@DanHulme That's actually a stack-able question... I would design the whole outer part first and then make a "cookie Cutter" for mating/separation patterns.
For working surfaces (the inside of a piston cylinder for example) I would use it to orient my print, so this piece gets best print (cylinder-cuts at 45 or less degrees - and later sanded, flats flat...
