My original question was directed at a specific user of a specific company for specific behavior on questions in my opinion he shouldn't have been asking. @PolyGeo I have the same issues with you, but at least you're generally polite. The user in question is never polite. To me he represents a stain on the GIS.SE community, and he withholds that he works for software company while he posts (and yes, he does this on Company time).
I assumed the question would get treated as it did, but I'm super happy to see the support it got from those who are using FOSS4G software. The amount of reaction from those working for said company, and those who use its software, was what was troubling about this entire thread. But its par for the course from the interactions I have with these people on the streets and at conferences, so why expect anything different here?

I'm going to step up my rhetoric with the user in question when I see them continuing their behavior. The overall SE support and the GIS.SE support on this user has been next to nothing, and I now know why. Perhaps it will be my amplified behavior against this user that will get me in trouble - wouldn't that be a corker!
Thank you all who contributed to this discussion!!!

@DPSSpatial I talked to the user in question yesterday and he told me that he almost never charges time for gis.SE. He is more highly restricted on his charge codes and how he can charge time then I am, or you were when you worked for Esri. Please stop stating that he's doing this on Company time.
@DPSSpatial Could he be active during the day--sure--just not charging the time.

I couldn't figure out which user is being talked about but I think there were two valid questions in the original text. 1) should users have to report their employer (imho: no), and 2) how to deal with someone who is bashing/trolling certain parts of our community.
Personally, I probably wouldn't have gone beyond editing out the company name but I'm ok with focusing the thread on one of the questions
