Relying on a side-effect of an unnecessary piece of code is not an acceptable way to detect anything, let alone end of stream. If you are sure that your code works, but you are looking for improvements you should consider moving your question from Stack Overflow to codereview.stackexchange.com. And by moving I mean delete it from here and post it on that other site. — Pshemo 23 secs ago

I can't figure out why this won't work now....

Which or what this?

give me a second, I am committing it to my repo
it's angular
I am working on branch lyle1

12:49 AM
what's wrong?

I don't know.
lol
when I run the page it won't put the full name together

does it put any of the name together?

no it shows {{student.fullname}}
I wonder if I need the spaces like {{ student.fullname() }}

maybe

nope
didn't make a difference

12:54 AM
Haven't you written {{student.fullName()}}?
Is that a variable or a function call? Or isn't it this one which fails?

it's a function call
it should work like that.

And it's written with capital N?

does the first and last name actually come up for you
I've cloned your repo, and it doesn't come up for me

I will screenshot it for you....
the bottom of this page has the example
that is what I get

12:59 AM
same

I wonder what I am doing wrong

@Malachi Sexy.

lol
the tutorial has the code in the HTML, but I wanted to do it in a separate js file
that is the only thing I have done differently so far

Meanwhile I'm struggling to get memory allocation/deallocation right.

what language?

1:01 AM
What do you think? :p

C?
lol maybe C++
I have double quotes instead of single quotes

C++

single quotes still didn't make a difference

I hardly ever have to manually manage memory but... well, I have pretty strict requirements here.

@holroy in a different branch

1:05 AM
@Malachi Looking over this now, but BTW I think you could use this instead of creating studenObject

I had to get rid of the first ng-app block
also you shouldn't be directly accessing properties on $scope, you should use a $scope.model to store your models

@SirPython I am not writing this from scratch, I am trying to follow a tutorial, could you elaborate a little for me? I think I know what you mean with this
@Quill I did that too and it still isn't working
@SirPython like this
> return this.firstName + " " + this.lastName;

no, not like that
in js
@Malachi Using this means you can't access the parent scope and the other parts of angular

fullName: function() {
return this.firstName + " " + this.lastName;
}
@Malachi ^^

@SirPython that is what I was thinking

1:10 AM
Did you copy that part from the tutorial?

@Quill this might be slightly over my head

$scope.student = {
	firstName: "Mahesh",
	lastName: "Parashar",
	fullName: function() {
		return this.firstName + " " + this.lastName;
	}
}

That's pretty odd that a JavaScript/AngularJS tutorial would write something like that.
1. There's not point in declaring the variable first `var studenObject;`
2. It's a lot simpler to use `this`.

In that block, @Malachi, you're only accessing the object's values, meaning you can't accidentally fuck with something outside of the scope you're in, which is what a lot of people do by accessing $scope directly

Q: ATM in Netbeans

WilhelmSo this is my first project in Java, and I'm a bit lost here. Hope you guys can give me some hints or shed some light on this, please. I'm trying to make the user enter a PIN to access the ATM, but I need that pin to be no longer than 4 digits. I tried using this: int amount, balance, pin...

Someone emailed me this puzzle:
> I flew directly from Minneapolis to Las Vegas on Saturday, stayed for 3 days, and then flew directly back to Minneapolis on Saturday.
How is that possible?
I get that it is about time zones, but I don't get the rest.

If you use enough time travelling you'll get back on the next Saturday?
You could go the long way around, that is going east from Minneapolis?

flew the long way directly?

It would still count as going directly, for a slightly warped definition of directly.
Another option could be to fly by hot air balloon, which also would take some time... :-)
By the way, it's in the middle of the night here in Norway, so my suggestion may not be the best! :-D

lol
@Quill I did those things as well
how do I pull down to my machine from remote (using command line)?

1:41 AM
git pull

git pull origin lyle1?

something like that
get github desktop client
it's great

I was told to learn the command line so I am trying to do everything I can from the command line

@DanPantry I have a question regarding promises and websockets whenever you're available

@Quill it still won't work for me, and I just pulled all your

1:47 AM
are you in the right branch?

yeah I merged yours with lyle1 and then I pulled that down on my machine
I tried it first in Edge and then in chrome
I am still getting the same results I did before

@Hosch250 Another option could be that you are flying from Las Vegas in Uruguay to Minneapolis, MN in the US. That would also take some extra time...

Maybe the plane's name was Saturday :P
2

there was an old cowboy riddle like that
a man rode into town on Sunday stayed 3 days and left on Sunday. because the horse's name was Sunday

@Hosch250 Or maybe it was a 4 day flight.

1:53 AM
is there something that I need to set for angular to work on my browser??

Wouldn't the correct phrasing be "flew to Minneapolis in Saturday", if the plane was named "Saturday"?

you fly on a plane

@holroy they're both acceptable

In is technically more correct, but on is usually used.

but literally you are inside the plane. planes weren't always enclosed

1:54 AM
I still like the option of a longer flight time as the best solution to the riddle...

@Malachi I recommend checking the console when you see the error. Angular's errors are very good in that they provide links to the documentation for how to fix them.

@SirPython I was just about to run it again and do that.. thank you
is 1.3.14 before or after 1.3.9?

...9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. I'd say after ;-)

lol

trying to make sure that I have the latest version here. but @Quill didn't have to change the version...

2:00 AM
I didn't?

did you have to change the hosted library?
for AngularJS to get the code to work

no, I had to change the file location of the js file
but not the version

yeah I had to take the "~/" off that src attribute
but then I get another error

What error?
works for me

angular.js:38Uncaught Error: [$injector:modulerr] http://errors.angularjs.org/1.4.9/$injector/modulerr?p0=mainApp&p1=Error%3A…ogle‌apis.com%2Fajax%2Flibs%2Fangularjs%2F1.4.9%2Fangular.min.js%3A19%3A463)
it's an error in the Angular.js file line 38. error handling or something

2:09 AM
can you paste that as a code block

Uncaught Error: [$injector:modulerr] errors.angularjs.org/1.4.9$injector/modulerr?p0=mainApp&p1=Error%3A…ogleapis.com%2Fajax%2Flibs%2Fangularjs%2F1.4.9%2Fangular.min.js%3A19%3A463)
lol
doesn't say much...

@MarcHalikas - Moderators don't concern themselves with advising newbies. If you hang around here you will realize that StackOverflow is largely self-moderated by voting, vote-to-close, and by ordinary users telling newbies when they have done something inappropriate. Anyway, the chances are that nobody will take time to give you a decent response for a code review here. You would do better deleting it >>yourself<< and posting it on the code-review site yourself. — Stephen C 29 secs ago

awesome. basically using websockets in promises never resolves, so I have to start the prompt before the connection, meaning the formatting is messed up

okay
I guess the promise is meant to determine when the ws is connected?

normally it'd be like setting an event listener
but the outer promise never finishes

ya do realise that you never actually wait for the promise to resolve here, right?

12:32 PM
jesus christ dude those monster commits
lol
So what was the issue with that version?

It didn't work

excellent

Originally it was set to open the prompt once it had resolved, but it never resolved

So.. that means that the promise never resolves
you dingus

Yeah, that's what I said

12:35 PM
Right okay so
what revision am I looking at that i have to fix
the latest version? or an old version

How do I get it to resolve
The latest version

bluebird.promisify is not magic
it requires a function signature of
function(...args: any[], cb: nodeCallback) {}
where
type nodeCallback = <T>(value: T, error: Error) => any
the call you're promisifying doesn't take a callback, so it never resolves

Q: Nice GUI for the sudoku solver in Java

coderoddeI have implemented a GUI for my sudoku solver: You can use mouse for operating it, yet I have coded moving the cell cursor with keys wW/aA/sS/dD. My code follows: SudokuGrid.java: package net.coderodde.sudoku; import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Color; import java.awt.Dimension; ...

Isnt the .then the callback?

12:37 PM
...oh boy
hold on let me clean my desk and I'll explain

Sure, thanks

okay, that was bugging me
So.
core.start, which is what you have, has the following signature.
function start(): void {}
When you run Bluebird.promisify on something, it assumes that function takes a node-style callback as its last parameter.
Which looks like this:
type NodeStyleCallbackFn = <T>(value: T, error: Error) => any
Thus, the signature of Bluebird.promisify looks a bit like this
type PromisifiableFunction = <T>(args: ...any[], cb: NodeStyleCallbackFn)
function promisify<T>(fn: PromisifiableFunction<T>): (args... any[]) => Promise<T>
So, yes, when you use promisify on core.start, it will return a promise, however...
Bluebird will pass a NodeStyleCallbackFn to the last parameter of the PromisifableFunction passed to promisify
If that callback is invoked with the error parameter being null, or undefined, then the returned promise will be resolved, with the second parameter (the value, or T) as the value passed to then
Otherwise, if error is non-null/undefined, the promise will reject with that error instead.
Now, this is important, because core.start has the signature () => void, it does not take a NodeStyleCallbackFn, and thus the callback is never resolved, and so the promise never resolves.
Sorry, that was a bit long winded, but essentially: You need to either
- take in a call back to `core.start` and invoke it with `(null, valueWhichMightBeNull)` when you've done connecting
- or return a promise from `core.start` and do away with `Bluebird.promisify` entirely
Bluebird.promisify doesn't automatically resolve when the promisifed function completes because it can't always assume that the async action finishes synchronously, so you need to do something with the callback it gives you

Okay, so I pass in the prompt opening function and call it when the connections are complete?

Well, looking at the structure of your code, that won't work because you have no way of knowing when connectToDomainRooms completes.
That's an easy fix though. Let me put up a 'fix' on a gist
not guaranteeing that will work straight out of the bx, but it should put you on the right path

12:59 PM
thanks. The url comes out of a previous promise

All I saw was var url somewhere but I hope that helps
BTW, unless you are using babel and specific transforms
Prefer function foo(){} over var foo = function() {}
function foo() {} retains the functions name in stack traces.
var foo = function() {} will show up as <anonymous> in stack traces
...unless you're using a specific babel plugin, which corrects this behaviour
If you want a temporary function that isn't hoisted, use this instead:

I'm trying to use babel, but the cli keeps giving me issues

const foo = function foo() {}

I'll sort it soon

That retains the function name so it isn't anonymous, but it won't hoist it to the top of the scope (so it can't be used everywhere - one of the main issues with var that let/const solve)
All this node knowledge and I can't find a job in nodejs, RIP
I'm interviewing for a contract position sometime soon, but I doubt I'll get it due to my notice period

1:06 PM

Oh btw that colors package literally builds on string.prototype

When I joined the job I work at I voiced concern about my notice period, but oh well.
I know, I saw that. Not happy about it.

How long is your notice period

2 months
Which is the standard for everyone in our team
It's good if you're underperforming, not so good if you want to switch to contractual work, which is generally "immediate"

wow that sounds fun

@Quill Usually is. The harder to replace you are, the longer your notice period.
Turns out Angular developers are quite rare
@rolfl Nice :D

@rolfl that's interesting. got a particular destination in mind, or just a general time off thing?

Yeah, it's funny that way, I have to give 3 months notice if I want to take more than 1 week of vacation, but if I want to quit, I can give 2 weeks notice.

1:13 PM
I have to give as many weeks as I want off notice plus 1 week
so if I want 1 day off, I need a week's notice

@Quill - we, as a family, are going to Newfoundland for a fortnight.

in my previous place of employ it was 2 weeks notice for ANY days off and 1 week notice period

It's an odd thing, my life in Canada. I have been to the Western-most, northern most, and in August, the Eastern-most places you can drive, in Canada.

If this is working code that you think could be improved, consider Code Review. — jonrsharpe 36 secs ago

Heh, @nhgrif - you must live in a small state, this is how to drive across ontario, a single province: google.ca/maps/dir/Lancaster,+ON/Kenora,+ON/…

All of the United States are small relative to Canadian provinces, except Alaska, and perhaps Texas/California.
Although, it depends on how we're defining "across". Your route gets quite close to Ontario, then just skirts along the border for quite some time.
It obviously would take much longer to drive north-south across California than east-west.
(although, east-west, you'd be dealing with the Rockies)

Yeah, that's true, but it the route is the longest drivable axis of ontario. Bizarrely, the northern most roads in Ontario only go halfway up the province.... so, the route I show is also sort of the shortest axis....
Ontario is longer North/South than East/West. google.ca/maps/dir/Windsor,+ON/Fort+Severn,+ON/…

Yeah, Ontario is much larger than either of those, probably at least twice as "long" and twice as "wide".

1:59 PM
This would be closer to the distance you are driving
Of course, all of Canada is about like Alaska. A lot of territory... and snow... and moose...
Ontario has just slightly more population than Illinois or Pennsylvania.

If you don't know whether it's correct, test it. Once it's working, if you want to know whether it's appropriate, take it to Code Review (using your actual code, not just snippets) — jonrsharpe 12 secs ago

@Malachi Hmm... Didn't check the sender of this message, and thought it was Duga, and was a little impressed that it picked up on "review ... code" statements and not only "code ... review" statements. Then I realized it wasn't Duga... :-)

lol
I don't think it checks CodeReview does it?

Don't think so... That doesn't show before you either click the link, or hover it, either... Which also added to my confusion... Maybe I'm a little tired as well, even without a birthday. (I did however go to bed very late (or early), and just recently got up again)

@Jamal just sniped some close votes from me....lol
@holroy lol
are there any Ruby Reviewers in here right now?
@Jamal I think this one is on-topic --> codereview.stackexchange.com/q/120887/18427
second code block looks like ruby to me, and the rest of it looks like either diagrams of tables or what OP calls cucumber
