Wow. I just realised how nicely our close reasons evolved over time.

When I joined the site we had one which essentially said "migrate to security.se", another one essentially saying "we don't recommend books" and a third one saying "we don't analyze ciphertext"

And now we have significantly broadened the last one and completely removed the first two

(though they are still applicable)

But now have the much more useful "read up how SO / CR works and ask there" in addition to "please do your homework / puzzles yourself"

Q: Cracking a hash when you know the result?

If I know that the algorithm used is SHA1 constructed as salt+key, and I have the result, is it possible to find the salt? Example: sha1(saltExamplealturkovic) => 4e6a306ff65e252571f36972949f45e513b79ba7 In this example, I know that the input value is alturkovic, the result is 4e6a306ff65e252...
