Q: Take input from a file/stream and put it into a dynamically allocated array

chadMy code is based upon Harvard's CS50 library but I've made a few improvements. I'm going for something similar to the glibc extension getline() but portable (meaning no ssize_t). @Zak What are you looking for, a scripting language or something heavy-duty?

Zak
@Mast I really don't know :)

@Zak Try a couple: codecademy.com/learn

Zak
I figure, I should get a handle on working with servers. Something for heavy-duty maths/analysis. Something for mobile/internet languages.

12:16 AM
Python, Ruby, JavaScript, they got a couple of interactive tutorials there which are good enough to get a feel for the language.

Zak
but I've no idea what, or in what order, yet :)

heavy-duty maths is done in C++ and Python nowadays
AFAIK
But that's not mobile/internet.
Python can do internet very well, but if you're more in mobile go JavaScript

Zak
it's not so much what I'm into. I'm thinking more about what direction I want to head in

Java is a quite good all-round language.

Zak
the way I see it. I'm great with maths. I enjoy heavy-duty statistics / analytics
And I seem to be a great fit for programming too

12:20 AM
Greetings

Zak
put that together with my current opinion of where certain trends are heading
And it's just about trying to figure out what direction to head in
And what skills would be really useful to have when I get there

Yea, definitely sounds like you should try a couple.
@Zak Well, if you're just looking for something popular, look at the CR tag usage.
Java wins, C# close second.
JavaScript, Python, C++
If you know C++, Python comes easy.
I don't like JavaScript. I'm currently trying C# and I just haven't gotten around Java yet.
@Legato I can still put in tiles on boards already won, is it supposed to do that?

@EthanBierlein you misspelled violating

@EthanBierlein It's migrated.

@Mast You know what that means?
You get two upvotes from me ;-)

Do both up-votes count?

@Quill Oops

@EthanBierlein Fixed it already.
@Quill I lost my SO rep though.

12:45 AM
@SirPython Yeah, there's a bug with the system, where if you upvote a post and it gets migrated, the vote still counts and you can vote again

Has there been a meta on it?

I got +2 on the answer before it was migrated, but my CR rep only shows +20

You probably get double upvotes on CR now.
The SO vote gets carried to CR and here they can vote again. That's no rep on SO and double on CR.

@SirPython I was told by rolfl like three months ago, so I'm assuming the mods (both site and staff) are aware

I love gulp.. I created a workflow that, using a single `gulp` command,
1. Cleans the distribution folder
2. Moves all dev files to the distribution folder
3. Scans my JS files for any style issues
4. Annotates my angular controllers
5. Minifies all images, html, css and javascript
6. Opens my browser at localhost:3000
And adding more tasks to it just so easy
Just two lines of code in ExpressJS's configuration make sure that it only does that when serving data from a release environment -- in development it shows me the unmodified sources

perbertI was about to naïvely propose that they check with linked accounts before casting a vote, and suddenly I got a case of programmitis managerial and foresaw the things that would need to be done for that to happen. Programming is hard, lets go eat waffles instead...

I'll use it if you publish it.

God
Why....?
I don't want to insult, but !?

The question makes sense..

No.
It's a selfish question.
If there's one thing I'm allergic to, it's forcing standards on everyone.

Unless it's security.
Security standards like HTTPS are good.

Just because he used jquery specifically doesn't mean the idea doesn't make sense
And there's nothing forced either
I could see the reasoning behind the browser keeping a list of popular libraries at hand
They'll hardly take a few MB

1:08 AM
I can see the reasoning, but it's a bad idea.
Oh well, even the ignorant deserve an opinion.
It's a political nightmare.

That's a slight overreaction from someone asking why jquery isn't bundled with a browser

Microsoft got in trouble for bundling IE with Windows.
This is even more intrusive.

Oh well, why am I responding anyway? It's not even my fight...

200_successNo, that's unreadable code and therefore not idiomatic. The typical way to generate large numbers is to use multiplication. "Hello, World!" translates to ASCII values < 72, 101, 108, 108, 111, 44, 32, 87, 111, 114, 108, 100, 33 > … which can be thought of as 10 * < 7, 10, 11, 11, 11, 4, 3...

1:43 AM
@Mast No...
Really?

I need to play it some and test this out, if that's the case.
I was worried that there could be something I'd missed.
Or do you mean when you get the "CAN PLAY ANYWHERE" function?
Because if that's the case, then yes.

@Legato In mid, I first completed the 3 x to the left. I was allowed to place the upper right one later.

That looks very neat and tidy :) I will try do as much as I can in this format because I really like it! Now that I think about it I should have submitted this Q to code review instead, argh — Joe 57 secs ago

@Mast After you got the play 'anywhere' function right?

Then the course developer has either limited experience in non-trivial software development or brutally good luck. Recommend picking up a book on C++ and giving it a good read.. There are a number of really stupid mistakes in your code and how it's laid out and a full on code review is out of scope for SO. Another thing that would help is to google "include guard" and implement one. — user4581301 just now

I like that feature since it makes more sense when there are more boards won.
But I could remove it, if it makes less sense.
For the most part, there's no reason you'd want to play in a board that's already won, unless playing in other boards gives someone else access to everything else, too, and you could subvert that by redirecting them somewhere only possible through an already won board.
That's my thinking for the most part.
Once I figured out my network based issues, my only major deal would be to remake this as playable vs opponent on the web.

@Legato So above is totally as expected?

The fact that you can play in won boards, when you can also play anywhere, yes.
I could disable that, but as I explained I think it can make sense, in certain situations. Either way, up to player.

@MaartenBodewes While I agree that this question would be better on Code Review (and I have flagged it asking for migration), your vote to close is a bad close reason as it doesn't say why it is off-topic for SO in the first place. Please read A Guide to Code Review for Stack Overflow usersSimon Forsberg 58 secs ago
@SimonForsberg It's asking how to do a code review / rewrite. I had the strong feeling that if I pointed the site out that that should be enough of an indication. Most of the time people just post here because they don't know about the other sites. — Maarten Bodewes 9 secs ago
@MaartenBodewes I appreciate that, but the CR mods and the SO mods would appreciate it a lot if you slightly changed how you point out the better site to ask on. "voting to close this question because it belongs at site XYZ" doesn't say why the question is off-topic. In this case I'd recommend voting to close as "too broad" (which is an already existing close reason) and leaving a comment recommending Code Review. To avoid further cluttering of comments, if you would like to continue this discussion I invite you to The 2nd MonitorSimon Forsberg 36 secs ago

OK, see you later. I'll try and edit some more reasoning into the close vote next time. Thought it was pretty clear, but that's a matter of view and you are mod at CR, so....

11:09 AM
ah, hi @MaartenBodewes
@MaartenBodewes The problem with "voting to close because it belongs at site XYZ" is that many times a question can be on-topic on both sites. There is quite a bit of overlap between SO and CR, and many times a question is on-topic on both sites.

@janos Well, I was around for a moment there. Not long.

Unfortunately, many times we also get completely inaccurate suggestions to post on CR, and if the close reason then is "voting to close because it belongs at site XYZ" the question ends up getting closed on both sites. One site because it was inaccurately suggested to post on CR, and on CR it gets closed either for being broken code or example code (our most common reasons).

Close because it's off-topic for that site, not because it may or may not be better suited at a different site.
Close first, migrate later.

@CaptainObvious wow:

                elif Schoice == 2:
                    Schoice = 1
                elif Schoice == 3:
                    Schoice = 2

if that crap were zero-based you could modulo it
under the assertion it should even exist..

11:20 AM
@Vogel612 you can still modulo it, you just have to include a bit of more mathematics on it.

true, something like + 2 % 3 with a special case for 0 works

newValue = (oldValue + 1) % 3 + 1
let the maths take care of the "special case for 0"

then again that is even more magic than the crappy elif chain

Maths is not magic!

which probably shouldn't even be there in the first place
sure it isn't, but the abstraction levels are too intermingled if you math it

But in this case, it seemed appropriate.

@Mast doesn't matter what they want I say.

Brainfuck is a name, it is okay to write it without asterisks
also, it is more easily searchable without asterisks

@trichoplax your edit has been rejected, yes. And IMO rightfully so. Censorship is nothing that should happen on the SE network. If you are seriously offended by the name of the programming language, if spelled right, then go complain to the creators instead of throwing a fit and censoring posts on the internet. Thanks — Vogel612 1 min ago

Hiya @Vogel612

@Vogel612 it is not helpful to say someone is "throwing a fit" when they have made no complaint and have calmly explained the reason for needing an exception to normal procedures. I didn't censor the content, only the HNQ visible title. SE has an automated censor filter for HNQ so that individual sites don't need to censor their titles. Since that filter isn't working, I've flagged this for moderator attention so they can make a judgement call. I have no problem with the question or with the programming language name. If you want to discuss anything further in Code Review Chat I'd be happy to. — trichoplax 1 min ago

Thanks :)

To cut to the chase..
I wasn't aware that HNQ has an integrated cussword filter
do you have an MSE post where I can take a look at that?

I don't like titles being censored unnecessarily in general, and I tried to get across that it was an exception rather than a rule

sorry about the "throwing a fit" btw.... I think that came off wrong.

12:45 PM
I've been searching for the MSE post and I can't find it. I saw it recently and they mentioned this programming language in particular - I think it detects distinct words but not compound words
If I can find it I'll link to it

@SimonForsberg nobody expects the Spanish inquisition publicity badges ;-) Congrats!

Q: Profanity in hot questions list

Adam DavisI don't participate enough in PCG to feel I should have a say in whether that community allows profanity in their question titles, and I'm not particularly interested in opening yet another, "Is the language “BrainF_ck” offensive?" question. However, the hot questions list appears on all the net...

^ I think it's that one...

@Vogel612 Thank you. I wanted to draw attention to it because it seemed like you felt I was attacking you, so I wanted to emphasise that I'm not looking to cause an argument - this was just meant to be a quick solution until they can get the HNQ filter fixed

ehh I don't mind..
@Mast want to weigh in here?

Vogel is a hardened beast, not so easy to offend that guy ;-)

@Vogel612 Yes that is the one - thank you. I linked to another question there recently but I won't add this one since it is the same word so they are already aware of it

hmm... I'd better read that MSE question

@CaptainObvious Looks like broken code

@trichoplax I thank you for your concern, I have pinged a community manager in the moderator-only room and asked about the HNQ filter.

@Vogel612 It's the name of the language. The tag is actually , not [tag:brainf*ck]

correct, but it seems there was supposed to be a filter for the HNQ that doesn't seem to work correctly...

However, I've used it as a title before and nobody complained.

@SimonForsberg Thanks

Q: How to speak Brainfuck: for beginners

MastThe following code transforms multi-line input into the the Brainfuck equivalent. One line turns into one program. The resulting programs are split by newlines for readability. Brainf.cpp #include "Brainf.hpp" int main() { std::vector<std::string> userInput; std::string currentLine = "...

I don't mind either way now, but the network-wide exposure may create more drama

So, I'm a bit surprised at the consternation

it's mostly about the fact that this shows up in the HNQ, not about the word "Brainfuck" itself...

@Vogel612 @SimonForsberg What do you think, should we censor?

@Mast it's not you, nor BF - it's the Rest Of The World

Hi @JPN welcome to the 2nd Monitor

@Mast I don't see any reason not to have it in the title, and for questions that don't show up on Hot Networks Questions it doesn't matter. Hopefully they'll fix the HNQ filter soon then sites can decide what to use as titles without affecting each other

@Mast right now, I'm standing by.

@SimonForsberg what happened to André?

inb4 RBA on the question
