what is your opinion of Mechanism design? do you think MD has the potential to solve problems outside of economics/auctions?

I am asking this question because I am considering using the theory of mechanism design to my research

but so far MD has given me the impression that it can solve only simple versions of problems (in a relative way of speaking)

@johnny09: MD can be painfully abstract as well as very applied. Any policy design or pricing scheme can be thought of as a MD problem. Big companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft hire microeconomic theorists from top schools to work on applying MD to various real world problems. Some of the most well known applications of MD include keyword auction at Google AdSense and FB, auctions at eBay, (public) school choice in the U.S., and kidney exchange networks.
