@quid I hope your day has been less intense today, @quid.
19:05
Hey everyone, since I don't own this room, I cannot create events, which users can subscribe to for notification, for example for a Friday happy hour. I'm open to suggestions about a time frame on Friday that will work for those most interested. So, @sai-kartik, @Safdar, @user21820, @ParamanandSingh. @CalvinKhor, @an4s, @ArnaudD., @quid, @XanderHenderson, @AlexanderGruber, @Brahadeesh, let's figure on a happy hour tommorrow, and let me know if you'd like to join, and when works best...
that "when" might be a bit earlier than some prefer, and a bit later than others before, (or maybe we can make it "happy hours!? ;D
@amWhy In the next 24 hours I might not be free haha.. Maybe the day after.
=)
@user21820 Well, maybe we can plan a "happy hour" for Friday, and Saturday! Thanks!
Sure!
19:44
@JyrkiLahtonen You're welcome to join our weekly happy hour, too! Looks like this week, we'll plan a Friday happy hour, and a Saturday happy hour, and I'm open to suggestions for best times for each, so everyone can make one or the other! (I couldn't previously ping you!)
It's primarily a BYOB affair, although many are generous, and will post images of a beer or cocktail to provide others with!
19:58
@amWhy 🥂 I'm in on fridays
@JyrkiLahtonen If You'd prefer I not ping you, please just let me know, or else formally "ignore me." I'm sorry for having bothered you.
@sai-kartik sounds Great!!
btw, @amWhy what exactly do we do during happy hours here?
@sai-kartik Bring your own beverage, and plan to have fun, relax, joke, etc. Just a time for everyone to unwind/decompress! ;D
@amWhy not really. :-/
@amWhy ahh sweet
20:05
@quid :/ You going to try to make happy hour tomorrow, or Saturday?
@quid you still loaded with work a lot ?
@amWhy I can try, but I won't be very present. I can create an event though if that would be useful
@quid If your too busy, don't worry about it. We want you to be present, when you're present :-)
@amWhy that's right @quid.. it won't be good for you if you would put half of your attention here and the rest half elsewhere. Just finish what you have to do and join us at any time you like !
I guess it won't be better the next one or two weeks.
20:13
@quid :/
we'll wait!
(you will be missed tho)
@sai-kartik I'll check by briefly.
See you !
@quid good day !
@quid Is it this semester in particular, or both getting the semester underway, while also working on research/publication?
We don't need to know the details. All, I'm sure all of us hope, is that you take care of yourself. We'll survive, all of us, if we absolutely have no choice! ;D
20:39
I'm afraid, for the time being, that whatever @quid will not be hosting any happy hours on Friday nor Saturday. Perhaps we can create a room for that purpose. I'm happy to hear ideas!

1 hour later…
21:43
I wish I could move my no longer relevant comments to Trash. Sorry folks for the false alarm about happy hours in this room. Again, I'm open to suggestions. Maybe we should create a room like meta.se has: something like "Tavern on the..." or "Fractalicous Tavern" (thought you might like the last one, @Xander!)
@amWhy Why are fractals so conceited?
'cause they're full of themselves.
(ba-dum-tish)
@XanderHenderson Hah! ;D Good one!
Do you know what the "B" in "Benoit B Mandelbrot" stands for?
It stands for "Benoit B Mandelbrot".
@XanderHenderson No, but I'm afraid to ask!
@XanderHenderson I think I heard that one before!!
According to my advisor, he added the initial himself, very possibly to make that specific joke.
21:46
Or, a chatroom "Axiom of one's Tavern Choice!"
@XanderHenderson That's hilarious. Sort of reminds me of jokes about recursion!
Definition: recursion, see "recursion".
@XanderHenderson Exactly. If you check out my Google search, entering "recursion" yields the Google question, "did you mean recursion"!
@amWhy Yeah, I've seen that before. It always makes me think, for a moment, that I can't spell "recursion".
21:51
@XanderHenderson They've got us trained well! I do the same thing!! ;D
How's it going, @Xander, currently, with teaching? Have you finished in CA?
Word search in SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!! Any takers? I might sit this one out!.
"Even though the sound of it is really quite atrocious!"
Sorry, @Xander.
Sorry; students are trying to turn in an exam and failing misserably.
One more week in Cali.
Ugh... I'm tired. And I have to teach again from 6-9. :\
22:53
@XanderHenderson Yikes, one more week! Ugh, but after one more week, Yay, for you! Good luck tonight!
I wonder... if I pour a beer while teaching... would that be unprofessional?
;)
23:09
@XanderHenderson If a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it, ... ;)
I think you're safe it you first pour it at 8:00 pm. (As long as you don't guzzle it and follow up with two more guzzled beers!)
Got it. I'll stick with martini's, then.
Hrm... Either the drinking age needs to be lowered to 18 in the US, or we need to extend high school to the age of 21.
Then I wouldn't have to feel weird about admitting to students that I do, on occasion, imbibe an adult beverage.
Fun story: several years ago, I was trying to get a colleague to come to the bar with us for happy hour on a Friday evening.
He had, like, a billion students in his office.
I said "Beer?"
He said, "No, I gotta thing tonight."
"You could come get a beer, then go to the thing."
"Nah, they're gonna serve wine there."
I put on my most sarcastic, bro-iest voice, and said "Bruh! You gots tah PREGAME!"
Hah! ;D
He cracked up, entirely getting that I was making fun of that kind of attitude, and I said g'night.
As I'm leaving, I hear a student say "WOW! The professors talk JUST LIKE us!"
@XanderHenderson Hah! Yeah, dats da truf!
I don't think that this sweet summer child understood sarcasm. :\
23:23
I still don't quite understand how students could be required to register for a potential draft at 18, or are entitled to sign a contract with the military to serve and potentially die for their country, at 18, but aren't mature enough to drink until 21? So I agree with you: if they're dead set on 21 as the legal age to drink, then high school until 21, and no one can register for, nor enlist, in the armed forces. Imagine how military bases enforce (or not) such legal age requirements?
...currently? Anyway, I came of age when the legal drinking age in the US was 18. Currently, I can't imagine the difficulty of enforcing this on college campuses, or in military barracks!
@Xander ^^^ (Sorry, I didn't ping earlier.)
Ugh, @Xander I'm going to need to reserve close votes for the last hour before the end of the SE day, because all sorts of PSQs seem to creep in at that time, unaddressed (likely because most of us have expired our close votes by then!)
@amWhy Yeah, I've always found that weird.
@amWhy And then there are folk who feel that closing any question is a disaster. :\
@XanderHenderson Yup. I know that all too well! :/
There is a recent sequence of posts in "gentle" which highlights the issue.
@XanderHenderson Yes, but in gentle, it seems to be mainly closing any questions that a few selected frequenters of Gentle answered is a disaster.
In all fairness, I do not think Gentle started up with the intent to be self-serving to a few answerers, but it seems to have drifted that way.
Indeed.
I think that there are a couple of people of good faith who started off in gentle, but they have mostly migrated to CURED.
23:35
@XanderHenderson Indeed. Anyway, you best make sure you eat some dinner, and prepare anything you need to prepare, before your class tonight! :-)
Oh, yeah... I should get some food.
@XanderHenderson Yeah, feeding oneself adequately is a good thing! :-)
Yikes, and now this!.
23:56
Unfortunately, I think my comment to that asker in that meta post generated a retaliatory downvote against me from that asker.
