I can believe that mods on CR take their job more seriously than most SE mods.
I'm not on other sites a whole lot, but I have a bunch of flags on SO just about to age away.

i think that's an unfair compare @Hosch250

Maybe they need more mods then.

because SO has a whole separate level of volume of flags

Either they should have enough to handle it, or they do, but the mods don't handle it.

take Ask Ubuntu, the flags don't survive more than a few hours with me and the other mods sifting through the queues
SO is a different evil beast

1:46 AM
I suppose.
Maybe the mods will eventually catch up the way they elect three new ones just about every year.

I thought of another idea for a meta question.
First, I need to write another SQL query.
Essentially, the idea is that most off-topic posts are closed exclusively by the mods, which significantly increases their workload. How can the site, as a whole, take more responsibility for off-topic questions to A) reduce the load on the mods, and B) be able to care for itself better without needing such direct oversight by the mods.
If anyone wants to discuss it in chat before I get around to the post, feel free.

@Mast, ummmm... no, I haven't presented a solution, I presented a small section of an implementation in another language, elaborating on the comment by Loki "Not really a circular buffer as there is no back or front concept implemented here." i.e. I have shown how (in theory) a back and front can be implemented. Unfortunately it was a bit long to fit into a comment appending Loki's answer. @skiwi It is. Then again we're not moving everything. And a lot of it is stuff I've spent the lat 2 years normalising and standardising and putting in databases. But still a very compressed timeline.

Btw, I found out yesterday that the company I interviewed for is using a database they've designed themselves, that was a quite interesting find
Let's say they have an unconventional architecture, but that might even make it more interesting as it seems to work ;)

We got support from the Mug and from the monkey, now nuke the crap out if it.

Kaz
@rolfl Does that only work for spam flags?

Is it wrong if a tag is 100% related to itself?

@Mast Starred

@Mast we need a T-Shirt with that on it

@Malachi That's an awesome idea.
@skiwi Wrong? No. Pointless? Definitely.

3:18 PM
@Kaz eh, take it as a little rehearsal, a practice run before the real thing. a warm-up of some sort :)

Kaz
@Mat'sMug I really felt like there was a pun coming there.

I tried, I failed, I crawled back into my hole.

There'll always be more bugs to squash.

gosh
And given xlRepairFile is just an enum member that's essentially a Long integer value worth 1, how would VBA know that the 1 you're passing to the UpdateLinks parameter is meant to be passed to the CorruptLoad parameter 14 commas down the line? There's no magic, VBA can't read your mind there. — Mat's Mug 16 secs ago

@Mat'sMug VBA is clearly not good enough if it cannot read my mind

Kaz
3:24 PM
@skiwi Maybe your mind is not good enough for VBA ^^

If you need a language that will properly do something with your mind, try Brainfuck.
2

lol

@skiwi that's what python is for

^^

nvm

3:25 PM
Python is batteries included, I'm sure there's a mindreader function included somewhere.

Python can only read your mind if you have lots of whitespace between your ears.

lol

@Mast I think I'm under the influence of Brainfuck
lol'd
> If you are new to Torch/Lua/Neural Nets, it might be helpful to know that this code is really just a slightly more fancy version of this 100-line gist that I wrote in Python/numpy. The code in this repo additionally: allows for multiple layers, uses an LSTM instead of a vanilla RNN, has more supporting code for model checkpointing, and is of course much more efficient since it uses mini-batches and can run on a GPU.
"slightly more fancy version"

For some values of slightly.

@skiwi Doesn't look too efficient as well.

If your code works and you don't have problems with it, you should head over to the guys at code review. Stack Overflow is for fixing specific problems. — nvoigt 53 secs ago

@Mast it is usually more like trying to squish a wasp nest, when you squish it more bugs come out

@MathiasEttinger I was just bored ^^

@Malachi That's why you need to burn them down

The obvious solution would've been:
import numpy as np
def median(lst):
    return np.median(np.array(lst))

print(median([4, 4, 5, 5, 2.5]))

Burn it with fire.

3:29 PM
Which, hopefully, would be properly vectorized as well.

@Mast hahaha

Python is like crypto: don't roll your own.
Somebody else has probably done it already, and probably better as well.

I feel like XKCD has been talking directly to me, recently. Two cartoons in particular:

Starting to learn Karate at age 43 .... is an experience.

@Mast this is awesome hahahaha

3:33 PM
LOL

LOL indeed.

Kaz
I would star, but it's that time of day already ^^

@Kaz The time you run out of stars?
You lasted surprisingly long.

@Kaz and all you had to do was to not file a bug report about it :)
5

@Kaz You could have the power of the entire galaxy

Kaz
3:36 PM
@Mat'sMug I'm an engineer. That goes against my religion.
4

I can agree with that

@Kaz Right as I wanted to star that, I'm out of stars

I've used just 2.

@Hosch250 How?

Easy.
Just don't star anything.

Q: Bridge Crossing - Classic Puzzle

borb183Problem - The classic puzzle of finding the minimum amount of time required to cross a bridge given that only two people can cross the bridge at one time. Since they have only one flashlight (it's dark and they need the flashlight), the two people move at the speed of the slower one. Constraints...

@Hosch250 What's the fun in that?

Lots.
I can laugh at you guys when you are complaining about being out.

@Hosch250 And then you star that, right?

Sometimes.

Not the downvoter, but your question sounds better suited for SE Code Review as long you have working code. — πάντα ῥεῖ 27 secs ago

A: How do you get users to think aloud?

Thales PereiraUse a rubber duck. No, seriously! Put a little rubber duck near the user. Tell the user the rubber duck's name - the more non-fitting, the better. Mine is called Frank The Duck. You see, Frank The Duck is a bit dumb. I tell the user that Frank doesn't know how to use the system, and so I need ...

I was going to use that exact same first line when I saw the title.

Q: Django BaseController.

SimonA working example of my try at streamlining my Django views. With absolute inspiration from Laravel. class BaseController(View): template_404 = "404.html" def __call__(self, *args, **kwargs): return self.view(*args, **kwargs) def view(self, request, slug=None): met...

@Mast Awesome name!

@Dex'ter The Median Calculator went HNQ.
Slightly surprised by that.

Probably a long shot... But anyone up for helping with a Hearthstone Simulator? Likely written in Java, not decided yet though

Kaz
92,000 files. Not counting archives. That's the data I've got to aggregate, once I can figure out what on earth is even in there.

3:56 PM
@Kaz Let me guess, the contents are in at least 50 different formats?

Kaz
@Mast Word, Excel, PDF. The occasional email or image.

@Kaz Ctrl+A, Del. Done.
3

^^^ Shift-Del.....

right

Kaz
@Mat'sMug I could just take a hammer to the server. Probably faster.

3:59 PM
rm -rf /

@Kaz Depends on the weight of the hammer.

@Kaz not to mention, more fun too

You might be surprised what little damage a standard 16 ounce hammer can do.

A sledge hammer, now, would be another story.
