QMC surely needs a tag in my opinion. I already manually changed convergence-test to numerical-convergence, which I think we should keep as there's plenty of questions about it. ab-initio is probably good for people that want to follow everything ab-initio related. I think "structure" is not bad and has been used a lot. solar-cells can be kept for anyone interested in solar-cells.

molecular-modeling is another tag which seems too broad. If materials-modeling is black-listed I see no reason why that should also not be black-listed.
or is the point of molecular-modeling to differentiate it from periodic systems?
I'm not sure how "structure" tag was used correctly. it's been used twice, one in a closed question.
i think solar cells can stay. I imagine Heavy-elements is synonymous with relativistic effects since that is usually what one thinks about. One-dimension may be ok I'm not sure how this is used, defects is also probably ok.
my only qualm with numerical-convergence, and now accuracy, is that they apply to vastly different topics so it's hard to like those tags IMO. The best analogy that I can think of is "yield" in Chemistry. Such a tag does not exist in Chemistry.SE
I just think it's time for culling some tags, we are at like 181 tags. More than half of them have only 1 question associated with them. the latter is not unexpected considering the breath of topics, but I think we can easily get down to like 150 tags

I think you're right that molecular-modelling allows people to differentiate questions from periodic systems. Sorry I didn't know about "structure"... I was thinking "crystal-structure" which has 10 questions. "structure" does not have any closed questions though. I think "geometry" or "structure" needs to exist. So much work is about geometry-optimization or geometry of molecules in general. structure might also become popular. It's impossible to predict.
heavy-elements is most certainly not synonymous with relativistic. In my answer to Roman Korol's question, and Verktaj's comment on it, relativistic effects were included for the Hydrogen atom. I always include relativistic effects for H, He, Li, Be, etc. I go for accuracy.
@CodyAldaz Can you see my last message on Messenger, please?

ahh yes
i'm just thinking we need to clean up a few tags since that is an important statistic for a private beta
perhaps the best compromise right now is to just remove a few of the tags which are synonymous.
e.g. magnetism and magnetic-field.
nanoparticles and nanostructures
i don't mean statistic, but I recall that having clean tags was an important factor for a private beta becoming public and eventually graduating.
anyway, i just thought it would be a good time to clean up a few tags and threw out a few ideas. It's actually not that bad and I don't want to create any dispute over this.
this is the tags chat anyway.

Okay in order to make this very easy. I'll go through and list some tags that I think can be removed and if anyone has any objection, no matter if I think it's valid, the tag stays. I'll await response until tomorrow to cull the list.
1. optimization -> geometry optimization
2. structure
3. Accuracy

5. Lanthanide
6. Titanium
7. Spin-mode vs Ising Model? Keep one?
8. Coordination
9. Nanostructure vs nanoparticle. Can we have one tag for both, which?
10. Cuprates
11. integrals
12. Partial-differential equations
13. Geometry
14. alloys
okay well i think that's good for now

I will put a star next to the ones I want to keep.

awesome!
oh maybe a few more..

It would be useful if you could make these clickable, because I want to see how people are using the tags.

5:22 AM
how do i do that?

I wrote it to you in Messenger

Okay one more time, sorry chat

Also if someone has spent a lot of time making a tag wiki or thoughtful tag excerpt, then I would be less keen to remove the tag, for now.

1. -> geometry-optimization
7. vs ? keep one?
if not 11. then 23. [tags:integrals] -> electron-repulsion-integrals
what I mean by 9 is can a single tag be used like nanomaterial

6:00 AM
geometry -> geometry optimization.
Nanostructure and nanoparticles can be combined into nanomaterial, but people will still make the nanoparticiles tag and maybe also nanostructure tag. We don't know how often. Maybe we should wait a bit for that one, otherwise we could be wasting our time.

New users can't create tags tho
It takes 1500 reputation once fully graduated

We can delete "accuracy" and "structure" but I worry they'll just come back again.
So I think the only ones I would agree with are:

1. geometry -> geometry-optimization (maybe .. I still think people might have something other than optimization in mind)
2. thermal -> temperature (maybe, we haven't been around for long enough to know)
3. magnetic-field -> magnetism.

If you want to go ahead and do the magnetism one, I don't think anyone would object (maybe we can wait until tomorrow to see if anyone objects). The other ones I think can wait a bit.

6:21 AM
Well I think this discussion of tags was useful even if only a few tags were removed. Let's leave the tags alone for now (besides the few that didn't pass muster). I think for now let's just have a lenient approach on tagging. It's best for now to see what kind of questions we are going to get before trying to restrict tags. Later we can decide more clearly how we want to manage tags if at all
By the latter I mean if we pass public beta 😵

Hey all
Was wondering if you could help me at all.
I'm playing around with a snippet on this meta post: https://codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/18632/stack-exchange-api-sandbox
Ideally, I'd like to give the option to run it without displaying the code. Anyone know how?

@AJFaraday i assume you meant to post in TNB?

Yes, although it's empty in there at the moment
