@tdelaney That's different; what classes do behind the scenes doesn't affect readability. Being Pythonic is about readability and clear intent. Ask any seasoned developer during code review which one they would prefer. You're entitled to your opinion but I assure you 9/10 developers would say to use an if statement and not an unconventional dictionary approach — cheezits 44 secs ago

Does the code work? Do you need a code review to clean it up? Then post on codereview.stackexchange.com instead. — Some programmer dude 5 secs ago
As your code "works", stackoverflow isn't really the correct site to ask about coding styles. This is because there is no single "right" answer. I suggest that you remove the question from here, and ask it on the Code Review site codereview.stackexchange.com .I think that is a better forum in this case. FWIW, I don't think that your method should be checking to see if it's being run by a unit test. Things like mocks and IOC were designed to avoid this. — DeanOC just now

@DanPantry To be fair, at no point did I suggest that it was a "good" practice, the whole purpose of the query-string authentication was to demonstrate when and how the dev/tester should work together on a solution.
> Typically, in this scenario, this is where the developer and tester would work together on a solution, one of which might be a very simple API call to do login: pass a username and password, then it logs that session in.
> It can also use a POST to a form to login, if we wanted, though that is far more complex. Due to the ASP.NET event validation, it is far easier to virtually create the UI form in that case, and submit it. Instead, what we did is query-string based to support the testers use-case, and make it easy to do the testing, while also retaining most of our security.
The implied text is that one would prefer a POST to the query-string, but it was far easier to demonstrate with the query-string.

@202_accepted IIRC, Bing's translator kind of works best with a specific "variant" of German, and Google's works best with another. I've heard stories about how one works fairly consistently well in one region, but the other works better in another.
So...

@Hosch250 I would prefer to use Google's translation API, but it's not free so it's out of the question.

Yeah.

So I'll deal with what I've got.

The cool thing could be to offload that onto the client. They use Bing by default, but if they want to pay, they can provide their credentials and a formatted link that you use.
Kind of like how you can set up a search engine for any website in your browser.

I thought about it, but this isn't anything complex, mostly designed to do the one thing I wanted. I thought about adding an option for "Translation Provider" in the settings.

1:42 PM
I think this has quite a bit of potential as a commercial tool, actually, with the right marketing.
So, it all depends where you want to take it.

@CaptainObvious Does not link to the problem.

@Zeta That's actually an interesting problem.

@202_accepted was?

Basically, you need to make sure you cover 10 blocks, and that the N/S and E/W all cancel each other.

@Vogel612 That was supposed to say "How does this look?" lol

1:46 PM
One thing the statement doesn't make clear: how many blocks does a number represent? Can you get a string like ['n','n','n'] representing North for 3 blocks?

that's a completely valid translation. It's not like one can make a lot of mistakes when translating so simple structures between languages as closely related as German and English

Ah, cool.
Was just curious, as the Bing translator seems to be iffy. :)

@Hosch250 ['n', 'n', 'n'] represents going north for three blocks. Your function should yield false.

@Zeta Right.
The other option is that could be just ['n'] because you don't change direction.

That's not in the kata description. A single character in the array represents moving a single block.

1:50 PM
@Zeta Neither is that in the description.
It says 1-letter strings, but it doesn't state that a single letter represents a single block.
In other words, the poor developer of that app is screwed.

@Hosch250 It does now.

We usually use GCC for usual builds and Clang for static analysis. Qt as GUI toolkit. And only Linux.

@sineemore I think most of the time they talk about it while I am not within earshot, but I think it helps even more so for me because I am a QA Engineer. so depending on the level of Testing/QA....

@sineemore It's a respect thing. I always treat my employers with respect and most of the time they return the favour.

I am in the weird area between Dev and QA

What is QA engineer?

Quality Assurance.

3:54 PM
I am not like other QA...lol

Quality Assurance Engineer.

I can dig into code, or write test automation.

Wow, it seems so close to CR.

QA Analyst does more surface testing, or push button testing, IMO
I also dig into Database structure/design, SQL Scripts, Etc.

@sineemore Part of the time, yes.

Q: My controller has lots of dependencies, how can I clean that up?

Mike AI have an application that is written using c# on the top of ASP.NET MVC 5 framework. I installed and setup Unity.Mvc package which allows me to do dependency injection. I have the following code in one of my controller. Although this code seems pretty clean to me, there are few things that are ...

some interviews I have been on Mentioned it, or I have brought it up because it went along with an answer to one of their questions.

@CaptainObvious Easy. Just copy/paste all the dependencies into your project and you're no longer depending on them.

So for every project that runs on Linux the whole Linux kernel? :P

@Zeta Sure.
At least now your code will be stable.

Hello

3:59 PM
/jk

Hi bruglesco.

@bruglesco Hi, welcome to The 2nd Monitor.

Thank you

random thing: it is possible to use & nbsp ; (remove spaces) in QA body to add newlines/paddings without text.

No
you have to use \n
or the corresponding code for it

4:05 PM
actually... it is
because markdown supports a limited subset of HTML

..oh, this is specific to S/O

not sure about character escapes, actually

In HTML you wouldn't want to use non breaking space for this
You'd want to use &#10;
Which is line feed
&#13; is carriage return

nbsp is non breaking space

or you just end your line with two spaces, which is parsed into a <br> for markdowni

4:07 PM
@sineemore That sounds like an XY problem. What's your goal?

@sineemore that's my point, you wouldn't want to use nbsp for newlines or paddings.

if you want to space something evenly you should use a codeblock...

It doesn't guarantee a newline or padding because nbsp's rendering depends on the container size, the screen size, etc... whereas a cr/lf guarantees a new line

^^

@Zeta
https://codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/184428/linux-backup-script-shell/192512
Line with "See, that works just fine."
See raw source (:

4:09 PM
Those are new lines because you've put two empty lines with an empty space.
If you were to remove the &nbsp; you'd have basically the same result

@sineemore <br>?

Hm, maybe. I will try it right now..

aha, I see. You just want a really big, non standard line break in Markdown.
Why?

It is related to answer context.

(lf/cr are removed in the markdown but the nbsp isn't so you end up with 3 'empty' lines - one of which actually just has an empty space)

4:10 PM
See line above that

@Zeta if Visual C++ is non-conforming would you recommend a beginner abandon it and use something else?

I would recommend using a preformatted block to demonstrate this rather than trying to hack around formatted text
Preformatted blocks emphasize the point better anyway: It's a monospace font and is how code will appear

@sineemore The large empty space makes your post fluttered. Try headings instead of so much whitespace, that keeps similar topics grouped.

The large empty space is to demonstrate why you should add an extra newline between code segments
> To get reader attention add one more newline before and after your comment.
It definitely gets my attention but that attention is not good attention :)

@bruglesco I'd suggest a beginner to make sure that /Za /permissive- is set (/Za = no C++ extensions, /permissive- = don't be permissive). In the project settings, that's somewhere in the C++ section, don't have VC++ at hand to look it up :/.

4:14 PM
@DanPantry yay, that works then.

Otherwise you learn VC++, not C++. This can be fine if you will always work in a Microsoft environment, but it will be surprising if you use other compilers.

I'll try not to use that again though
There is so much to explore about SE and CR in particular (:

@Zeta thank you for the suggestion

@bruglesco You're welcome. Keep in mind that most tutorials, books or other learning material usually works along a specific IDE or compiler. As long as the beginner follows the books, they should probably stay close to the ones recommended. Afterwards they can try several and check which one they like most.

4:29 PM
Tutorials are great for learning a trick or learning the basics on something. They don't usually tell you the 'right way'.

@Mast So much that ^

@Mast Young Zeta could have used that comment. I've read a lot of C++ tutorials back in the day. My C++ code got a lot more idiomatic after I finally read a proper book.
Most C++ tutorials back then were "Here's how to write C with classes".

@Mast that's actually what led me to CR. I read as many reviews as I can and learn idioms and practices from the source and the reviews and google searches of what I dont get.
I did just start on Scott Meyer's books. But I understand they're very authoritative.

@bruglesco He wrote a couple of great books, yea.

@bruglesco The new one on C++11/C++14?

4:38 PM
Effective C++
So no an older one

It's still valid, so no worries (and I just noticed that I have to check whether we accidentally violated item 9 on Monday).

The goal is to work through them all any way

@bruglesco Which version? And did you know there's a More Effective C++ as well?
Effective C++, Effective C++ in an embedded environment, Effective Modern C++, More Effective C++, all by Scott.
And yes, I got them all.

2nd edition. And yeah. My goal is to read em all.

@bruglesco Does that include C++03?
Because my 3rd edition is from 2005, so I imagine 2nd edition is quite old.
On a side note, I'm considering getting a CS bachelor's degree on the side. Would it be worth anything considering I come from a non-CS field and much older than the average student?

4:58 PM
@Mast you're right. Which is prolly why i was able to get it for like 3 dollars

My current career is kind of a dead end.

@Mast Always worth something, though may not be much.
IIUC it's almost a requisite in NL.

Database design is hard and I hate myself
4

@DanPantry You're just looking at it all wrong. ;)

@202_accepted Yea, that's kind of what I figured. But with the amount of freshers students getting started each year, I may just have missed my window of opportunity already.

4:59 PM
@Mast Definitely. You know much more than the average student.

Q: DIV won't scroll all the way down

TakeDowni have finally finished my menu and ,functionally, it fully worked, until I checked it on my phone.When I expanded all of the the menus, the div will scroll just a few pixels. I think my problem comes from the fact that some elements have overflow: hidden and that the body and html height is set ...

@DanPantry Database design is confusing at times. Not necessarily hard.

@Mast Probably still worth it. Not sure how the process works over there but even as an adult it's worth getting into.

Expect your practical knowledge to A) give you a huge boost, and B) tell you the wrong ways to do things frequently.
But seriously, you should be able to get into the field without the BS.
(Pun intentional.)

@202_accepted Basically, you can enroll as a part-timer and do it on the side. So you go from a 40-hour to a 60-hour week and take 3-4 years to finish it up.
@Hosch250 lol

5:01 PM
@Mast It usually takes 3-4 years here in general.

@skiwi Can I haz Dutch opinion?
@202_accepted Yea, but as part-timer you skip a couple of BS classes enforced on the usual students by testing through them.

@Mast He'll probably tell you to drink some booze and do it on Dutch courage :P

Ah, here a 20-hour University load is wayyyy high. Usually you're in the 12-18 range.

This might be more appropriate for codereview.stackexchange.comStriplingWarrior 25 secs ago

@202_accepted Perhaps I was a bit high, 15 could well be it.

possible answer invalidation by pushkin on question by pushkin: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/192507/revisions

@Mast Get a degree in thermo-engineering. ;)
Then go work for Boeing and build airplanes and jets and crap.

@202_accepted lol

And then sneak me one so that I can have an AH-64D.

@202_accepted Lockheed-Martin.

5:06 PM
I wanted to be a nuclear fusion engineer a long, long time ago. Hence the nickname.

@Mast Not too late!

lol
No, way too theoretical for my taste.

@Mast Was about to say "you're not dead yet".

@Mast Just be a mad nuclear fusion engineer.

@Zeta Mad angry or mad insane?

5:08 PM
@Zeta My backyard is big enough, though I'd never get zoning permission or the funding.

Actually you could be both.

@Mast I'll bankroll you!

Chaotic evil.

How does $10/week sound?
Because that's my budget.

If you're looking for better advice I think this question is well suited for code review stack exchange and post everything you have. — Sam Marion 31 secs ago
@StriplingWarrior it was off topic for codereview since I am posting hypothetical code in a proposal of improving my code — Mike A 28 secs ago

5:09 PM
Oof, lunchtime.

@Mast You're just one Patreon/Liberapay account away from the latter.

@202_accepted Think Red Alert 2: "Insufficient funds"

@Zeta They should totally run that as an ad.
@Mast If you want to be a nuclear engineer, come over here. I hear they are preparing to build a couple new plants.

@Mast what do you do now?

@Hosch250 I heard the opposite, two by me are closing

5:14 PM
Hmm.

Just got my first [Badge:Booster] on a 4 year old question.

Q: Squire for your recursive ssh adventures

sineemoreOne day I used to ssh to lot's of machines to do some administrative tasks. I constantly used l to list directories just like I do on my own machines. Guess what, that doen't work. There were no any usable aliases! So I opened a code editor... xssh This script will connect to remote host via ss...

@Hosch250 The problem right now is that coal and natural gas power are way cheaper to generate.

@Mast On what?

25 mins ago, by Mast
On a side note, I'm considering getting a CS bachelor's degree on the side. Would it be worth anything considering I come from a non-CS field and much older than the average student?
On that ^^.

@Hosch250 Probably fission plants. I'm talking fusion.

@Mast Yeah.

@bruglesco I'm somewhat of an electromechanical all-rounder.
The Next Big Thing in fusion is ITER.
They do some weird things nowadays.

@Mast What about this one at IPP?

5:28 PM
@Zeta I didn't study that high.
If I change venue, software is the logical choice.

5:41 PM
@Mast I thought Fusion power was too expensive or something

@Malachi Everything new is expensive. Everything complicated is expensive. Fusion is new and complicated.
Although fusion bombs are quite old, but you normally don't want to blow up the reactor.

@Malachi It doesn't provide more energy than it releases yet.

^^
ITER should be the first one releasing more than it takes.

In fusion bombs, part of it is fusion and part is fission.

@Mast they have been talking Fusion for over 15 years, but yeah, what @Hosch250 said

5:43 PM
10:1 or so, it's a start.
@Malachi I've known about it for 15 years, so they've been talking about it way longer.

yeah something about them not being able to chain it.
that is why Fission works so well

Fission wants to get out of hand.

in the bombs they do fission to start the fusion
the only way to build up enough energy to start the fusion in a small device

Fusion meanwhile wants to stop. You have to keep providing input.

Not the only way, but definitely one of the easier ways.

5:45 PM
But if the fusion releases more than it takes, we could put some of that energy back in.

@Hosch250 Yup. Which is kind of what you want in a reactor. Less likely to go boom.

Yep.
OK, time for the big merge.

@Hosch250 crosses fingers

3 conflicts.
All in .csproj files.
