@Aurelius If you encrypt first, then compression will have more or less no effect
but compressing before encrypting can invite attacks based on the size of the message
so if you must compress, you'd have to do it first

Q: Cannot remove a tag because I did'nt change in the text

kelalakaWhen I want to remove an unrelated tag from a question, I faced a problem; The system doesn't allow to save me because I didn't modify the text. Adding, however, a tag doesn't require to touch the text. There is nothing I want to change, all I want is remove the tag. There is a way to overcome ...

Binary encrypted data is not compressible. So if you do it after you may as well not compress at all.
If it's something like file backup then it's probably fine to compress first.

I agree with @FutureSecurity here. Some times compressed data sizes may leak information about the plaintext, so you must be a bit careful.
That said, *uncompressed* data may leak information as well. Basically you should always remind yourself that the ciphertext size says something about the plaintext size.
For backups this is unlikely to be an issue though.

Oh, boy, I just handed out some rep to Paul for the question if the Kerchhoffs principle is still valid. Of course I also voted down the answer he gave, and I deliberately didn't delete so we can keep showing what we think about that answer :)

Hi Henry, browsing around the chat rooms?

@MaartenBodewes ?

Took a short look at your profile as I didn't recognize you, so I presumed you were just going through the contents here.

@MaartenBodewes Oh no it's a common thing for me to be in many rooms.
If that's what you meant.
HWHH out!

Yeah, that's what I meant, Mr Ghost :)

WRT to Kerckhoffs principle, some rebellion should be welcomed. As long as we don't get overrun with users that all think perpendicular to the common ground then bad answers can be very helpful, if just for showing that we are not agreeing with the answer.
