Which is probably for the best. Stuff like election shenanigans should be left to the CMs

but current mods do have the ability to delete nominations IIRC

I dunno about that. I think only CMs can delete nominations directly. However, mods can cause nominations to become deleted by suspending the user.

I can't comment on that due to having private mod knowledge, but I will remind you that it is the general policy of SE to not talk about suspended users for the sake of Being Nice
