Q: How to assign values to a polygon layer based on nearest point in a point layer?

JanusI have a point file depicting groundstations for rainfall measurment. I also have a polygon file representing districts of a state. I want to assign rainfall values in a particular district based on the station located there. I understand this can be achieved through a spatial join. However, I al...

I am looking for an answer to this exact closed question. Could be in ArcGIS or QGIS. Does anyone know a duplicate post of this? Thanks.

@AndreSilva I'm not seeing other questions like this, but I'd do it with GenerateNearTable in ArcGIS (requires Info/Advanced license). Only hang up is how to measure what is closer for multiple points within a polygon. Technically the distance is 0 since they intersect, so would you want closest to centroid, boundary, etc.?

Does anyone have any experience with using Informix IDS?

@EvilGenius, thanks. So I guess it is a similar question. I have more polygons than points; some points are indeed intersecting some of the polygons, but some polygons do not have any point in them. I was thinking measuring the distance between the polygons' centroids and points, find the minimum distance, and assign the nearest point's value to the polygon. I'd ask a question, but thought this is basic and someone already asked it. Will take a look on the tool you mentioned.

A: Spatial join geotagged images to preexisting point shapefile?

ProudGISThe spatial join in QGIS seems to have a problem when joining 2 point geometries. A plug-in called NNJoin can handle any geometry combinations and can perform a join on nearest neighbour rather than on intersection. It doesn't offer any options for choosing which attributes to join however, so ...

@AndreSilva I just reduced the scope on the first question you linked to so that it was focussed on ArcGIS Desktop, and re-opened it as below.

@AndreSilva The scope of the second one is not possible to reduce because there are already answers for both QGIS and ArcGIS for Desktop so I've closed that one as too broad.
