@b_jonas I don't think Celestia exactly made it a point to keep ponies up-to-date about what she probably considered her biggest failure in life.
I expect that Luna was officially claimed as "lost in action" during the brief Nightmare Moon crisis
Furthermore, the fact that most ponies didn't even realize that Luna was there is kinda the reason that made that incident happen in the first place, so...
> Princess Celestia: Twilight Sparkle, my faithful student. I knew you could do it.
Twilight Sparkle: But... you told me it was all an old pony tale.
Princess Celestia: I told you that you needed to make some friends, nothing more. I saw the signs of Nightmare Moon's return, and I knew it was you who had the magic inside to defeat her, but you could not unleash it until you let true friendship into your heart. Now if only another will as well. Princess Luna!
Princess Luna: [gasp]
Princess Celestia: It has been a thousand years since I have seen you like this. Time to put our differences
episode 1:
> But as time went on, the younger sister became resentful. The ponies relished and played in the day her elder sister brought forth, but shunned and slept through her beautiful night. One fateful day, the younger unicorn refused to lower the moon to make way for the dawn. The elder sister tried to reason with her, but the bitterness in the young one's heart had transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness: Nightmare Moon.
> Twilight Sparkle: Ah! Elements, Elements, E, E, E... Aha! Elements of Harmony, see: Mare in the Moon?
Spike: Mare in the Moon? But that's just an old ponies' tale.
Twilight Sparkle: Mare, mare... aha! The Mare in the Moon, myth from olden pony times. A powerful pony who wanted to rule Equestria, defeated by the Elements of Harmony and imprisoned in the moon. Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape, and she will bring about nighttime eternal! [gasp] Spike! Do you know what this means?
Celestia's replies:
> Spike: [clears throat] My dearest, most faithful student Twilight. You know that I value your diligence and that I trust you completely.
Twilight Sparkle: Mm-hm!
Spike: ...but you simply must stop reading those dusty old books!
Now to play logic.
If Celestia is indeed the pony from the tale (like she is, but did Twily realize that?) she obviously know what happened and she knows that the tale is true.
But Celestia dismiss that. So what is left for Twily to think?
a) Celestia is lying. No way Twily would think that - for her Celestia is absolute perfection.
b) thinking that Celestia is NOT the same princess the story was about, and because of that she doesn't know that the story is true. This would obviously mean she would be surprised to discover that Celestia IS the one from the tale.
c) thinking that the tale is embellished and didn't happen that way and that is the reason Celestia tells her that is a "dusty book". In this case Twily may think that the sister part is fake and be surprised to discover that is true
I think the most reasonable option is B)
Or... simple error like you said - she wasn't mean to join Dash's surprised remark

@SPArcheon Yes, but there should be history books written by other ponies. Twilight reads a lot of books, she gets viewpoints other than Princess Celestia.
About Nightmare Moon, I can understand that there aren't many good books describing what happened a thousand years ago, the ones that remain can be hard to distinguish from fairy tales. And Celestia may have actively removed some books from circulation, because recall that there are wings of the Canterlot library that are locked up and not easily to research by the general public.
But Sunset Shimmer should be much more recent history, unless there's some weird timey-whimey going on. I can't really exclude that of course.

But it's possible that Princess Celestia was much more discreet about his relationship with Sunset Shimmer, who may or may not have been her daughter, she didn't want all the distractions of everyone taking paparazzi photographs of Sunset. She has the influence and magic that she may have been able to keep the general public uninformed about Sunset.

Even IF the book had pictures like the ones in the intro, they aren't that clear...
It can match Celestia but...

It needn't have gone like Cadence, with a big feast for the baptism of her daughter.

I mean, if you base your though on the picture alone, the original sister was Marigold.

9:42 AM
@SPArcheon It's not really just the sister, more like the beginning of that old story “Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together and created harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn; the younger brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects, all the different types of ponies.”;

(minus the cardboard wings)

and the other legends, including the flag of Equestria:

@b_jonas yes, the point is that I don't know if at that point it was a known fact that Celesta was indeed the same Celestia from back then.

But yes, it could refer to another pair of unicorns who raised the sun and moon before Princess Celestia.

considering that the average pony basically knows Nightmare Moon only because of an halloween-style yearly festival..

9:45 AM
@SPArcheon The average pony doesn't live in a library.
And the average pony didn't know about Starswirl the Bearded when Twilight did.

@b_jonas and yet apparently she only heard about the "Element" once before reading about them again in the show intro.

Do we know how long ago Sunset left to the human lands? I think we know from the photos that she at least aged while being there.

@b_jonas only indication:
Twily doesn't have any mark here
but one would point out that the comic isn't perfect, for example Moon Dancer looks different in the comic

Let me find those photos.
Nope, it doesn't actually look like she aged.
She won the Princess of the Fall Formal crown three times, which means at least three years, but she may as well have been a human teenager for centuries.

@b_jonas Ash rule:
Started his journey with Pikachu at 10.

9:54 AM
Wait!
Celestia says in EG1: “Sunset Shimmer. A former student of mine. She began her studies with me not long before Twilight.”

Had mentioned at least two "first meeting Pikachu" anniversaries.
I think there is even a "Misty's birthday" episode.
Should be at least 12 by now.
He is still 10.

Of course we can only guess what the thousand year old Princess Celestia means by “not long before”

@b_jonas The "not long" of a thousand years pony, exactly
Issue 40#.
Some time after the egg hatched, Celestia's decides to offload it to Twily.
Notice the picture above.
is that a last minute fix?
Like they drawn Sunset there and then realize that was totally impossible?
(notice: it is Sunset, with Rarity mark.)

Also the sirens have been banished to the human world a very long time ago, and they can still pass as teenagers.

@b_jonas The sirens had some sort of magic with them. Btw, the comic also gives explanation of what actually happened... until the two last seasons with the pillar and shadow pony ruined it
BTW, Sires are one of the cut parts of EG.
I think it was planned to have them become friends with Sunset & co.
Probably Sonata was the one who would have turned "good" first
with the series cut down to bare bone, we only get their return

10:55 AM

11:41 AM
Kibi Kibi No Mi?
Trying to become Tama?
or is Tama a chibi Rarity?
Hair color matches to be fair...

If this one hadn't that subtle blush, it would be a perfect candidate to replace Shadow official scolding picture.
The dull, "you never learn" look.. is perfect.
