@Mithrandir24601 You say "we", but noone else has opposed the original post listing. In fact, the listing post was first requested by heather. My preference would be to keep the original community wiki post, so that it could be easily updated if and when people post or answer the questions in the future.

7:10 AM
I come back from a conference and Blue's comments on Heather's "what's a qubit" answer are deleted, but Heather's (rather aggressive) replies to Blue are remaining. Now I get to the airport and Heather's comments are deleted too. Have Blue's comments been properly addressed?:

7:23 AM
@SLesslyTall The post was flagged for mod attention

7:36 AM
Some of the problem seemed to be that it was worded similar to a resource request, which should go on main but the real issue was exactly that - it was a compilation post and this is evidently something SE has had issues with in the past. Once all the questions and answers have been posted, if you then wrote the entire post with links, that would solve one of the problems (maintenance) and that might be enough to be OK but I wouldn't guarantee it.
These aren't problems specific to this site but it seems the problems arise after the post has been created
I could have just closed the question but once you add more questions on main the answer will become outdated so would need to be deleted, then the 'linking question' would automatically get deleted anyway

@Mithrandir24601 Sure, but that does not indicate that your solution is the consensus opinion

11:06 AM
@SLesslyTall You're right - it doesn't. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your opinion, I suppose), Stack Exchange doesn't operate on consensus opinion for everything - as an example, many people like community wikis and while a single community wiki post does no harm by itself, the wider effects of allowing them do cause some issues. This case is not too dissimilar from that. I really appreciate your enthusiasm in going through the questions though!

Q: Looking for work or talent?

meowzzIf you are looking for an opportunity in quantum computing, or are looking for quantum computing talent, please post an answer outlining specifically what you are looking for and/or what you are offering.

@meowzz Hi

@blue yo

@meowzz Your post got deleted by Robert it seems. Anyhow, I think it's better not be overly quick about this thing. It'll take some careful discussion

Firstly, such job advertisements should follow a certain format

Anonymous
I've spoken about it a bit, here

@blue i get that for the community. how would u suggest i go about getting a group together?

Anonymous
6:17 PM
@meowzz What type of group?

@Blue r&d

Anonymous
I can't suggest much unless you specify what your business plan is :P (and also why I should not think that it's fraudulent). In your meta answer, I didn't notice even any website mentioned for your company!

Anonymous
Imo, a website is the first thing you should make if you're planning to get a group together who'll be interested in working with you

indeed! i still am in the very early startup phase (hence co-founder opportunities)

Anonymous
Oh, and even before that, you'll have to disclose your real name and credentials for people to trust you! I'm not sure how you want to go about it.

6:23 PM
that's a 2 way street & mandatory problem to solve (cryptographically)!

Anonymous
@meowzz Indeed. Ideally, you wouldn't want to hire people whose credentials you do not know, either. Which is why I said, that we will have to carefully plan this among ourselves. It's going to take a considerable amount of time.

@Blue chat on keybase?

Anonymous
@meowzz If your need is immediate, I'm afraid that this isn't the right place for a job advertisement, as of yet. All you can do for now is add your contact details and a relevant message, on your QCSE profile page, so that people who visit it, will come to know about your job advertisement.

@meowzz As Robert mentioned in his comment of your deleted post, this is something that's very much not normally done, so please don't rush into things. We (mods) have had a very brief conversation with one of the CMs and while it's something that's allowed at the discretion of the relevant people, it's also something that very much an exception

6:28 PM
will update profile soon. i am interested in talking with u specifically @Blue

yeah, i was just going to mention that. the post needs some more community input, and then we can talk to the community managers about the issue.
i really like how excited you are about this (and i'm interested in your company goals) but unfortunately we have to plan carefully.

i wanted to make it a community wiki post but did not see the option

Anonymous
@meowzz I don't think I have any money to invest in a start-up, being just a student :P But sure, no harm in talking!

Anonymous
Good luck with your venture though

@heather ur another person i am specifically interested in talking to
im not looking for investors here. only talent!

6:31 PM
@meowzz how do you want to talk about it? i'm interested in what exactly your venture is trying to do =)

Anonymous
Yeah, same ^

Anonymous
What's your company's goal/aim?

This is the closest thing we've got (to my knowledge, apart from the whole jobs thing on SO) on the entire of SE to what you're proposing so there could be a fair few things to sort out first, especially as at the weekend there's much less activity, so the community hasn't properly been involved yet

i just learned about keybase & have setup a team there for interested parties
goal/aim: usher in the quantum era

rather broad goal there.

Anonymous
6:33 PM
@meowzz That's a bit too vague XD

what specifically are you going to do?
are you focused on experiment, simulation, theory...

I'm guessing that it's something to do with QKD/quantum crypto?

building a qc, writing algorithms for a qc, figuring out the structure of a quantum system (i.e., quantum os, or what have you)

indeed! i have a few different ideas at this point that i am actively working out. there is a whole industry that is in its infancy

Anonymous
@meowzz Btw, do you have any academic qualifications in this area (quantum computing)?

6:36 PM
exactly! qos (qloud), blo|ch>ain (qurrency), qhost = qc
no! i dropped out of uc davis (full ride double major math & philosophy)

my experience is mostly with startups (10+ yrs)

Anonymous
What were your previous startups in?

mostly tech & finance

Anonymous
Cool

6:41 PM
@Blue what do u think u want to do after school?

Anonymous
So what I basically wanted to say was that: perhaps fix a few particular ideas in your mind which you would want your company to focus on. A single company (at least a start-up) can't do software (algorithm research + programming + business software)+hardware (superconducting+photonic+blah blah blah) everything. So probably if you want people to trust you, firstly you'd need to come up with a focused business plan.

Anonymous
Also, maybe analyze whether you'll be able to make sufficient investments and raise enough funds to sustain the company in the long run. As it is, start-ups are extremely risky and over and above that it's a bit of a red flag that you're willing to anonymously hire anonymous people on a newly-started site. For the last point, first of all make a legitimate website.

Anonymous
Wanting to chat via keybase looks too shady (to say the least).

Anonymous
At least use LinkedIn or something!

Anonymous
@meowzz Probably grad school (after undergrad)

6:52 PM
@Blue will have updates for u soon (also never started i would anonymously hire anonymous people). also, all of ur questions are well founded, which is why id like to talk (more securely) to u specifically. i highly value ur skepticism & thoroughness!
stated*

so...is there a way to access "keybase" online? i don't have a smartphone, so i'm not sure i can converse using that medium.

@Blue Rigetti would disagree on the full stack development front (they look at everything from algorithms to hardware) but yeah, narrower and more focused would be a good idea

Anonymous
@heather Thank you. I'm very happy that you took it as constructive feedback rather than a personal attack on you. :)

i can start a slack channel?

Anonymous
@meowzz That'd be better (and a good idea)

Anonymous
6:54 PM
@Mithrandir24601 C'mon look at the people they hired initially! :P

@Blue And going by what I've been told, that's what matters - it's not just what you're doing but also who you are/employ that matters a lot when it comes to something like this kind of a startup

@Mithrandir24601 id like to specifically invite u as well (:

@Blue $24 million? Is that it? :P

Anonymous
A bit too less, right? ;)

@meowzz I'm in the middle of a PhD right now, so while I'm potentially interested in jobs, I should probably get that finished first! (thanks though, seriously ask in a couple of years)
@Blue Considering that they have >~100 employees now, it's not actually a lot

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 They've probably raised a lot more by now (I hope)

Anonymous
7:09 PM
It's really difficult to raise even 24$ million for a start-up

Anonymous
Unless you're super-rich already

rigetti raised 64m since 2016!? nice..

@Blue I mean, this is one of the more recent things that Bristol got, so as odd as it sounds, I'm now aware that a couple of tens of millions is barely enough :P but yeah, I'm sure they've got a lot more by now

hi-yo

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 Yes, that's possible for Bristol since it's not just one or two persons, isn't it?

7:14 PM
For rough figures, it would maybe cost ~£100k per PhD student and we get ~10 per year, so that's £5 million over the course of 5 years just in PhD students coming in (although, to be fair, the whole thing takes 8 years for all the cohorts to finish the PhDs)

Anonymous
A university like Bristol is very well funded already. However, if you just have a small group of people who simply have a PhD and nothing else, it's quite difficult to raise funding (by yourselves)...unless you're backed up

Anonymous
I don't know the exact history behind Rigetti though

Anonymous
On the other hand, if you are a Stanford or MIT professor you might be able to even raise more than half a billion dollars

Anonymous
for your start-up

@Blue It's weird - I've met a couple of people who finished their PhDs a couple of years back and set up a science incubator by themselves in Bristol (unit DX). They got millions for that, so yeah, it's really hard, but it's also really possible
(and when I say a couple, I mean literally two people)

Anonymous
7:20 PM
@Mithrandir24601 Possible maybe. I really don't have much idea beyond hearsay XD (Btw that makes me look forward to Bristol, even more, for myself :P)

I suppose one of Bristol's advantages is that they're really trying to push for more entrepreneurship in the city at the minute, so we've got things like QTIC and Unit DX in the hope that Bristol (as a city) goes up in the world of science companies

Anonymous
@Blue Gosh, you always write an extra "d"!

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 That's really good. We need many more entrepreneurs in these scientific areas

Anonymous
That'll in turn increase government funding for science as a whole

@Blue I'm sorry, I don't see any typos, what exactly are you referring to? ;)

@Blue oh, let me know if you want me to continue my rambling at some point

@Mithrandir24601 Unfortunately, India is still a long way behind (at least in the hardware aspects). I'd really love to return back (after grad school) and someday somehow try to popularize these technical fields in my country.

Anonymous
@Semiclassical Yes, of course! I was reading through your messages and also doing a bit of self-study. I'm currently involved in some other (read: boring) work, but I'll surely ping you sometime this week again. :P

@Blue Yeah, I've heard that :/ That would be a great thing to do if you could manage it but from what I've heard, doing stuff like that is really hard in India compared with the likes of Europe, America or China :/ It's a real shame because that's the sort of thing that could really pay off in a few decades

7:36 PM
kk

As an aside, I've got to admit, I'm impressed with the Chinese government - they're really going for the whole quantum technology thing and it's no half measure going from their efforts in QKD and getting as many researchers back in China as possible

How is the US climate for QC research?

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 The main advantage India and China have is their large youth population. If the funding can be settled and enough employment opportunities can be created, I think those two countries will be excellent places for mass production and research in quantum technologies.

My impression is that it's good but I dunno how to draw comparisons

I mean, that they're 'stealing' back researchers isn't very convenient for the rest of us but they seem to be doing a good job of it
@Semiclassical The US is the one I know least about :P

7:40 PM

@Mithrandir24601 Yup, China has progressed a lot!

Canada's going really well, the UK's going really well, China's going really well, USA is um, I've no idea - most of the research there seems to be done by already massive companies, although I gather there's a lot going on in silicon valley with the likes of Rigetti

@Blue The Swiss are owning QKD. Somehow I'm not surprised :P There's a fair effort in Vienna but I haven't heard much in the way of companies from the rest of Europe :/

@meowzz yeah slack works =)

7:43 PM
One thing I dunno much about is where the bottlenecks are right now

@Blue Although of course, the EU's just starting a monumental funding boost to quantum tech

e.g. to what extent the major obstacles are hardware vs. software

@Mithrandir24601 Ah, yes. ETH Zurich and Basel are nice places for QC research too

@Blue Many people are

@Mithrandir24601 Indeed, it's a growing field. I have been trying to collect some data regarding the QML guys in Europe (since that seems to be one area of QC which I'm particularly interested in). Who are the popular QML guys in UK btw?

google/IBM are making a lot of progress in the U.S. and isn't rigetti U.S. based too? and then there's research groups at U of maryland (?), MIT (Shor/Chuang), U of Austin (?, Aaronson), etc

7:51 PM
@Blue I'm the wrong person to ask this. It's not non-existent in Bristol, but there's not a huge amount of it either

Anonymous
Yeah :P

oh.
well then =P

@heather I was discounting them as they're big companies who are essentially funding themselves, so they don't really give a great insight into how the US as a country is looking at quantum technology
@heather Oh yeah, Chris Monroe at Maryland is making some impressive progress on ion traps

@Mithrandir24601 that's true. do you read shtetl-optimized?

whurley had posted a nice chart somewhere on this site

72 is quite a lot, lol....so that's sort of expected

But progress nevertheless

8:00 PM
@Blue Xanadu, yes. To be honest, my opinion on Xanadu is that they're one of the most promising. I heard a talk on how quantum computing with squeezed light will work and it was like hearing someone go "this isn't a problem. Nor is this. Or this. Actually this is really easy. We just need more squeezing" for about half an hour. Considering that every other method has so many potential issues, I feel that using squeezed light is very promising

Anonymous
Probably rtucci

Of course, they need to get that squeezing first, but it's one of those things that just seems to deal with all the potential issues that so many other things have
@Blue Yeah, I'd answer but 1. I'm moving flat in less than a week so really don't have the time to answer stuff and 2. I'm not even sure how I'd formulate the answer beyond "look, here's the gates and they form a universal gateset" which doesn't really seem to be quite what the OP wants

8:05 PM
@Mithrandir24601 of course I understand that not everything is up to consensus, but this doesn't seem to conform to any SE rule and rather is just your opinion on how to solve this. No other mod has backed this solution, so I kind of feel that you have just decided this personally rather than either enforce a SE rule or mod consensus

Anonymous
It's indeed a bit opinion based, I agree

Anonymous
@SLesslyTall I guess the problem was that the post was sounding more like a resource-request? Just a little re-framing will do

Anonymous
Just say something like: This thread is for keeping track of the N&C questions which have been answered

Anonymous
And in the answer section make the list

@SLesslyTall I'm sorry that it had to happen and my own opinion really is that it was fine. Unfortunately, it's not my opinion that matters on this one either. I made a judgement based on advice given in the mod flag and a (private) conversation with the person who made the flag
@Blue I don't think so. That didn't help, but that's also not the problem as I understood it
Well, it was clear that it being a resource request wasn't the problem, to be clear

Anonymous
8:12 PM
What was the problem then? I wasn't around the last couple of days

Anonymous
Anyhow, fwiw, that N&C exercise linking seemed like a good idea to me

@SLesslyTall i back mithrandir24601's decision.
generally, if a moderator takes an action, you can consider it as coming from the whole team.
there were also special circumstances here that were out of @Mithrandir24601's control. you're just gonna have to take this one on faith; i'm sorry.

Anonymous
@heather I'm trying to understand whether the problem was related to that particular post (quantumcomputing.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/252/…) or it is a general rule that such listings are not allowed?

@Blue Issues to do with how these posts are never well maintained in the long run/that it becomes a mess. It sets a bad precedent for the future. The first post was 'sufficient'. Part of the reason was that it read a bit like a resource request, yes. It's not a post about how the site works or a post asking to make an exception for some specific reason (that was the first post) - i.e. it's not something that should be on meta.
Reading through everything, there's a possibility that, if you finished the entire series first, then made a post about it on meta (not worded as a question etc. etc.) it might not be so bad but I can't guarantee this and it would be unlikely that this is the case

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 I see. It does make some sense. However, is that a general all-wide-SE-policy?

Anonymous
8:23 PM
Or only in this particular case you were instructed by a CM or something?

@Blue I don't know. I'd be inclined to not put any 'here is a list of questions for the sake of listing questions here' posts on meta, put it that way

Anonymous
@Mithrandir24601 I won't say I completely agree with it, however, since it doesn't concern me much, I wouldn't bother anyway

8:40 PM
@heather I am confused, what are the special circumstances here? Nobody has ever explained this, just stated that it's "out of my control", etc. I'm not trying to be obstinate, but I just don't understand why this solution is being pushed through?

...what's the background here?

Anonymous
The "out of control" part sounds a bit like some "top-secret" though XD

Q: Listing all Nielsen & Chuang exercises as a resource for future generations of QC students

SLesslyTallLike many quantum computation researchers, back when I was first learning the basics of the field, I relied heavily on Nielsen & Chuang's "Quantum computation and quantum information" textbook. However, one frustrating aspect of doing so was that no official set of solutions was ever released fo...

8:52 PM
@Blue Oh, I should probably edit that comment - I had a follow-on conversation about the mod-flag and now think that doing so on the original question wouldn't be OK and that the main issue isn't that it's worded as a resource request

Anonymous
Well, whoever raised the mod-flag surely gave a very convincing argument ;)

9:11 PM
side note: i'm still not 100% clear on what exactly the issue is here, but "this doesn't work on main" isn't really a reason to put it on meta
they generally fail for the exact same reasons they wouldn't be good on main
meta is there for some very specific reasons, and has specific purposes. it's not a catch-all for stuff that's sorta related to the site but doesn't fit on main.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir "this doesn't work on main" was surely not the motivation to post in meta, from the OP's perspective, as far as I can understand.

Anonymous
This is a great idea! I look forward to your posts. If you'd like, as you make the posts, you can make a new meta post listing each post for an easy reference. — heather ♦ Jun 20 at 16:14

Anonymous
@F.Siciliano I think a meta thread should be good enough for that purpose — Blue 2 days ago

These were probably more of a reason ^

I'd think a new self answer there on that original question would make more sense as a place to put the list, if you want it on site

shrugs okay
So, let me ask a couple questions, I'm still detangling the situation
What exactly is the purpose of the list?

Anonymous
@Mithrandir To keep a track of the exercises which have been solved/discussed on the site from that popular QC textbook.

Would a tag for that textbook make sense?
Are there any plans or suggestions for doing this with any other works?

Anonymous
9:27 PM
@Mithrandir Yes, I'd be okay with it. However, it would be a little more difficult to filter through (when you're looking for specific exercise), compared to a meta list.

Anonymous
@Mithrandir I can't think of any other. N&C is pretty much the most popular QC textbook, as of today

Anonymous
And that too, by a large margin

@meowzz i tried that and still haven't gotten a verification email =/

@Blue I think it would be easier if the question titles were worded in some particular way - it's easier to type in a search bar than scroll through a meta post

Would a note in the question body itself (This is part of a series of questions from the textbook "Nielsen & Chuang", as agreed upon on meta. This is Exercise whatever in the book.) be feasible?

Anonymous
9:32 PM
@Mithrandir24601 Yes, but no guarantees that people will keep that in check, especially in the long run. However, that would a good start, if we can follow it.

okay, got the email this time, one moment @meowzz

Would having a list in a tag wiki for the textbook be useful?

Anonymous
@Mithrandir I think that's already being done by @SLesslyTall

Anonymous
@Mithrandir That maybe possible, yes

Anonymous
But firstly the community and the mods have to decide whether they want such a tag in the first place.

9:35 PM
i am personally in favor of the nielsen-and-chuang tag; @mithrandir24601 and i discussed it a bit.

Basically, that's my opinion on the best way to do it. Start by creating a new tag, tagging the questions with it, add a disclaimer linking to the agreement on meta and to the tag wiki for the textbook in the question body, and maintain the list in the tag wiki.

@Blue This was one of the issues of having a meta post actually :P

@heather There are some immediate problems which we'll face. If you name it just "nielsen-and-chuang" people will use it even for posts which are non-exercise-questions, for example questions which simply contain a quotation from the textbook.

Maybe think of a better tag name (exercise-only)

@heather thanks

@Blue i think that's okay, actually.

@Blue probably yeah. My itnernet is not the best. I'm good too.

you can have a list of all the specific exercise questions in the tag wiki, but i think it's a general tag worth having.

@heather Doesn't that beat the whole purpose of us trying to separate out the exercise questions?

enjoy people

9:50 PM
@Blue I'd argue that you're broadening the scope of the exercise questions

@heather Okay, fair enough

@Mithrandir24601 I should have mentioned only "nielsen and chuang" exercises

Anyhow, go ahead

@Avantgarde Goodnight!

@Blue Sorry, as in using that tag for non-N&C exercise questions is broadening the scope of the idea of having those exercise questions, is what I meant

@Mithrandir24601 "as in using that tag for non-N&C exercise questions is broadening the scope of the idea of having those exercise questions" yes, that is true. However, I'm not clear on whether that is something you prefer or not.

@Blue Personally, I quite like it. Same question to you?

@Mithrandir24601 5 mins ago my answer would have been the latter, but now it is the former. ;) (the transition point was around ~2.5 mins ago for reasons unclear to me ;))

I processed heather's idea a bit, and I think it is good
