I think the most appealing thing about makoto shinkai's work is that you get the sense of something new but also feel a sense of nostalgia at the some time. the foreground really blends into the background, making it feel as if you were looking at a painting instead of a movie

It seems to me that in a lot of anime (Naruto, Dragon Ball, Gurren Lagann, and Digimon are three that come to mind), characters or creatures who perform an attack tend to shout its name, almost as if necessary to perform such an attack. This seems very counterintuitive—telling your opponent that ...
