Q: 80-bit vs 128-bit security in today's world

newJavaCoderIn today's world of applications, I see a lot of the time a 256-bit encryption key is used, but what about an 80 or 128? What makes 256 the one to use. Is a 80 or 128 easily decrypted? Are comp ciphers better than others with the encryption of these keys?

@kelalaka I see an error: the formula goes log(HashRate*10^6*10^12*31536000,2).n()+1)where the +1 is here to convert from sha256d to SHA-256, but the result is shown as counting SHA-256D, which I read as sha256d. Just remove the D and that problem is fixed.
Also, when I examine the source you quote, the data for peak hash is
2021-02-09 00:00:00,165861253.1121619
I propose $>2^{93}$ SHA-256 hashes per year on February 2021, which matches the title of your edit.
This avoids stating the exact day, and allows for some error in the reported number due to delayed accounting.

@fgrieu yes, you are right. Two formulas mangled!

I have a question based on some unrelated mathematics that I just went through. as key length is basically the driver of cipher security, regarding the s-box, is there a proof for minimization where you need only x amount of bits? Where's the weak s-box vs. key boundary?
I'm sure this is out there somewhere, but I'm unsure what to look for. :/

Tiny encryption algorithm, that shows that even an insecure round function can be made secure with enough rounds. It is a matter of optimization, low round function complexity, and low round count.

I was hoping there was a graph or something.

@forest I mean we're on Stackexchange.com where major people have anonymous blank profiles (versus mine with a real name you can pay for USA citizen background check), and I am the one being asked? :∫ Seriously asking, or will I get attacked/moderated again for answering a user's personal question?
Is "@forest=>@prosody-GabVereableContext I hate to ask this here but I have to. What does your profile information mean? I am seriously having trouble parsing it." a question I can feel free to answer here?

3:54 PM
@prosody-GabVereableContext more text tends to raise more questions and your profile's "about me" is rather long. I also think that forest is serious with this question.

@SEJPM Is this the appropriate room to ask and answer personal profile questions?

@prosody-GabVereableContext it has been asked here and we tend not to have too much activity, so sure. Though of course note the usual disclaimer that everything here is public (though we have no "don't doxx yourself" policy here)

That moment Paul Uszak post a comment to a Meta Q&A from 2016 and makes you log in. facepalm Hi everyone. Hope you are all doing fine?

@e-sushi He returns :D

@e-sushi happy potato dance about your return

lol – the dream team is still here. hug Good to see you’re all alive and well.

@prosody-GabVereableContext you are a user of this site and this is the site's general chat, so sure. If you prefer a different room (though I wouldn't know which), you could also go there, I'm optimistic forest would follow if asked.
@e-sushi I sure hope you too are still alive and well and not hidden away in a secret bunker in Russia ;)

roger, thinking.
"Member for 6 years, 7 months

@SEJPM Nah. Been a bit bunkered down last year when things kicked in and folks got a bit paranoid. But meanwhile I am out in the open again, mainly ranting out in the open while aggressively explaining to “those who are inapt to wear a mask correctly” that they are doing it wrong. rofl Since I can still rant, I must be still alive and well. If not, I’m the scariest fish-skeleton around and not aware of my death just yet. ;)

@prosody-GabVereableContext the profile view may have been me trying to figure out what you were responding to ;)
@e-sushi good to hear. Do you still use fancy memes to offset the rants? :p

4:04 PM
When I get pinged on Facebok.com I edit my About Me there from the signals, now I have reason to edit my profile here from the specific signals here. :P Give me few hours, I will try to read y'll minds and make it spunky.

@SEJPM Yes. But my use of memes has shifted from “therapy” to “visual comment”. Probably an upgrade.
@prosody-GabVereableContext Just thinking out loud here but I just skimmed your profile. Please don’t get me wrong, but if I would ever need to ping you, I would not really know where to start. Maybe wrap it up into “a single point of contact“ or two? That would definitely make it easier. ;) Looking at myself:ppl can catch me at twitter (1 account, not several like you do) and/or email.
Simple, quick, easy. I too got lost once in the sea of options – then sanity set in by reminding me of the KISS principle. Hope that helps…
Oh wait, I should probably have Cesar encrypted that to remain on-topic in a crypto(graphy) chat. lol

@e-sushi Fvb tlhu sprl aopz? :D

@e-sushi we did have a dedicated chat room for talking in ciphertext only until recently
(then it died from inactivity)

@J-- YVA ZLCLU? YLHSSF? YVMS
@SEJPM Please tell me ppl didn’t use symmetric encryption for that. ;)

@e-sushi I'm not entirely sure what they used, but it seemed like a rather simple text-based encryption scheme

@e-sushi hi there.

Should have an event day where all questions and answers must be PGP'd :D

I wonder how long it would take before it gets VERY frustrating.

@J-- So, this is where we end up now? “QLIWB VKLIWB URW UDQGRPQHVV”? OMG, I didn’t miss anything then. ;)
@kelalaka Heya!

@e-sushi hahahhaha :D I love that response.

@J-- about two posts

@SEJPM I'm saying two posts and a single comment before you (the mods) loses it.

Aaaanyway… gotta hunt some food at the local shops now. Was nice to see a few (partly rebranded) familiar faces. When time lets me, I’ll be sure to drop by again one of these days. Until them, stay safe y’all!

Lol, An OP hash decided to accept an answer then turned their vote to downvote and accept the other question. And no comment for the change!
