The old show always used the term "race" when talking about Pegasi, Unicorn and Earth Ponies
as for the thing, basically gone a thousand year back in time to pre-Celestia&Luna age
wouldn't be surprised if they used windingo.
That said, there are claims they want to use.... get ready....

because they hadn't already trashed his background enough in season 9 apparently.
they had to pull him in the movie to (if that is true)
And as you probably remember I am already salty enough with them including him in season 9 with no regard at all for the story arc conclusion the comics already gave him
There is only one worth sequel to the Sombra arc and it is Siege of Crystal Empire.
Everything else is just an attempt to de-canonize a comic story that is better than anything the show has done so far with the character
(First appearance of Sombra in the show was a two part premiere that was originally meant to be a three part episode.... and the cuts shows. He basically has no bg, no motives and little spoken lines. The second appearance is in the show finale and it is little more of a cameo that only manage to make the comic not canon. And also turn what was presented as Sauron-level foe into basically a joke)
Lucky, the 9th show season version of Sombra is so out of character that you won't miss much if you assume it was an illusion Discord made for added fun.
