@ybungalobill : Using memset instead of initialization wouldn't pass code review anywhere I've ever worked, and that has certainly involved plenty of "low-level" code. I'm not obliged to give explanations in comments or to explain comments, nor am I selling anything (i.e. I've no investment here). You sound as convinced as I and there's certainly no point in arguing here of all places. — ildjarn 46 secs ago

Q: Game map transitions edge cases

justthom8I am working on a simple 2-D game right now in Python. I was wondering if there was a better way than the below to write the game logic to check if the camera is near the edge of the player view, or near the map edge. The logic is getting pretty big, and it's making it much harder to check fringe...

@JamesWald I agree, and the comment that "for the 1% of your time you spend on code reviews, you have to spend the other 99% with hard to read code" strikes me as silly or maybe whiney. The code review is critically important time where clarity is paramount. All the arguments I'm hearing against the prefix are purely aesthetic preference, and that's an extremely weak premise. I don't buy it. Show me a real reason. — Craig 41 secs ago

2:43 AM
Excellent point regarding diff tools, which is in addition to the issues around using printouts for code reviews. I'm only seeing arguments against using prefixes based on personal aesthetic preference, and with due respect, who cares what the coding guidelines document from Microsoft says? I've seen plenty of examples of Microsoft code with prefixes, and I don't see any functional benefit derived from excluding them. — Craig 35 secs ago

A projector for a code review? Handy, on the one hand, but on the other hand, kind of hard for attendees to make notes in the margins of the code like they can if they're looking at a printout. — Craig 44 secs ago

Lots of quotes missing, bad choice of variable types (you're using string where you should use arrays), useless uses of subshells, echo and awk, etc. Too many wrong conceptions to fit in this comment; that would be more appropriate for a code review site. In fact, what you're trying to achieve with this code is not even clear to me. Can you describe your task and not the problem you're encountering when you're trying to achieve your task using what you think is appropriate? we're clearly having an XY problem. — gniourf_gniourf 7 secs ago

Q: Do I edit my question based on answers?

Ng Oon-EeA very simple question, but I haven't seen whether this is acceptable behaviour here. I do see mention of 'iterative' code reviews, which I assume refers to "post, receive answer(s), edit, answers updated" type questions. Apologies if this is already explained somewhere.

@skiwi And just think. Right now, all of that is handled in a single Excel file.

@skiwi It's a holdover from when the company was 3 people sitting around a desk.
At the time, it was a great way to do it, and it managed fine for years.

@syb0rg Thanks. Can you clarify how this invalidates the answer? I think adding the view can only supplement the answer, if Shelby115 were to modify their answer later. The view is integral to the problem and I forgot to put it in the question. — J Hache 4 mins ago
You must not edit the code in the question once it has been answered, as that would violate the question-and-answer nature of this site. @JHache You could finish it first, the iterative review doesn't have a time limit

Yeah I just did that ! It's what I do but with lunch coming up it probably won't be until late afternoon.

@skiwi More like current self :p (I kid, I'm actually a pretty solid developer these days, but that's still a relatively recent development)

@JHache Perfectly fine, theres no rush here haha
Well, unless you're under pressure to finish it fast

@syb0rg hahah it's mostly me. I started this project during my internship. Got hired, so now it's refactor time. Earlier during this first employment week wasn't too productive code-wise, so of course I had to deal with impostor syndrome once more.
nobody in the building is using ASP, seniors on my team were like "good on ya for creating yourself job security so quick"

I should learn myself some ASP, I'm used to old languages...

Oh, the answerer

:-)

Already got 'em

@mast I did what I can for upvotes. Hoping I could get a couple more answers, but if I don't that answer will be accepted tomorrow

On Code Review we don't rush the acceptance of answers.
I usually wait a week.
Sometimes you get your most valuable answer after a couple of days.

2:45 PM
In some cases I've waited a year

I usually wait two or three days, unless there's a bounty on my question

And if the question goes HNQ, wait till it isn't anymore :P

Then I wait till the bounty is up

Yea, same with bounties.

@JHache You don't have enough rep for a bounty, unfortunately

@JHache On the subject of imposter syndrome. Just went and tracked down the Joel Spolsky Quote:
> Sometimes I just can't get anything done.

Sure, I come into the office, putter around, check my email every ten seconds, read the web, even do a few brainless tasks like paying the American Express bill. But getting back into the flow of writing code just doesn't happen.

These bouts of unproductiveness usually last for a day or two. But there have been times in my career as a developer when I went for weeks at a time without being able to get anything done. As they say, I'm not in flow. I'm not in the zone. I'm not anywhere.

Plus you have to wait two days to add one anyways

@Zak Wow, not being anywhere is really deep

@JHache 5 upvotes with that non-click-bait-y title tho is pretty good

@Zak I have a folder on my bookmark bar with plenty of stuff like that
that's a good one

And sticking around this chat room will help boost the votes you get on questions

2:48 PM
Posting more good questions does wonders as well :-)

@syb0rg haha thanks! didn't quite get the same reaction from programmers.se

I wonder if I would have been better off rewriting my code in C#? it looks like the VB.NET tag doesn't have as much activity

I'm pretty sure we're the most welcoming community on the SE network

@jrh If it's a new project, probably. Why stick to an old language if you can write it in something maintainable and more future-proof.

C# is old?

2:50 PM
No, VB.Net.

jrh
well, I mean for the code review, I write mostly VB.NET but I can read both

Oh, I thought I was getting old for a sec

@syb0rg no surprise there. People want to write better code, people are welcome to getting their code analyzed and deconstructed

@jrh Your latest question risks being closed as example code.

there's less pride involved

jrh
hmm, I didn't think of that

@jrh A tag having low activity either means it's too old, too new or has too few users :P

Just post the whole load, we don't scare easily.
Some of our tags should get some more following, would be great for the site.

Do we have a meta that records the largest questions on CR?

I don't need a meta to know it's one of @Zak's.

Q: How can I reduce cascading if statements C

RoadRunnerSo I have this code, which reads in a string password from the user and checks if it has a dollar sign $, a number, and an upper case letter. If It has all three, then it prints Your password is correct. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <ctype.h> #define MAXSI...

Zak
@Mast Yep. Without me we'd still be on the old 30k character limit ^^
Well, probably somebody else would've done the same thing eventually.

2:55 PM
@jrh Or, you know, fix the code, because I'm not too convinced it isn't a minimized example.

Monking =)
How does one post tags in chat?

Better questions get more upvotes and usually better reviews.

Are you absolutely sure this works as intended? What happens when you pick $01 as password? — Mast 1 min ago

@Mast The order of the characters input doesn't matter
I think that's the intended behavior

2:58 PM
I think it still outputs a sum of 3 while not having an uppercase character.
Which is quite a severe bug if you ask me.

jrh
@Mast ok, can't do it right now though, would it be better to delete then repost?

@Mast Oh, yeah he is looking for all 3 to be present
I really should read questions better before I review them...
I guess I was too jumpy cause it was

@jrh Perhaps I'm being too strict though, second opinion on this?

jrh
I'm happy to post the full code later this afternoon if it would help

I think it definitely will.

@jrh If the actual code is in multiple files, split your question up in codeblocks, like here. If the code requires external dependencies that aren't yours but they are publicly available, you don't have to include those. Just make sure we can see they're being used. So don't snip away your list of includes/usings.
@syb0rg Yea, I like quoting the rules of security as well. Thanks to Information Security for having them on their meta :-)

@Mast when I click that link I get a security error weirdly enough

@syb0rg Is that score card something you'll do more often?

@Mast I think so, but I need to standardize it better
As in, give the ratings actual qualities so they aren't as arbitrary

@JHache Do you have a non-standard browser?

Chrome

@Mast Do you like it or nah?

@syb0rg Yea, I do.
@JHache How about this:

I'm thinking of making a meta-post, let others have input into it all

Once you've tried a couple of things, sure, make it a meta.
Seems a bit early though.
But looks promising, it's a good idea.

Anyone know if it's possible to setup a local system to act as a Windows Update Server for Windows 10, so I can DL updates for all my PC's to one server, and have it apply the updates to each PC?

Thanks for the advice and criticism, you must be a C god my man. Yeah I know I've missed a lot of stuff. But I will keep that in mind when I work on it again.
