Q: Menu Bar Animation Plugin

MyCompassSpinsI'm fairly new to JS/jQuery (a few months), and I think it's time to start getting involved in the community. So I wrote a little plugin. Nothing revolutionary. Really, the project is to write a clean, workable plugin. Any and all thoughts and suggestions on how I can make the code cleaner, or th...

Sometimes the disconnect between open source creators and consumers makes me shudder a bit. Every now and then when I go to check on GCC's regex implementation status, I come across gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=53631 and I cringe a bit.
I still can't believe GCC put the regex library in without any kind of implementation. I'll always remember the time I compiled a simple regex hello world, had it compile fine and had it completely fail to run since the implementation is just empty. That's the day I lost a lot of faith in GCC and moved to clang as my preferred compiler :/
(Well, really I understand why they did it. They just should have had the compiler generate an error. They did it so exports of libstdc++ wouldn't change and programs wouldn't have to be recompiled. It's still "Wtf?!" behavior though.)

@chillworld no vacation?

Monking @Vogel612

how's your TCG going?

Dead at the moment..
Other responsibilities :(
It's a secret project, setting up private repo on bitbucket for it atm with issue tracker
Unfortunately github asks money for private repo's

10:26 AM
@Vogel612 vacation? what's that :p

Monking

10:43 AM
I simply cannot believe that we don't learn a single bit about issue tracking, or even project management, at university.

@skiwi: I can confirm this. At my university it is the same

For that 'secret' project (Don't know a better name for it, but it is a target for some big companies), I feel quite embarrassed about already forgetting a bunch of minor details after a meeting one month ago (work was stopped because of university projects, exams, etc.)
Now I know how to work with an issue tracker since I decided to try it out with the TCG, and I should've put all those issues in realtime during the meeting or shortly thereafter

during is better
you almost certainly have already forgotten some details afterwards

It's all quite informal, I mean we're just there with the person witht he diea and I'm goign to develop it

at least that is my experience

10:49 AM
So next meeting we will need to do some big revision and start usign the issue tracker at full capabalities

which also is a nice tool for the client to look at the progress of the project ;)

yep :)
And would stop me from receiving emails for change requests occasionally

don't you get email notifications about changes in your issue tracker?

Well, I could always turn those off if they annoy me
But the old workflow of: Person with idea sends email to me, then I need to write it down somewhere (or look through emails), and make it at a later date, is not nice at all
Now I need to teach him to just enter it in the issue tracker

am I so wrong here?

@Mat'sMug do you understand the point of the program, because I dun remember maths

because his code is not self documenting enough for me to understand it withoud headache

                for (int thirdNum = secondNum + 1; thirdNum <= 4; thirdNum++)
                {
really?

I can understand what he is doing programatically poor, but there is probably a log of shortcuts to be taken here.. like using recursion
right?

12:22 PM
@BenVlodgi please, tell me what the exercise was then :)

@chillworld Iduno

@Vogel612 I agree with @Nobody, decrementing the loop counter is a hack (potentially even more dangerous than a GOTO!) - why not simply extract a method? Like, IEnumerable<int> InputFiveNumbers()...

Still, you have to be good that a lot of ppl don't understand the actual doing of the method
making yourself inreplacable :D

Job security FTW!

12:27 PM
I re-wrote it like dis
for (int i = 0; i <= 4;)
{
    Console.WriteLine("Input number {0}", i + 1);
    if (int.TryParse(Console.ReadLine(), out number))
        Numbers[i++] = number;
}

Does it have to be an array? I mean, is using LINQ cheating? if (numbers.All(n => n == 0)) { result = true; /* ... */ }Mat's Mug 28 secs ago

@Mat'sMug: that was exactly what I wrote
I mean... Array:IList

LINQ actually extends IEnumerable<T> ;)
@BenVlodgi where?

I wrote it in my review (unposted)

ah

@chillworld I believe, when I was a lot less experienced, I wrote a program like that, once.

According to this test, I'm only 57% nerdy.

@Morwenn - you play the recorder in a celtic metal semi-goth band .... you score 110% on nerdy... never fear
3

1:11 PM
@rolfl I do too many non-nerdy things besides the nerdy ones. That's why :o
For example, I go out two to three times a week with friends. What a shame.

Yeah.... that'll blow your nerd-rep ...
Unfortunately, I did that test once... I tried hard to make myself nerdier than I am, but still only scored something like 70%

I'm an undercover nerd. And I almost always prefered French & English classes to math & science classes...

I feel using the else branch to decrement i is a hack (changing the loop variable inside the loop makes the code harder to reason about). The natural controlflow would be do undcontionally increment i in the for loop and make an extra do while loop that exits when a correct number has been entered. — Nobody 2 hours ago
^^^ I agree.

@rolfl I understand that less experience people write things like that, but still it gave me a headache reading it ;)
In school i gave the teacher a heart attack
in vb.net using goto's :D
but the program worked :D

Hey @Malachi - ;-)

1:21 PM
@rolfl hey

Since I knew a did of Python, my teacher almost screamed when I tried to write a, b = b, a to swap variables in C :D

got a half day at work so I have to get some things done

In school, a long time ago, I used basic.... and GOTO. I swore never to do it again...

started here also with gwbasic and qbasic
so its normal that you used it then

Then about 8 years ago I started programming in asssembler for micro-chips... and the goto labels were everywhere

1:22 PM
@morwenn swapping in java is also possible in one statement

lol I got friggin 43%....

but not a to do ding :)
thing

@chillworld It is?

@rolfl integers yes : a=(a+b)-(b=a);

@Vogel612 Don't you know your elements?

1:26 PM
I bet they were all right..
just the questions with the intermingled american education system kinda threw me off..
and with the persons i guessed..

@rolfl what you mean with the scalability test?

@chillworld So it is .... remind me tho shoot anyone who writes that in real code though

@rolfl You should shoot that one guy at PCG.

Just one?
@chillworld The time-complexity of sort is O(n log n), but the competition requires O(n) ... so, as the number of elements in the list doubles, the sort time will more-than-double.... so the test will fail.

//this is a really neat trick for swapping values efficiently

1:32 PM
I see. which, of course, it is not.....

From now on I seem to hold the title of:
Uber Cool Light-Weight Nerd

"Lightly nerd"?

seems light it

@rolfl yes and no. I know when its unsorted and you miss the last element in a huge array you will have more time needed

I wonder if the compilers nowdays would actually make this fast? void swap(long* a,long *b) { *a=*a^*b;*b=*b^*a;*a=*a^*b; }

1:34 PM
but you can see the test results and see that mine sometimes is faster, sometimes longer

@rolfl Don't think so.
@rolfl And it's probably UB for anything but unsigned integers.

@rolfl I hope nobody swaps like that in real code, if compiler rules change your program can crash :)

going to pimp this one it is 21 hours and no votes one way or the other and no comments.

A: CSS3 animations of a turntable

MalachiIf you are going to write HTML code, use HTML Tags <p> for paragraphs <h1> for Main Headers <h2> for secondary Headers <h3>-<h6> for other headers <img> for images You should really look at using other tags and how they are used. HTML Tags have a purpose, use them. Something that I think...

does he really say : Sometimes the community here doesn't like to help with homework. That's why you are getting so many joke answers. But I like to help
That's why he has 2.5k reputation?

@chillworld - it is code-golf, speciffically the code-trolling tag: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/code-trolling
that tag is one of the better ideas that has come through PCG in a while

pffff you won't get that from me
what do you learn of getting code of someone else

@chillworld where are you from?

@Malachi - read his profile ;-) Donck, Belgium

is @Mat'sMug back from his meeting yet?

Why are you guys at work on Easter Friday? Isn't it a holiday?

1:45 PM
@rolfl makes me feel like a creeper doing that all the time.

Profiles are meant to be looked at

we get half a day via a Proclamation by Governor and the Chief Justice

If he did not want you to know, he wouold have left it empty, or put something funny....

holiday? no monday it's a holiday

1:47 PM
I remember having had a holiday thanks to the royal mariage back when I worked in England.

but it's not technically a holiday I guess so it isn't a normal given holiday, every year they give us half of Good Friday off

@rolfl thx for answering malachi
I have a holiday on the king's birthday
15 april :)

just helps when we talk about certain things, it's hard to get the World Mindset when you live in such a small town, (small state less than 800k people)

@Morwenn You got any music up anywhere? :

@Yuushi What kind of music?

1:48 PM
That you play

Oh, of course.

@chillworld That particular site, "Programming Puzzles & Code Golf" is specifically for 'playing games' with programs.... It is sort of the complete opposite of Code Review ... here we take poor code and make it decent/good. there they take decent code and make it crap. About the only things in common, are that we want the code to actually work.

sounds like something I'd be into

anyone have ideas about how to create a list of E-mails that will shoot a person into their outlook from ASP.NET?

1:49 PM
@rolfl yeah I got that after seeing some answers there

@Yuushi But I don't play before 1:45. When we played this song live, I was kind of bored.

they should remove that whole PCG

haha

I want to use a button click, I think I can set most of it up already I just need the process specifics for going from the website to outlook

Reminds me a little bit of Agalloch

1:50 PM
@chillworld I they remove PCG, we'll have to find another nemesis.

@chillworld We are in a bit of a competition with them as a site, by the way:
23
Q: The race has started. Are you running?

Mat's MugPCG.SE is going on a mission. And so the race begins. For Code Review!! -- syb0rg 2 days ago Let's see: Programming Puzzles and Code Golf Voting & Activity PCG.SE Voting and Activity Chart Compare to: Code Review Voting & Activity CR.SE Voting and Activity Chart ...

@Morwenn wait you play the flute?

recorder ;-)

@Yuushi Not the flute, the recorder.

nerdier

1:51 PM
that wasn't me ;)

Yeah, I realized :(

lol

this is pretty good, I'd listen to it...fits my tastes :)

@Yuushi And yeah, we all know of Agalloch, but they're not in our direct inspirations :p

what kind of recorder? video? JK

1:52 PM
@Morwenn How about Alcest?

@Yuushi Never heard of them ^^"

@Morwenn now I am thinking about a character from Harry Potter, does that fit you a little better, do you know who I am thinking of?

lol

I perfer good and performing code than that crap

1:53 PM
@Malachi Are you thinking of Hagrid?

no not the giant

wtf if mine code has 200 lines and there 30

@chillworld - have you seen the StackOverflow 404 page ... it is beautiful in its own way
There is a story behind that page: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/28625/…

@Yuushi The melody is close to the one sang by the dwarves in The Hobbit :D

@Morwenn Heh, I haven't actually seen The Hobbit ><

1:56 PM
actually was looking at something more beautiful : stackoverflow.com/users/2842930/lyou0001

Whatever, the song is nice^^

lol belg of nederlander?

@Morwenn snape

nah, she just accepted an old answer of me

I could so see him playing a recorder

1:58 PM
@Malachi He doesn't play the recorder :o

@chillworld I have learned to be distrustful of pretty users on SE:

@Morwenn I know but when I was listening to that song I imagined him playing it
sometimes my imagination is fun

@rolfl wow I don't want to pass him :)

@Malachi Your mind is a place with distraction. But maybe I can help. I'm testing a new drug that could help you focus.
