Hi! Are you a retired teacher or a totally math enthusiast? :)
As I first encountered your profile your reputation was around 7k or 9k, and since then you gained many more reputations here in such a short time and I also remember you hit 10k by answering my question:) Most of the time you are here I guess. I wondered if you are retired(spending/enjoying the rest of your life here) or a hardworking student. Either way I appreciate your enthusiasm about math :)
I wish I have found this place earlier, even highschool students inspire/surprise me a lot..

Hi Leyla, yes I well remember of you, even if I meet many people here I have a good memory for people :)
No I'm not retired at all, I'm just a math enthusiast, maybe like you!
Yes also for me, I wish I have found this kind of comunity earlier, it is really a great opportunity to learn

Then you're doing good work here :)
Are you doing a post-doc or sth ?

For the moment I like it, I don't know how much I'll continue, now I've time to spend here, in teh future I don't know :)

People that once get here, they stuck in here hahah

ahahah...mayb ;)...I've been in Istanbul, anout 4-5 years ago, very nice city, the situation maybe was better at that time then now, but I don't know precisely.
*about

10:02 PM
Even people ask questions in meta about how to get out of here, as it becomes a total addiction :)

very good idea!

Wow you've been here, its nature is really good I can tell hahah

really really nice!
So you are a math student at Istanbul, what kind of specialization you are aimed to take in the future?

Clearly, I won't be a mathematician at somewhere, but will be here as long as I live :)
I think doing math needs some skills that are inherited, and I don't think I have been gifted by those skills

So would you like to teach or to work in some other field? What kind of opportunities do you have there?

10:08 PM
So, instead I am aiming working in IT maybe when I graduate

Well it's good that you love the place where you live!
I'm from Italy :)

So you are definitely graduate, but are you continuing in academia?
I know you are here to teach but it doesn't suggest anything more :)

Nooooooo I'm here to learn! Absolutely to learn!

but you especially answer the questions hahah, have you had a question that I missed? :)

Yes I'm graduate in civil engineering, some years ago! but math, elementary-mid level math, is my great passion
yes one question, just 2 days ago with bounty of 100 rep :)
about the limit of sin(1+k^3)

10:15 PM
I hate engineers of every sort literally :D I have lots of them in my school too

well good to know!
why? if I can ask?

Hahah
I'll send a picture instead, wait a sec please

Anyway it is true I especially aswer the question, but that's a very nice way to verify your knowledge and learn trying to do your best to explain to someone else :)
a picture? of engineers?

This explains better why I hate them hahah

You are right! Fortunately I'm not a such kind of engineer!!! :)

10:28 PM
So you mean you didnt increase the curve level when you were in the college? :)
But dont count your departmental courses, we dont care what you do in your departmental courses :), just don't increase the curve level when you take our math courses as electives.

increase the curve level? Explain better please, as you see I don't even know what you are talking about

Oh sorry, I thought you knew it. Curve is the average point of the exam

ahhhhhh okkkkk :))

Now you kniw what I am talking about

so engineers increase the curve level!!! You correctly hate them :)

10:36 PM
What about you? Where you also a curve f*cker ? Haha
Were*
I bet you were

No we don't have curve level in Italy as I know and we didn't take courses with math students.

They are mostly electrical electronic engineering students actually

But why did you choose math if you, as you said, haven't been gifted by the necessary skills?

Good question

If you are here I suppose you love it.
I've found you here boun.academia.edu/LeylaAlkan :)

10:47 PM
The highschool I went was literally a bad one, and I was doing great there, and knew that I was perfect :) I was so hardworking back then, and I tried hard to get in the best university of Turkey, which is Bogazici, but at the first year in the math department, I realized that it wasnt maths that I have done back in highschool, it was something else but definitely not mathematics :)
Yeah that's me

ah ok, indeed from highschool to university things are very very different, maybe too much sometimes

Yeah and I haven't encountered with abstract mathematics untill I got in the university. And lots of lack of knowledge i had. I just tried to cope with until now.
And people in my university are mostly well-trained ones, so I can tell i have struggled enough

If you really feel to have done not the best choice you can change maybe.
Or are you going to finish soon?

Not now, please I'll be graduate soon :) but I think I ll learn from the start here in this community
So, are you working now?

Maybe you have too much criticism with yourself or you are very modest person :)
Yes I work! Even I know you can't belive that, since I spend many times here ;)
* a lot of
sorry for my english, it is not the best on chat

10:56 PM
Actually I am very proud of myself.

indeed MSE is also a good place to practice with english
That's very good!

Yeah definitely

Most important thing
that you are proud of yourself

And you know mathematicians are rationalists :) I know what is going on in my life well, so I am being rational :)

That's good!

10:59 PM
Yeah at least I tried hard to get in such a college that opened up the world to me. Here in Turkey most universities teach in Turkish, but only a few of them teach in English.
So enough of me :) In which area you are working?

So you want stay there but with an opened sight to the world...very good!

Actually I didn't say I want to stay here or not :) That's life, if better opportunities I get, I can go anywhere. Why not :)

I'm employed in a civil engineering firm, we are 80 people and work 50% in italy and 50% around the world.

So are you in Italy?
By the way is it late for you?

Yes! I've studied in Bologna, do you know?
For you is late there, maybe.
2 a.m.

11:06 PM
No, since you have no info in your bio :)
And since I am a student, i don't have issue with time hahah

I mean...do you know Bologna? :)
Ah ok...yes I remember, it's the best period of life :)

Hmm, no unfortunately

It's the oldest university in the world, or almost!

Wow
what was the name of it?

The University of Bologna (Italian: Università di Bologna, UNIBO), founded in 1088, is the oldest university in continuous operation, as well as one of the leading academic institutions in Italy and Europe. It is one of the most prestigious Italian universities, commonly ranking first in national rankings. It was the first place of study to use the term universitas for the corporations of students and masters, which came to define the institution located in Bologna, Italy. The University's crest carries the motto Alma mater studiorum and the date A.D. 1088, and it has about 85,500 students in its...
The fact that is the oldest doesn't guarantee that it is the best, indeed I think it isn't but Bologna is a very nice city, I enjoy a lot there

11:12 PM
That's great. You are a lucky one, then :)

But this room is public or private?

it's public hahah

opsssss :)
I'll delete my personal information ;)

You are no more anonymous :D
I am afraid you cannot :)

Never mind! :)

11:17 PM
It's been nice talking to you anyway :)
Even if you are an engineer hahah

For me too, even I thought it wasn't public ;)

Yeah I actually realised that

11:31 PM
But I guess rooms get frozen if they are not used for some time
I once talked to a teacher about a question, and that room doesn't exist anymore

Yes I've read about it now! that's good to know :)

Maybe you can email me at alknleyla@gmail.com ?
