Q: Linked List in the form a a stack

FroodyFrogI created a stack using a linked list, and while most of the code works correctly, I am having issues with the pop method. The program pushes in numbers correctly, and while it can pop values if they are in the stack, I can't figure out how why the return statement isn't working. #include<iostream

1:30 AM
any regex pros in here?
I need a regex which will capture... something along the lines of...

please don't say html

something which starts with class (followed by a space), some characters (and possibly a colon, and 0 or more commas) and then followed by an opening brace
Then... I need to capture everything from class to the matching closing brace...
(keeping in mind that there may be nested opening and closing braces in there)

this belongs on codereview, not here — Dagon 39 secs ago

and from that, I need 3 bits of information...

1. I need the *whole* string
2. I need the single word that comes between `class` and either the `:`, or if no colon, everything between `class` and the opening `{`
3. I need to know whether, within the braces, the following regex is found...
"@IBOutlet.*var\\s*(.*)\\s*:.*!"
And no... it's not HTML I'm trying to parse.

@nhgrif C# class declaration?

1:36 AM
do you have a sample string?

well now you can be new on codereview :-) — Dagon 25 secs ago

    class Sample: Foo, Bar {

        @IBOutlet weak var one: UIView!

        func viewDidLoad() {
             super.viewDidLoad()
             // trying to write a code generator
        }
    }
so from that, I need to capture that group... but there may be multiple of those groups in a single file, or other lines in the file which aren't part of the class definition, etc.
I also need to extra the word "Sample" out of that group
And I need to know whether or not that @IBOutlet keyword exists.

@nhgrif Does Swift have a way to use class as a variable name?
In C#, you can use it like var @class = something;.

uh

If so, you'll need to check for that edge case.

1:40 AM
you could probably do
var myClass = something
I can worry about edge cases later.

I meant, just class itself.
@nhgrif Not if you are working on that Lockheed team.

I'm working on a proof of concept.

I get that error in C# too. But, I can use @class instead.
OK, cool.
I don't know regex, so I'll step out of everyone's way.

I can use an underscore

Scratch that. It apparently can always be used at the beginning.

This question has been cross-posted and closed as off-topic on Code Review because it asks for help to implement a feature and also happens to contain a syntax error. That said, I don't think it makes a good Stack Overflow question either, as it's asking more to have code written for the poster than to help the poster understand how to fix a specific problem. — 200_success 1 min ago

Boils down to "do not use enums, a class takes about 500 bytes RAM, instances take 12-16 bytes, and if you put them in a hashmap its another 32 bytes per entry"
...
> A few bytes here and there quickly add up—app designs that are class- or object-heavy will suffer from this overhead. That can leave you in the difficult position of looking at a heap analysis and realizing your problem is a lot of small objects using up your RAM.
On one hand, I get it, OTOH, if you've got SHARED enums (used across many classes) then you're going to need a container of sorts anyway. If you need the features that enums give you then there's no way around it and deciding to not do it based on a single KB of ram seems... silly to me
<android-bashing>besides, android's UI requires so many listeners and runnables that you're burning a lot of bytes for anonymous classes there</android-bashing>

Regarding the electrical engineering story of yesterday
I asked my brother
they were attempting magnetic propulsion
if you create an electrical circuit then it gives off a magnetic field and you can use this with magnets to push something forward
small scale this is apparently peanuts
A magnetohydrodynamic drive or MHD propulsor is a method for propelling vessels using only electric and magnetic fields with no moving parts, using magnetohydrodynamics. The working principle involves electrification of the propellant (gas or water) which can then be directed by a magnetic field, pushing the vehicle in the opposite direction. Although some working prototypes exist, MHD drives remain impractical. == Principle == === Ship propulsion === An electric current is passed through seawater in the presence of an intense magnetic field, which interacts with the magnetic field of the current...
which sounds very cool
The whole point of MHD propulsion was because it was a multi-group effort - my brother is responsible for the sensitive communications part, and some other group (the group of morons making chlorine gas) wanted to use this MHD propulsion because it'd be a lot more silent than a propellor

@Pimgd Why did you leave this closed?

It's programmers.stackexchange.com if you are looking for how to apply design patterns. But for a question like this, where you are asking for "Is this bad code", it's a useless question! If we tell you "no", will you say "oh, okay then!" and leave it as it is? If we tell you "yes", now what? Present the code as is used in its real environment and then we can say "looks good" or "this could be done better by doing x". That there is useful advice. — Pimgd 7 mins ago
specifically,
> But for a question like this, where you are asking for "Is this bad code", it's a useless question! If we tell you "no", will you say "oh, okay then!" and leave it as it is? that part.

> RecursiveByteAccumulator
@Pimgd It's no longer hypothetical.

Because promise1 and promise2 were renamed to accounts and transactions?

And the syntax error got fixed.

12:01 PM
The asker is not looking for a code review in the regular sense, they're looking for confirmation that the code is bad

It looks like someone MCVE'd the crap out of their code to boil it down to a design pattern.

@Pimgd Hmmm, true.
The essence of the question isn't a request for review.

This I ascertained after careful rereading, whereas previously I saw [(promise1, promise2]) and went lolno

I read it as 'how can I fix this crap', but it's 'why was this crap written'.

And with language like this...
> The rationale given was that this way the Promise.all doesn't choke.
I'd put $100 on this is a coworker's code and he's trying to win an argument.
3

12:04 PM
Seconding, @nhgrif

I'll also put $100 on "trying to win an argument", but not on a coworker's code

Ultimately the question is "is this code conducive to a code review?" and my answer is "no"

hate to lose money over pedantry

> The rationale given was that this way the Promise.all doesn't choke. Of course another question entirely is why is this piece of code using Promise.all in the first place? That I don't know, legacy code.
> The rationale given was that this way the Promise.all doesn't choke. Of course another question entirely is why is this piece of code using Promise.all in the first place? That I don't know, legacy code.

maybe the person who wrote it doesn't work there anymore
also what the hell deja-vu
in the literal sense

12:08 PM
Right, so he can be the maintainer, and that's fair enough. But he's not posting code for review.
He's posting code to get Internet proof that he's correct in thinking this is bad code.
Either to settle an argument at work or reassure himself.

Internet proof sounds so shaky

His argument is based on a weird presumption anyway.
he's confused that Promise.all doesn't immediately die if an error is encountred in either promise

@DanPantry Is it, or is it a language barrier?

And that's because Promise.all waits for the results of all passed in promises before reporting anything (that way you can figure out if N many promises failed).
In his first example, either promise can "fail-fast", but it means that you have to implement some tricky logic in order to make sure tehy are BOTH completed before succeeding
Actually, I'm wrong, Promise.all does fail-fast.
It's Promise.settled that doesn't

So he doesn't even know how the code works?

12:15 PM
Well, it works as he expects if he adds a .catch to Promise.all
> const willReject = Promise.reject({ error: 'oops!' })
undefined
> const willResolve = Promise.resolve(5)
undefined
> Promise.all([willReject, willResolve]).catch(err => console.log(err))
Promise { <pending> }
> { error: 'oops!' }
PEBCAK.

@DanPantry "amazed" is the wrong response.
You should be furious.

@nhgrif lol
I don't have the leverage to be furious, unfortunately

I don't do progress commits anymore
svn has beaten it out of me
it will take several weeks of git use to get it back in I think

feature branch -> commit -> regularly fetch/rebase -> git merge --ff-only when done
and git tag when you merge back in with appropriate semver increment
it's not hard
rebasing can get hairy on long lived feature branches, but that's why you do it often

12:44 PM
... svn
no branches

SVN does have branches I thought?
just really crap ones
oh, damn

too much work, so there's "dev" and "master"

it does have branches but their version history isnt' distinct from the trunk
then again, that's exactly how tfs branches work

you wanna commit you play conflict bonanza
where you comm- failed, update, test, comm- failed, update, test, commit successful

This is the exact problem with DCVS, rebase is basically impossible cus it destroys history and no rebase = lovely merge conflicts

12:45 PM
although more often, it's update and commit
and then somewhere down the line stuff breaks

I'm looking forward to my flight to Nurnberg in a few weeks
will give me an excuse to finally sit down and read Clean Code

so why do people use svn?

As storage.

because codebase of 2004 or maybe earlier I dunno

Last place where we used SVN had everything there, everything was in SVN. Firmware, software, tests, documentation, etc.

Also [citation needed] I feel a lot of enterprises think that using a DCVS like Git is too "risky" because developers can just walk off with the code (even though it's perfectly possible to do so with a CCVS)

@nhgrif Purge it.

Git (/ɡɪt/) is a widely used source code management system for software development. It is a distributed revision control system with an emphasis on speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. Git was initially designed and developed in 2005 by Linux kernel developers (including Linus Torvalds) for Linux kernel development. As with most other distributed version control systems, and unlike most client–server systems, every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full version-tracking capabilities, independent of network access or...

@DanPantry And now all is FUBAR?

No, it just immediately balked
Oh, no, actually. I may have a problem
Nope, but something weird has happened
I, somehow, have an empty commit

you need a new pre commit hook
that check if there are any changes

uh, no, that's the thing

if there are no changes

1:03 PM
I did commit this correctly because I've been testing this for the past day

then it says no

but one of my commits has gone poof

suspicious...

maybe you accidentally burnt it down?

1:06 PM
Did you rub it too much, and the change come off?

i reckon my rebase from upstream burned it
Still it was a simple one, I'll just haev to be more careful

Q: Reading in data from a file and then assigning vals and then creating object

BlarsssssSo I have some code which I created from the top of my head. But in all honesty I know it can't be the most efficient way of doing it. I have some data in a file all positioned 5 values per line seperated by commas ( one line will be a specific object ) dependent on the name of the item. I know...

Q: Parsing .PLY file using F#

zniwallaI'm fairly new to F# and have written a program to parse PLY files - this is however done in an imperative way with mutable values and as far as I know that should be avoided in functional languages. The program works, but how is the performance? How is the coding style? Cheers! module PLYparsin...

anyone have a good template to start from for a github index.html? I want somewhere where people can play the little games I create for learning purposes

I assume you want something 3 tiles wide, scrolling down for as much as you got?
@Malachi Here?

@Mast I think that github will auto generate some pages as well.
@Mast I like that design though.

Ah, I found out why.. it appears that my colleague's changes overwrote mine.. oh dear.. that's why my commits went poof

On Conflict Revert Coworker.Work

that's the thing there weren't any merge conflicts
When I did a rebase it just reverted my changes, which makes me think he must have made changes without checking in and TFS screwed up or something

On Commit Revert Coworker.Work?

@Malachi It's a good format for a general portfolio page, mobile-ready.
Just take the parts you like.

I am going to implement some Angular I think so I can get a good handle on using it.

Q: Remove unnecessary steps from matrix algebra in R?

IgnacioI have the following data that I want to use to do some matrix algebra: sdY <- 142 sdX <- structure( list( acs_k3 = 1.37382195011817, acs_46 = 3.84979498365555, full = 14.8923887373876, enroll = 226.473191987356 ), class = "data.frame", row.names = c(NA,...

@CaptainObvious dem numbers
@CaptainObvious answered, but probably controversial (suggesting you use c functions [like sscanf] in C++)

@CaptainObvious There's probably a better way, but I can't review R.

@Phrancis someone beat me to it

A: Top 10 editors partitioned by year

dnoethThis can be simplified down to a single query :-) You calculate COUNTs using different WHERE-conditions and aggregation levels, but the base tables are always the same: CountByYear: Edits per user & year TotalCount: All actions of a user CountAllEdits: All Edits of all users (including UserId ...

^^ key words: windowed aggregate functions :)

@Malachi Just use React and save yourself the trouble trust me
BTW, has anyone else had this sort of issue with TFS:
I committed a changeset, then my colleague commited a changeset (no merge conflicts)
When I pulled the branch down again, the original changeset I made had gone poof
But when I tried to check in the fixed file (which WAS different to the one on TFS), TFS was telling me that there were no changes to make
I'm pretty sure the issue is "You're using TFS"
