Q: Game tag - When to create own tag for games?

Simon André ForsbergI have just created the minesweeper tag and the rock-paper-scissors tag. The reasoning for this was: Rock Paper Scissors (Lizard Spock) is popular enough to deserve it's own tag. (37 questions seem to be applicable for it) Minesweeper has seen some questions (posted by me) not directly related...

@SimonAndréForsberg see this, and perhaps it will influence your thought processes:

Q: Why do we tag questions?

narasMy question—my meta-question as the case may be—concerns the purpose of these words referred to as "tags". Let me be clear: I use tags. The site supports them, so why shouldn't I? My understanding of their reason for existing is tragically incomplete. Are they used for searching? Are they usefu...

it's quite ironic that we still have [beginner]

I know, and it's recommended when you ask a question too ;-)
Hmmm something's broken.... let me restart firefox.

I have noticed @rolfl that you are giving me these links to read but have not explicitly said your opinion about these particular tags.

yeah, Ithink they are a good thing, but I am not sure yet what the threshold is, (which is what your question asks).
Can you check something for me, @Simon?
Can you go to your profile page, go to the 'badges' section.
Notice anything odd?
(I think there's a bug/change...?)

@rolfl Wasn't it possible to sort them on that page before?

I thought so, so it is not just me... ;-)
THanks

12:27 AM
and I think that some tags have becomed Capitalized
Doesn't @StackExchange have anything better to do than capitalizing tags?
This just feels off now...
And it is strange that it's still possible to sort them on your summary page, and when you click on 'view more' it's just... stuck in that ordering

Q: Sorting of badges on the profile page has 'gone'

rolflIt used to be possible to sort your badges by various mechanisms before.... but now, not? I remember three orders, newest, name, and class, if I recall. Now I see: There used to be something there .... Right?

Q: What SEDE examples would be most useful to new users?

Monica CellioThis question asks about an SEDE tutorial, which doesn't really exist. The answer there suggests that you can look at existing queries, which I think is how most SEDE users have learned, but that has a couple challenges: There are a lot of queries out there. Some of them might not be good exam...

4:11 PM
@bazola it makes sense, but I feel that it is not really off topic. Most of the times our code reviews are contain suggestions on how to improve the design. What do you think it would be the right place to ask a design question?

personally I think the question is alright as long as it is real code

Speaking of the "design" topic remember this meta:

Q: Code Review vs. Help me solve my problem

rolflA question that asks: I don't know how to best solve problem X, can you suggest a way? ... is clearly off-topic on Code Review. A question that asks: I have solved problem X, and this is how I did it. Is it a good solution? ... is clearly on-topic on Code Review. There is a grey are...

As long as there is an implementation of an already existing design, it's definitely on-topic here.
When there's only an interface without implementation, it becomes more grey, but can still be on-topic here.

reading it I think that the phrasing of the question could make a huge difference. I mean, there is a working implementation (which is good) and there is a clearly stated unanswered question. Do we consider the explicit question to be bad?

Would removing the question make the question cross the line between on topic and off topic? This is what he asked "My gut feeling says this isn't very nice, as calling Person.register from outside a Group instance would break things. What is the right and elegant way to do this?"

4:31 PM
@mariosangiorgio In my personal opinion, saying "My gut feeling says this isn't very nice, as calling Person.register from outside a Group instance would break things." is kinda like doing a semi-answer yourself. That is OK IMO.

@SimonAndréForsberg I agree. I just wanted to understand better what the guidelines are to consider things on topic or off topic are.

@mariosangiorgio All to often, we consider things "grey" :)
You might want to check into this room where we discuss the topic every now and then:

o/
@skiwi you asked about sublime earlier?

@DanPantry Yeah, I couldn't really properly set it up, so I decided to go with Netbeans and C/C++ support and seems to do it'sjob

Fair enough
For future reference, you install Sublime, then you get the Sublime package manager

Now trying to get it up on Travis

then you do ctrl+shift+p -> install package -> <find the build system you want>

@DanPantry How would I do this?

4:55 PM
turns out - there's no C++ compiler addon for sublime
wai,t nvm, I lied
@skiwi google sublimetext package manager
pick the one for your sublime version (i'm running v2)
execute it in the console of sublimetext (view -> show consonle)
restart sublimetext
now you can use the package manager by typing CTRL+SHIFT+P and entering text
either way this is unnecessary for C++ development asSublime comes with a C++ build system anyway :D
which is as simple as opening your C++ file and going to Tools -> Build System -> C++
then Tools -> Build
(I've set my build system to hotkey on CTRL+B, I suggest you do the same)

But I need to use it for C, couldn't find a working builder there

You can make your ownpretty simply
Tools -> New Build System
change the shell command as appropriate

It gave an error there also... The NB is fine right now ;)

save the file as C.sublime-build and job done :P
I was just saying haha it's possible ^^

Did you have a chance to hook up your C project on Travis?

4:59 PM
I don't write C :-)

good, I neither would

I keep meaning to learn C++

Are you using Ubuntu yourself though?

I am

It's not that bad at all ;-) It's actually quite good
But gaming on it is probably not really working out?

5:04 PM
It's preferable to windows
Yeah.. no
unfortunately awful for gaming :\ gotta WinE it up or switch over to my Windows partition if I wanna play games
but the virtual desktops and just general everything-working-easier on here is a bit benefit
6 screens is incredibly useful, my keypad has never seen such use (keypad 1 through 6 are bound to each screen)

Keypad?

numerical keypad on the right side of my keyboard?

Oh the numpad

numpad, i meant, sorry

Wait, you don't use it to type numbers?

5:06 PM
no
I use the keyboard's standard numbers above the letters lol
mainly because of gaming
can't use your right hand for the numpad in games

well yeah, but then I could only type 1-6 if I had to go on my gaming experience :P

well, yes
that's all I use lol
in games like LoL and Eve you don't need many keybinds

I played a MMO like a year ago with my new keyboard

and in games like WoW (which is the one that is really keybind heavy), I use 1 through 6 and then letters + modifiers

Was using 1-6 + Alt + 1-5 + Ctrl + 1-4 and then a bunch of 10 buttons on my mouse

5:08 PM
123456bnzxcv`tfgh
+ ctrl/shift modifiers of those

Oh and also Q E, Z, X, C, R and T I believe
That's... insane
If you use all of them

have you ever played WOW/
you have 40-60 keys to press usually lol
my keybind list, off the top of my head, is..

Only WoW I playd was until lv 15 I bet, so haven't done the hardcore stuff
Isn't WoW dumbed down since a few years? At least in builds, so also less keybinds?

123456qwertasdfzxcvbngh (+ctrl/shift mods)
TAB `
Side mouse button 1 + 2
dumbed down in terms of PvE content, yes
the only reason I need so many keybinds is for PvP
I play Rogue, which has about 10 abilities you want macros for on your focus.. so thats' another 10 keybinds already
or played rogue, I should say

Last MMO (with many key binds) I played was Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

5:11 PM
Never played that 0.o
Ever since i moved to GW2 and LoL i have seen the light
60 keybinds -> 8, max.

There was sometimes free weekends where people who had a sub once could play again, but I never got into those, because it would take me at least 1 day to learn the game + my own key and mouse binds again

lol i had that issue in WOW but with my UI

There as a free week some time ago, but didn't have time then :(

my keybinds are practically muscle memory at this point

So now I cannot even be bothered to start playing again

5:12 PM
to the point where I have bound the same keybinds to ubuntu/sublime commands |:

You know what is worse?
Keybinds you can see ingame... Mousebinds you can not
So I only see F1 through F12, and need to memorize to which mouse-key they are bound

I hid all my keybinds
it was an eyesore seeing the keys
lol

This is my mouse ^

I have this crappy mouse that hardly works
it has 4 extra buttons, two of which you can actually press
and it took me forever to just get Ubuntu to play nice with it lol

Haha yeah

5:14 PM
the only use the side buttons see are for forward/back in browsers.. :(
I done screwed up moment: I installed Ubuntu (18GB) onto my E drive (500GB).

so now I can only access 18GB of the drive.
and only from ubuntu.
it's remarkable people ask me for tech support in work

Huh... Can you not acess it form inside Windows?

Windows can't mount E because it's of a different filesystem or something like that
I odn't know the technicalities, but basically, no, I can't even see the E drive from Windows
