A: Cant install Ubuntu. How do you format a Windows HDD

MitchIf you don't want windows, then when you get to the installation type screen, just choose Erase disk and install Ubuntu. If you want more control on size of partition and swap, then choose Something else, which will let you do manual partitioning.

@heldeman, please don't mark an answer to be correct with green check if it does not solve the problem. This will be misleading to others with similar issues. Mitch, consider removing the answer, based on heldman's comment above.

@gertvdijk The OP didn't say which option he choose, that's why I included both options.
@user68186 The OP didn't say which option he choose, that's why I included both options.
How did your friend format the hard drive?
I don't know why everybody rushes with the down-vote, before knowing all the facts. His friend could have used the something else option.

Mitch, OP said in the question "I choose on the whole HDD" (sic). The question was not about which option to choose. It was about the unexpected reboot. Your answer does not address this issue at all. If you edit your answer, I will withdraw the down-vote.

@user68186 I would want to know what did his friend do, because I feel that there is something we don't know.

Fair enough Mitch. It is very odd that the Live system would reboot before install. The problem may be with the original partition table/ format resulting in an exception at the format stage it and caused the reboot. If so, your question, on how the friend formatted the HDD is very pertinent.

@user68186 I've been doing this for over 30 years, and I've seen my share of weird :)

I'm here

I have to go for a while, when I come back if I see that you're still available I buzz you.

I had a bit of a trouble logging into stackexchange. Sorry about the delay.

I'm back

welcome back

I think that something is not right about this question, because the OP accepted right after I posted. I feel that he saw something in the image, that made him realize maybe what he has done wrong.
That's why I'd like to know what his friend has done to solve the issue for him.

I think this question is what used to be closed as "too localized". I don't see that choice in close vote any more. I wanted OP to post screen-shot of gparted to see what was going on. Now we will never know what was the problem with the hard drive.

My guess would be, and it happened with me a lot of times, I choose the fist option, erase and install, but it actually does not erase. I had that happen with a drive that had Debian, and tried Ubuntu, and the only way that I got it going, is by using a boot CD that I've made with bunch of utilities, and write zeros to the MBR.

brb

So maybe when he choose something else, and tried it, that did it for him.

It is quite possible the something else did it. Or they may have done something like you and zeroed out the MBR. I see your excellent contribution to this forum, many with pictures and clear explanations, all the time and have great respect for you. Sorry about the down vote.
Do you know why we changed the close-vote categories? I was thinking of voting to close this question as too localized, but that is now gone. Off-topic seems too harsh. Is this the right category for this kind of questions? Thanks.

Don't worry about the downvote. I just like to know why, so I can fix it if something is wrong. As far as close-votes categories, I have no idea.

I strongly felt that you couldn't address the reboot issue put in the question in your answer. You are doing a great job here. I wish I had the depth of knowledge together with the eye for details you have. There are many people who know a lot of things but very few of them have the patience to take screenshots and then edit them with arrows and texts, and then writeup excellent answers using images. It was nice talking to you.

Thanks. Same here.
Before you go, can you look at this, and tell me if you see anything wrong?

A: What GUI are there for Axel or for other such downloaders that use multiple connections?

MitchTry flareGet. Flareget is a full featured, multi-threaded and multi-segment download manager and accelerator. To install click FlareGet Or download from SourceForge.

OK. Let me take a look.

Thanks
I think someone is on a downvote spree

I have no idea about Axel and I can't answer the question. However, from what I understood from the question, your answer seems a valid one. The OP has asked for a GUI for Axel or other such downloader. Your answer falls under the second category. I'd at least put a comment and explain the downvote. I see no reason for it. May be someone doesn't like flaregate :)

Thanks.. Got get some sleep.. Good Night.

Take care and goodnight!
