Map Projection Selection Tool- choose which distortion type you want to minimize (area, distance, shape, etc.) and draw your area of interest on this world map. The tool suggests appropriate projections to use, complete with easy to copy & paste PROJ4 string, plus the suggestions change immediately as you tweak the controls.

This very cool app brought to us courtesy of Bojan Šavrič, a PhD student in geography at Oregon State University. Thanks Bojan! (found by way of Directions Magazine newsletter, who in turn discovered it on GIS Lounge)

Anyone who enjoys that proj selection tool, should also have a look at FlexProjector which interactively lets one explore various world projections, tweak their parameters, and even invent new projections while displaying results on screen immediately.
