptive way. For example, if your chat...

@Blue will take what you are saying seriously but recognize it as made up courtesy ideas by a mod and not official SE policy anywhere. have been inviting ppl for yrs into this room with varying results, did someone email you to complain? invitations are a friendly gesture & think they are basically harmless if the user ignores it.

No, but someone just pinged me in a one-to-one room about this (~30 mins ago).

They were clueless what you invited them for.

Not that it's a big deal this time, but it would be nice to keep this in mind.

I definitely do think it was a friendly gesture on your part. No debates about that. I'm just saying that you should consider inviting users in a more transparent way so that they don't feel creeped out. :)

vzn
@Blue thx for being a (new) mod. think that you get a lot of mod requests that are probably not acted on. think you should see this as one of them. dont know about this new idea of using private 1-1 rooms for mod discussions (cf Chair etc) think they are rare. just read the meta post and its related but didnt specifically mention the chat room invite feature. it is not your job to make sure that no user is ever surprised on SE. which presumably happens regularly esp with new users.

Certainly. But it's definitely my duty to make sure I can make chat a more amicable and transparent place for new users. This isn't an attack on you.

generally rarely invite users, its never been an issue noted by mods before, but it seems everything is subject to mod supervision/ oversight on here isnt it? anyway will take your feedback seriously.

@vzn Thank you.

@Blue btw liked/ +1 your meta post on boosting chat room engagement, have had similar feelings, hope to see more momentum along those lines, suggest a chat room ad would be very helpful, encouraged Chair to make one etc

@vzn Yeah, I too see some potential in the chat rooms. :)

I'm not getting much time to create a chat room ad, true. :/

Will have a go at creating an ad during my upcoming holidays. My graphic design skills suck tho. :P

@vzn Yes, I read that blog article before. :)

@Blue cool will contribute if you write about it on the chat. people seem to get intimidated sometimes by the "job" but its actually really easy, no harder than making memes, which are prolific these days.

@Chair have some experience with this. have seen an ad with striking image outperform 2-1 something else more utilitarian in clicks (not surprisingly). therefore suggest any striking physics images, of which there are many, (am thinking off top of head of eg heatmap images of atom corrals or lasers etc) with very high-contrast easy-to-read text on top of it, the slogan is not so important, but sell the sizzle, not the steak :)

@vzn That sounds like a good idea, yeah. Any nice physics-y picture with a good tagline would do.

vzn
@Blue yeah. have two pics in mind, it would be hard to find 1 of them again but we can discuss it further sometime when you have time, ps its great that some mods like/ engage with chat, think theyre better at the job :) ... re ads, the only goal is to get ppl to click, really nothing more, its kind of primal, no need to overthink it...

@vzn Sure, we can discuss it sometime (I'll mention it in the hBar). Anyway, ttyl. Gotta complete my homework now. :)
