Q: An utility Java class method for nifty and informative conversion of a double matrix into a string

coderoddeI have coded this static method for converting a double matrix into a nifty String. It considers the width of the matrix to be equal to the length of the longest row. Now, if some matrix entries are considered missing, strings of the format x.xx.. are added instead of them to the overall string....

@Vogel612 (10^6)^(10^6)

@N3buchadnezzar Don't know if it increases speed, but use sum(...) where ... is a comprehension.

10:00 AM
@Vogel612 you're missing the pow call

hmm... overflow

@JoeWallis Also xrange, I always forgets..

@N3buchadnezzar Use Python3 already!
4

 " print sum(pow(i, i, 10**10) for i in xrange(1, 10**2 + 1))%10**10 "
Not really sure that is more readable :p

@N3buchadnezzar I'd keep d, but may be faster. And is as readable if you keep d.
Also you can use `` to change to fixed font. `print "a"` == print "a"

10:05 AM
Is the summation of power factors something that's calculatable without iterations?
I know that triangular numbers can be done via (N*N)/2 + (N/2)
instead of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... + 99 + 100

@Pimgd You can do that, I forgot, even though I was looking at that yesterday! n(n + 1)/2 is nicer IMO.

sorry I can't read that
okay I can but you can't execute it
so it is non-obvious to other programmers

Cause I didn't put a *? n * (n + 1) / 2

Sadly there does not exist a nice formula for the sum of i^i
Also i^i grows really fast

@JoeWallis (n + 1) * n / 2 fixes order of operations to left to right as well

10:13 AM

@Pimgd n * ((n + 1) / 2) == (n* (n + 1)) / 2.

@Quill ?

that's i^i on a graph

@JoeWallis I don't really care about the mathematical notation, I care more for getting the idea across as clearly as possible to an audience as dim as possible
hence the spacing and parentheses in (N*N)/2 + (N/2)

I heard that N*N was preffered over N**2 for large values?

10:23 AM
Same thing.

sure hope it is same thing
I suppose one could translate to a pow op code and the other to a mult op code

10:40 AM
So quick question:
I've been playing around with code involved in an answer I wrote yesterday and it's gotten completely out of hand.

@JoeWallis But I like Python 2.7 :P

Does that sound like something that could be made into a question?

@overactor
It's for 'I started answering this question but I ended up with an alternative implementation instead'.

Is it okay if it's closer to ?

@Pimgd meh. Carry on and remove that remark :)

10:43 AM
it's already been rolled back

I mean the original code (on CR btw) was pretty good. My answer to the question, I think, provided some nice improvements.
I now have an interesting approach, but I have no idea if it'd be considered a mess or not
That's a cool tag by the way

In that case I'm not sure you should add the tag, but you can definitely post the question.

n*n is several times faster than n**2 on small and medium-sized numbers, but for large numbers they are much the same

Is more for: "I took this crappy piece of code and made it awesome!"?

10:46 AM
Oh, I missed the meta post

timeit('n*n', 'n=10**6') / timeit('n**2', 'n=10**6') → 0.14
timeit('n*n', 'n=10**500') / timeit('n**2', 'n=10**500') → 0.86

wow :p

0.86 is ... way faster
why do they add up to 1
coincidence?

Yes, just coincidence

@Pimgd Inside job. Illuminati confirmed.

10:50 AM
timeit('n*n', 'n=10**1000') / timeit('n**2', 'n=10**1000') → 1.04

Oh Belgium... this is why we joke about you: One of their ISPs in Brussels offers fiber to customers (some say it's 220/20 Mbps others say it's 1/1 Gbps line - not sure) but they limit the data usage to 500 GB per month, but you can increase this by ordering packs of 20 GB on the providers website which cost 0 euro each

welp, just go to our website
okay, I'll do just that... website-of-isp.com...

@skiwi I can (kinda) see the logic, but damn that's going to cause so many irritated customers, for no good reason.

OTOH 500 GB...? That's quite a bit

Zak
@Pimgd Hadn't even realised that aspect of it ^^

@Zak Belgium citizen are used to quite some stuff...

@Pimgd meh. that's about mediocre for a small company
and 500GB in a month is definitely doable

Zak
11:49 AM
Plus, your limit is 500GB, but you have to refill every 20GB thereafter?

Well, isn't that the damn thing you're paying for?

Zak
@skiwi Yes, painfully aware

And it's reset at the end of the month ;-)

@Quill Why's Dictionary listed as a framework for Python? It's a datatype.

idk, I thought it was tags

Oh, that could be.
Probably my bad then.

Someone thinks he can just edit my code there?
To be fair it was the answerer, but it still doesn't make sense

You might want to post this over at codereview. Apart from removing the outer loop I would suggest renaming your variables Word and Words to avoid confusing them with... Word and .Wordsarcadeprecinct 18 secs ago

makes it easier to read
not unheard of

It definitely makes it easier to read
copy paste to editor, auto format, paste back in question

the comma separated parameters one seems valid but the others seem a little unnecessary

I guess I forgot I'm not on CR, but I still don't like it
Probably because last times people started editing stuff they changed variable names too
And sometimes function/method names

1:09 PM
anyway, your right to reject

,} makes me stab people, though

@Pimgd It's pretty normal in the Rust docs too, but I'm unsure of it still

staaaaaaab

@skiwi It was easier to read. Don't let pride blind you to beneficial advice.
Like, I get that the // .... comment is present to imply there's more that follows, but you preface to say it's an excerpt, so it's redundant. Not really like he changed your code, just a bit of formatting.

on SO it's not really your code anymore

1:22 PM
@syb0rg Thanks, am still trying to get my head around the chat

On second thought he may have made some improvements, but he also made some things worse by adding commas :/

@Quill Nice link, do you play? I actually learned a bunch of his pieces on the Piano.

huh? wrong person, maybe?

Yes.
Sorry, lol.
Your image is also good. I opened two links at the same time and mistook yours.

@BHARATHI there are SO~ many code review tools nowadays with different flavors and approaches that I can't advise any in particular. — bahrep 44 secs ago

@Zak star me and be done with it!

it'll be a load off your mind

@arcadeprecinct The code must be written or maintained by the author for the question to be on-topic for Code Review. Code that you found online is not eligible. — 200_success 21 secs ago

@Zak Here, have a star.
#payitforward

@syb0rg Not yet, still thinking about it

@syb0rg Did you take it?
There's a lot of courses around, but it's tricky finding the good ones.

1:41 PM
@Mast I'm taking it right now
About to finish up the first lesson of 9

I am not looking for code review. I am saying above code did not work. so i am looking for solution to my question. — Montallis 56 secs ago

Q: Migrate files from MySQL BLOBs to PostgreSQL largeobjects

leseAs title says, this piece of code migrates files (binary and metadata) from a database to another one with different structure. Currently my problem is that when I have to deal with a big database (about 30GB) , at a certain point the script slow down very much. Currently (Jun10 15.30) is still...

@syb0rg Let me know when you've finished the first 3 :-)

@Mast Why 3?

1:49 PM
> removed unnecessary text (edit approved)
guess it was not unnecessary

@Pimgd Oh, those were all supposed to be separate code statements? that changes the question almost entirely.
