I'm installing a space heater, so this room will not freeze, @quid. Burr. ;D

I am having trouble figuring out how to invite a fairly new user (rep at 25) to a chat? Do you know how to do it?

@user2661923 How do I invite a user to chat? I think the user in question need to have chat profile. (So that's something they have to do themselves.)

Q: How do I invite a user to chat?

tatanYesterday, discussion in my question's comment section was getting long so I transferred it to chat and had a long talk with another person. Now, if I want to talk to that user in chat what should I do? Is there any way to invite him again to that chat room? Thanks for any help.

I just tried it with a math user named quid who I am fairly sure has a profile. for some reason, I could not get to his chat profile to click the link.

What does it mean "I could not get to his (her) chat profile"?
quid's chat profile is accessible here: chat.stackexchange.com/users/83129/quid
BTW who is the user who you're trying to contact?

But how do you get to that link from chat.stackexchange.com/users/ ?

@user2661923 Searching by username.
I'll just repeat that if it is relatively new user, it's quite possible that the user does not have a chat profile.

If you mean filling in the user's name in the upper right hand corner, that does not seem to work.

As you see in the screenshot, it works for quid.
Who are you actually trying to contact?

I experimented with quid, who (as you showed) does have a chat profile. But when I search for quid, I simply get a webpage with his messages, not his profile. How do I in general get to the profile of someone when all I know is their user name.
Your screenshot shows that quid has a chat profile. but the screenshot does not show how to get to it.

You have to search among users. That is different from searching for chat messages.
For users, you have to search on the page with users: chat.stackexchange.com/users
This is explicitly mentioned in the post on meta:
> You first need to find this users chat profile either by searching among users or simply by clicking on they username in chat.

A: How do I invite a user to chat?

Martin SleziakAs the link in quid's answer explains, you can create a new room for you or another user. I will add that it is also possible to invite a user to already existing room. You first need to find this users chat profile either by searching among users or simply by clicking on they username in chat.1...

I just tried chat.stackexchange.com/users. the only search window that i saw is in the upper right hand corner. when i typed quid into that window, i got his messages, not his profile. how do i get to his profile from chat.stackexchange.com/users ?

Who is the user you're actually searching for? (That information would be helpful for other users who might be able to help.)
@user2661923 Not that one. The window where you see: "filter users".

10:20 PM
Thank you so much. You just SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THIS WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY. Thank you again. Filter uses : would have never occurred to me.

Yes, I got that. I implemented your idea : re filter users, and IT WORKED.

Well, as I said, this is what the post on meta says.
Out of curiosity - using this, did you manage to find the user you're trying contact?

Really. When I searched the meta post, I saw that it said search for user. Perhaps I was careless. Did it specifically say use the filter users window?

Maybe it's worth adding that clarification. (It did not occur to me that somebody would try searching somewhare else.)
One thing to keep in mind is the user might have different username in chat and on the main site. (I guess this happen most often when they have user on a different site as a parent user.)

As far as chatting with others, I am good to go. As far as the meta-post goes, I strongly suspect that I am not the only one puzzled by this. Anyway, thanks very much for your patience. As far as the user having a different name, if worse comes to worse, and I am already exchanging messages with them in (for example) a mathSE query, then I suppose that I could simply join a room, and then cut/paste the url into a message and ping them with it. this will work, right?

I have edited my answer on meta to mention "filter users": math.meta.stackexchange.com/posts/25844/revisions
@user2661923 I will explicitly say that there are various ways how to link to something in chat - depending on what you need. (Link to a room, transcript, specific message.)
I have used many times a comment with a link to chat. It all depends on the situation.
See you later! (It's getting quite late in my timezone.)
