Bob
12:08 AM
@JoeyLópez rsync -v -h -z --progress --partial --port=12000 joey.su.floofyfox.com::files/Win10_1709_English_x64.iso .
could also replace --partial with --inplace
if it gets interrupted, just run it again and it should continue where it left off

ok I'll let that run

Bob
yea use inplace
rsync -v -h -z --progress --inplace --port=12000 joey.su.floofyfox.com::files/Win10_1709_English_x64.iso .
when it's done, you'll want to run a sha1sum over it and make sure it matches

just gave me details about the file
don't think it's downloading...?

Bob
yea I'm calculating the checksum on my end
1ad928cfef439f6aa4044ddc3a96b0b6830bdd0f /rsync/Win10_1709_English_x64.iso

Bob
12:10 AM
@JoeyLópez what does it say?
should be a progress percentage...

rsync -v -h -z --progress --inplace --port=12000 joey.su.floofyfox.com::files/Win10_1709_English_x64.iso
receiving file list ...
1 file to consider
-rw-r--r-- 4.70G 2018/02/26 18:47:06 Win10_1709_English_x64.iso

sent 24 bytes received 70 bytes 17.09 bytes/sec
total size is 4.70G speedup is 49,971,940.77
it returned to input

Bob
o.O
what OS are you running?
oh

Ubuntu 16.04.3

Bob
@JoeyLópez you missed the . at the end
that's a very important . :P
(it's the destination — . represents the current directory)

oh that was important... thought it was just ending sentence because people do that kind of weird stuff all the time

Bob
12:12 AM
yea, I tried to include it in the code block but that's not obvious in chat formatting

ok here we go

Bob
you could pass in an actual dir instead, like /foo/bar

idk how to do checksum stuff, though these days perhaps I should

Bob
@JoeyLópez sha1sum file.iso
just make sure it outputs 1ad928cfef439f6aa4044ddc3a96b0b6830bdd0f

oh... that's easy

Bob
12:14 AM
since the rsync server I set up is unauthenticated (didn't want to bother with ssh)
(and if you don't trust me, google for that checksum and you'll find it in win10 iso listings)

the max speed it's hit has been 1MB/s...

Bob
should take a little over an hour then

I'm guessing either you throttled the bandwidth to make sure your internet remained usable, or you're a long way from the east cost
or my internet is acting up again

Bob
@JoeyLópez erm... it's hosted on a server in Amsterdam

Bob
12:16 AM
I can chuck it on a Canadian server if that'd be faster

idk

Bob
but ... are you sure you're not mixing MegaBytes and Megabits? :P
~20Mbps is a max of ~2MB/s

16Mb/s is 2MB/s, right?

Bob
give or take, yea

I know my wifi is faster than 8Mb/s
internet*
the router, and supposedly the wifi

Bob
12:17 AM
I only picked the AMS one cause that was the most accessible
I don't have lxd installed on the CA one o.O
anyway, an hour is probably faster than setting this up

the bandwidth I'm supposed to have is either 200 or 250Mbps, and my laptop's wifi maxes at 150... so this is fun
oh it's staying above 1 MB/s now
that's good I guess

Bob
@JoeyLópez actually, if you want speed, UDR would be best
there's all sorts of ways to speed things up

UDR?

Bob
fancy stuff
but tbh it's probably not worth the trouble

yeah, I don't use rsync on a daily basis or anything
I'll just let that run for now

Bob
12:20 AM
I've used it before to push a <100kB/s rsync up to >5MB/s
it's great for Long Fat Networks like this one :P

huh

Bob
(i.e. plenty of bandwidth from both ends but TCP isn't optimal for long delays from crossing oceans)

yeah...

Bob
Hosted by XS4ALL Internet BV (Amsterdam) [16.92 km]: 3.748 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 1602.92 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed................................................................................................
Upload: 568.77 Mbit/s
yea uh... definition of LFN? :P

pretty much...
thought it wouldn't help to bring it up above 2MB/s or so, because I think Linux and Aetheros wifi don't cooperate, limiting my bandwidth to 16-20Mb/s

Bob
12:30 AM
@JoeyLópez if you want we can test your UDP bandwidth
apt install iperf

nah, maybe later
just gonna let it be for now

Bob
iperf -c joey.su.floofyfox.com -p 23223 -u -d -b 1000m

might do that in a bit, if it takes a long time

Bob
if that's significantly higher I can set up UDR
@JoeyLópez nah, it's about a minute

Bob
12:35 AM
If you're running it, there should be two "Transfer" entries. One for up, one for down.
also, if the rsync transfer gets interrupted, don't forget to resume it

the speed checking command isn't doing much
Oh, never mind, it was done- it just didn't show that it was accepting input
until I used Ctrl+C without shift

Bob
...hm. you don't seem to be able to receive UDP. probably some misconfig in a firewall somewhere.
or on my end. yea, probably not worth bothering with UDR

yeah

Bob
1:16 AM
@JoeyLópez how's it going?
there should be an ETA

it's at 26%
like 100kB/s...
5-10 hours eta

Bob
oof
uhm
@JoeyLópez Do you want to give UDR a shot? Or try downloading the ISO from the MS website again?

1:38 AM
Gonna try MS website from laptop and see how it goes

Bob
k

well the exe downloaded in seconds, and I have wine
should I run it or get the iso?

Bob
@JoeyLópez you need the iso
MCT doesn't work in WINE

oh
figures
so just copy it over once it downloads?

Bob
@JoeyLópez in this case you'd want to extract it to the flash drive
normally you'd install it properly but since we're doing an upgrade the drive doesn't need to be bootable

1:42 AM
oh ok
would just copying it over work?

Bob
@JoeyLópez you need to extract it
you want the contents

Bob
the ISO file itself isn't gonna do you much good

just asking

Bob
1:59 AM
@JoeyLópez basically you want to extract it (google, 7zip, mount, etc.) to the flash drive, go to windows, and run setup.exe
make sure you choose in-place upgrade and not clean install

of course
12 minutes left to download normally

Bob
2:16 AM
*12 minutes later~*

hey it just finished
folder should be named cccoma_x64fre_en-us_dv9 right...?
doesn't match iso name but whatever

Bob
@JoeyLópez uhh... you probably want the contents of that folder?
doesn't really matter as long as you have the setup :P

yeah that's the name of the folder that got mounted
I'm pulling the contents out

2:44 AM
ok copied over

Bob
@JoeyLópez reboot into windows, run the setup

just gotta swap drives real quick
so what now
just boot as if normal?
@Bob

Bob
3:06 AM
@JoeyLópez yea, just get into that narrator-cmd again

ok
what now

escape backtick in a comment to actually show the backtick, how do I do that?
I want to show rn for example
But where that's backtick "r" backtick "n".... should I ask meta?

I... what?
oh

3:22 AM
Sorry, I think I may have posted here thinking it was something else... Is this a room created for general troubleshooting or something created for something else. I may be wrong to post here

I think this was created off of my question, linked on the right there

Sorry about that Joey, I saw @Bob with you and the title troubleshooting and thought maybe he created it, etc. My bad.... I may post a meta question on this and be more clear if I cannot find anything with search on SU meta.

@bob how do I run it :|

Bob
@JoeyLópez cd /d to the drive it's on and run setup.exe

Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC and try running Windows 10 Setup again.

Bob
3:38 AM
...
urk.
hmmmmmm...
@JoeyLópez remind me which exact runas command you've tried, and what happens when you try?

runas /user:<my username> cmd

Bob
@JoeyLópez and the exact error?
actually. take a photo.

hold on

Bob
I want to see what kind of window it appears in.

the runas error?
cmd

Bob
3:41 AM
yea
@JoeyLópez does it ever prompt for a password?

yes

Bob
have you tried adding a new user using net user?

and it's freaking impossible to type anything due to window focus, I can sometimes get it to stabilize by keeping a steady stream of input
yes
attempting to start cmd as user "JOEYS-FLEX3\<main username>"...
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - cmd
5: Access is denied.

Bob
@JoeyLópez what happens when you add the new user?

it adds it but runas returns the exact same error
even if I type a user that doesn't exist it gives me that error

Bob
3:51 AM
... hmm.
soooo user login seems screwed

I have to go...

Bob
probably the same reason the login screen won't appear?

but yes indeed

Bob
psexec might get you out

I opened taskmgr to try to figure out what on earth is causing window focus blink, but I got nothing (and yes it opened, just as default profile)
syntax?
winlogon is running, as well as wininit
just in case you wanted to know that

Bob
3:56 AM
download that and extract the zip
(you can unplug the windows installer flash drive and download on the chromebook)
then run psexec -i -u <username> cmd
hopefully that'll get you in, but... ugh
depending on what exact point is broken...

this is a fine mess, isn't it?

Bob
@JoeyLópez could continue another day. or consider saving your data and reinstalling...
@JoeyLópez ayup. It's not quite broken in the right places for sfc/dism to fix, but it's broken enough that the sidegrade isn't working

oh hey, it's sysinternals. That's familiar.

Bob
@JoeyLópez you could also head into C:\$Windows.~BT and C:\$Windows.~WS and see if you can find the log files (setuperr.log, setupact.log)

I'd have to get back to linux, wouldn't I?

Bob
4:01 AM
Oh and look in C:\Windows\Panther\ for the same two files

Bob
@JoeyLópez you could probablymaybe do it from the cmd

what do I type for the command?
Can't scroll up on cmd for whatever reason
ahaha I'm stupid I closed winlogon.exe from taskmgr... closed all the windows (sight)
sigh*

Bob
@JoeyLópez you can right click on the title bar => properties => layout tab => increase screen buffer size (height)
@JoeyLópez dir and cd to explore in there ... or do it from linux
maybe leave it for another day - it's getting late over there, yea?

I mean for psexec
yeah...

Bob
4:05 AM
@JoeyLópez psexec -i -u <username> cmd

"over there" sounds like you're referring to another country... which I guess you could be
ok thanks

Bob
@JoeyLópez I'm in Sydney, AU :P

ah
yeah it's getting late over here

Bob
basically, the goal here is to try to figure out what exactly is broken that's blocking the upgrade setup, and try to get it to run

see this is why you're running at full mental capacity at 11pm... because it's not 11pm where you are
ok

Bob
4:06 AM
alternatively you could also ask over at sysnative.com/forums/windows-update — I've never been there personally but they seem to know what to do with a lot of these issues (corrupted system files, etc.)

Blocked on the Chromebook...
of course
DNS server not authoritative for zone.
uhh
oh I'm on C:\Windows\System32
PsExec could not start cmd: Access is denied.

Bob
sigh

Would backspacing a ton before typing my password affect anything? Because that's the only way I can get the window to accept my input for more than part of a second.

Bob
shouldn't be a prob
and didn't you create a new account with no password?

oh I can make it without a password? oops
ok let's try this just in case
still asked for a password
ok well I'm going to try again tomorrow...
thanks for the help

9 hours later…
1:39 PM
@JoeyLópez Windows reports max link speed, doesn't mean you can actually receive data at that speed... Hard drives write at 1,000-1,600Mb/s typically.
@Bob Sounds like something I need, but wtf is UDT?
@JoeyLópez He's in Australia, a long way from Anywhere(tm)
@JoeyLópez Linux and Atheros co-operate the best... Which is why most true Linux routers run Atheros.
@JoeyLópez I run at full mental capacity at 11pm regardless.
@Bob You should have asked for a photo (again). Sounds to me like setup would run, if anything would run
I mean it just sounds like executing anything doesn't work. For some reason. Yet running cmd does, maybe rename setup.exe to narrator >_>
Screw psexec. Setup has to UAC to Admin anyway

Bob
2:12 PM
@FMLCat A custom TCP-like protocol that's not TCP. Runs over UDP 'cause a new IP protocol wouldn't work on most routers. Unlike TCP, optimised for bulk data transfer over LFNs.
@FMLCat well, he was running as system, not aa normal (or admin) user... idk if setup works as system
idea was to runas/psexec into a more normal user first but apparently that's broken too

7 hours later…
9:11 PM
@FMLCat I can run taskmgr from cmd, and open cmd.exe from there (the title of the resulting cmd is no longer "narrator.exe"), I just can't seem to use runas... or the setup. Also, trying to run explorer.exe from the task manager will end in it closing before doing anything.
I guess it must just be a few specific Atheros chips that I heard don't (or didn't) work well with Linux?

1 hour later…
10:34 PM
oh also, I wasn't talking about windows' link speed. I believe that was reported at like 300Mb/s, but xfinity's speed test (what I was talking about) reported 150Mb/s on Windows.
@JourneymanGeek basically

11:07 PM
hold up...
might be a terrible idea, but would it be worth at least trying to add SYSTEM as an administrator?

11:23 PM
@JoeyLópez But that would make the maximum realistic speed of your wifi adapter to be about 220Mbps, not 150...
But anyway

11:46 PM
so... any ideas?
so SYSTEM can't be added to user groups
