Q: Is this a valid and reasonable code comment? (Hungarian Notation)

DiggleScarrStarted a new job, provided my first PR and had a lot of review comments which I personally just consider frivolous. Whilst it's easy to fix personally I do not believe this is Hungarian Notation and it is just sensible variable naming. Here is the line of code: final List resultTermsList = Co...

@DanielRendon If we were on CodeReview, I'd tell you that naming IfUserNameExists this way is quite weird, because then you use if(IfUserNameExists (if if), and you can write return dt.Rows.Count > 0; instead of if(dt.Rows.Count > 0) return true; else return false;Rafalon 10 secs ago

@Donald.McLean Just wanted to let you know I found a home I liked.
Trying to schedule a visit tomorrow, if I like it I'll try to get you some pictures.

@202_accepted Excellent. Home buying is some of the scariest stuff in the universe, but also some of the most satisfying.

I'm using a very experienced agent (he has worked with my boss several times), and he's trying to make it as easy as possible.

Having an unflappable loan officer is also good.

Yeah, he's been doing this for 25 years or more, and from what my boss says he's the #1 in the area (and owns the areas biggest company for it).
And my loan officer has been doing this a long time, too. (He also knows ALL the ins-and-outs of the industry.)
He's doing some creative things to get me approved and get my rates lowered.

hey @202_accepted did the work situation change at all?

I was told "not to let that influence any decisions I am planning to make, but no. That said, I do have some freelancing gigs I'm getting ready to sign contracts for that will more than make up for my salary.

@202_accepted Where do you work now?

@syb0rg A finance company in Toledo, OH.

@202_accepted Would you be willing to switch jobs? I might be able to refer you to Amazon
Trying to see if there are any jobs in OH for ya

I refuse to work for Amazon on principle, unfortunately. I've got a few contracts I'm about to start on that will net me far more than my salary, and I'm probably going to start working "Freelance" / "Contractor" style full-time.

2:42 PM
@syb0rg you live in MN don't you?

@202_accepted Sounds good, what's so bad about Amazon though?
@Malachi I do

do you have a Skype or Google Hangouts that you would be willing to share?

@syb0rg I've read some terrible reviews and testimony of the workplace-practices there. Call me an alarmist, but I just don't want to risk it. (From what I understand, many areas of the company are very hostile.)

@Malachi Sadly no, I don't use either of those

I just moved back to MN about 2 months ago now
I know there are a few of us that live in MN and was hoping to meet some of you in person.

2:44 PM
@202_accepted I was actually very concerned about that too when I started, working here for a bit now I can thankfully say it would be highly unlikely you would encounter that working for corporate
Reading those reviews unfortunately exposes you to selection bias
You don't necessarily get the good stories to balance out the bad, due to the nature of how journalism works
@Malachi Possibly, were in MN though? It's a big state haha

Isanti

@syb0rg Aye, I'm a pretty skeptical person, I've always worked for small-to-mid sized organizations (as small as 6 employees, as large as 1k total). I always liked the smaller companies as it stood. I'm sure Amazon would pay me well enough...I don't know.

@Malachi Oof you're like an hour away from the cities lol

I work in Apple Valley....lol
I don't have to go in today until noon, but might have to work into the wee hours of the morning

@Malachi Jeez your commute must suck... do you work remotely much?

2:49 PM
probably not during the winter....unfortunately. I work for a company that revolves around school systems in other states

@Malachi Hm, well if you're ever in the area feel free to swing by T3 during the work day
My team is hiring too if you're looking for an entry point/referral

@syb0rg :P Oh I SEE, you offer him a referral but not me? (I kid.)

T3? where abouts is that? I am a QA Engineer what kind of SDLC process do you have in Place?
looks like it might be closer

so your company handles real estate?
I am a little confused, it appears that that building is like an open office?

2:57 PM
@Malachi No, Amazon leases the top 3 floors
Other companies own the bottom 2, the 4th floor is empty

oh, I see. you work for Amazon. what are the perks?

@Malachi I'm confused what you mean by SDLC process? SDLC is a process itself?

so if I show up, just ask for syb0rg? lol

@Malachi No one will know who that is haha
@Malachi The main perk is pay, but the benefits are pretty good too

what is the Release process?

3:01 PM
:46819249 Oh, well we have a pipeline through which code changes run... the devo parts are continuous deployment and the prod parts are more manual unfortunately... our team is working on that part
The pipeline handles all the testing, so we have unit tests to build, integration tests in the first part of the pipeline (alpha/beta), performance tests after that (gamma) and then diff checks to go to prod

3:45 PM
@Malachi We don't really have dedicated QA's here, they exist but for the most part SDE's can do basically the same thing (implementing automated testing)

yes and no.
what about user acceptance testing, or plain old Quality Assurance, or smoke testing
I mean you can do a lot with Automated testing, but who tests new features from a customer stand point?
and then directs the automation efforts?

TBH my team used to be quite underfunded within Amazon and only now we are just being brought back up to speed... so one of the things that we are working on currently is improving the testing of our platform (my team works on tax btw, that's all we focus on)
@Malachi So right now we create tests in parallel with the creation of new features

@amanda-ferrari, precisely what Vladimir referred to. (Note that he did not mention that, but the document is actually a set of rules to write "core" Go code, which many consider to be the Go style guide.) I would cite the most relevant bit from there: «The name need not be as descriptive as that of a method argument, as its role is obvious and serves no documentary purpose.
