@JourneymanGeek i tried to boot from ubuntu server usb but it displays some lines on the screen after selecting install ubuntu server option from grub

You mean you had 13.04, upgraded to 13.10, and windows 8 upgraded to 8.1... right?

(not sure what that has to do with your RAM, btw)

what you really need to do is cut it down to what you need, and virtualise the rest.

ubuntu server effectively is just a stripped down, X-less ubuntu desktop

smart money is on running whatever applications you need on your ubuntu system itself

I have 2 1tb external USB HDDs, one 500gb USB HDD and 3tb internal HDD for longer term storage
