@MrPete I'm gonna give you a few pointers on how to use chat, if that's alright.
First, it's usually much better to put out your thoughts a few sentences at a time send a message and then continue on.
This lets others reply to specific parts, which this chat engine does a great job of organizing replies.
Second, quotes can be made by preceding the message with a >. So > message looks like:

Also, you can just drop a chat message permalink and it will block quote automatically. So https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/48005479#48005479 becomes:
1 min ago, by fredsbend
