I'm not sure I get the it's fun to win rule, does it just mean you play untill the end? For the second part yes I agree completely and things are going in the right direction. — Hakaishin 1 min ago

Alternatively, you could pause a moment, deep in thought, and reply "No, I don't think so. But hey, now that you mention it, I saw a Scandinavian* looking guy on the sidewalk, do you know him?" *Yes, I know the Netherlands isn't in Scandinavia, but it makes the point. It could just be changed to "... x looking guy" where "x" is a group with a skin tone to match the "friend". — FreeMan 1 min ago

This is kind of similar to suggesting to play only cooperative games: changing the games we play is, of course, an option (and of course this behavior already influences what games we buy or play), but the question is about changing the behavior, if that is possible. So unless this answer leads towards changing behavior (in which case it should spell that out because it’s not clear to me), this doesn’t really help me much. — KRyan 22 secs ago

I can't see much value in adding "American". If you have four black people, one American, one British, one French, one African, would you say "there is one black American" or "there are four black people"? — gnasher729 45 secs ago

Can you talk a little more about your experiences? It would help me understand better where you’re coming from. Anyway, +1 just because this answer seems to actually be interfacing with the question rather than dodging it. — KRyan 1 min ago

I do this, but as you note, this isn’t actually an answer to the question—and since I already do this, this isn’t actually useful to me. The goal is to share that enjoyment with my wife, not just to get my “fix.” I already know how to do that, and while I’m fine if that’s the best I can do, the point of this question is to see if I can possibly do better. If your answer is that I cannot, you need to back that up, I think. — KRyan 2 mins ago

Dominion might not work well (frankly, I tend to avoid the attack cards in Dominion because I find many of them suck all the enjoyment out of the game), but you might well be on to something there with ideas like Connect 4. I mean, I’d want a somewhat more involved game than that, but I doubt she’d find anything objectionable about blocking someone in that. I wonder what the difference is... I agree with you that I feel like there is one, anyway, so +1. — KRyan 1 min ago

I also don't recommend this (didn't downvote though). I've had a friend who was a sore loser, and while more people means less chance of losing, when she was losing it was just awkward for everyone involved. It didn't appear she had less of a tantrum. I mean, she didn't leave the game but we pretty much wrapped it up quickly to get out of there and vowed to never play with her again. These weren't close friends though, so perhaps if inviting more people to play, invite people who are aware of the sore loser (for lack of a better term), perhaps parents or family, or close friends — Tas 2 mins ago
