Hahahaha
That should be in the SQL Server KB notes.
Right after "Assume you use Microsoft SQL Server."

You guys hang up on me?

nope, but I'll call you back

you're the best

I just listened to Paul talk about cost based optimization while I cut out 36 4x4 felt squares. Made the whole process feel like it went by a lot faster.

1:54 AM
Which process, his talk or your cutting :X

Oh.
Well I guess it's funnier to leave the ambiguity.
🤣
If Paul suspends me, I assume that Taryn or Nick will come to my rescue now that they're here.

The harshest of burns.
Major props to Microsoft support (thanks Sean!) for getting us situated and staying very late to see it through. Also thanks to everyone who helps us get to the right people ASAP. It's much appreciated and we'll sleep better this weekend.
This week has been incredibly long due to countless issues. Many thanks to the support at Microsoft (Sean) for helping us work thru an odd issue. Also, I need to thank @Nick_Craver for hanging in there for the worst of it. Next week, will be fun with a DAG failover. https://twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/1119428146607083522
@SeanGallardy since you're not on Twitter, see nice things above.

12:10 PM
@SeanGallardy t-log and full backups all finished \o/

1:01 PM
Never mind, just saw this:
> For anyone curious, the cause and effect are both per-database. Our workaround after looking at the bug and symptoms was to: - Restore DBs to replicas - Setup an empty AG on replicas - Setup DAG to that AG - Join DBs to the AG in tandem: e.g. 1 on NY, then 1 in CO, 354 times

1:23 PM
@PaulWhite it was a slow fix :)

2:00 PM
@JoshDarnell Awww, thank you!
@Taryn Wooohooo! Thanks for working with me and being super cool :)

2:19 PM
so I see an average disk response time of 3 s in task manager
isn't that terrible?
resource monitor says 1 s

2:42 PM
@JoeObbish It's not bad if you're doing something super IO intensive and maxing bandwidth over IOPs

3:04 PM
maybe that's what I'm doing

Questions don't make sense today

Q: Best method of creating constant value

jmorenoI have a query with a hard coded value which is also hard coded into my application (which has a comment saying that the value should be the same as the value hard coded into the query). What would be considered the best way to make that value discoverable outside of the single query it is being...

Q: Configure CPU/IO affinity - SQL 2017 Standard

KrisIn our current system – we have 2 Sockets, 16 cores, 32 logical CPU. So, as i understand it is 2 cpu per core? And we are planning to buy sql standard licences for 8 core, i.e., 16 cpu. In this scenario, i want to restrict my sql server affinity and IO affinity values. How should i make my SQL se...

just today?

Especially today

that licensing question looks like he wants to break the rules, at least as I understand them
@ErikDarling I just answered one of them
u mad?

3:33 PM
I'm proud

thank you
my trick is to think like an OP

How do you think like your enemy?

that's one of the most important skills to master
so where'd you fly to?

Boston
Minneapolis Wednesday
Home next Wednesday

Customer on site thing

@JoeObbish That looks like a duplicate of dba.stackexchange.com/q/182824
I was happy to see my favourite reference for this survive, or at least recover from, the great MSDN blog disabling disaster.
For my money, your answer on the dupe is a lot better.

How much money?

Typical American

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME

@PaulWhite I made both answers as good as the questions

4:43 PM
Sounds like you never miss an OPportunity
2

simple question/requirement, simple answer
anyway, I acknowledge that I shouldn't have answered it

5:19 PM
@PaulWhite that is a good one

@JoeObbish why not? it's perfectly ok especially if you forgot about the other one

The thing I've been running into a lot is people using begin tran over many thousands of lines of code to be able to roll back all of it
I wish there were a better alternative

ADR?

Well in the future sure
For limited values of sure

Just have them implement "ctrl+z" on the application side.
How hard could it be.

5:45 PM
I always think stuff like that would be easier on the app side
But practically I have no idea how it would work

@PaulWhite well it's preferred to check for dups first
@ErikDarling not in my experience

preferred for sure

sometimes I shoot from the hip though
even faster than @SeanGallardy if you can believe that

You both have very narrow hips

I do? I've never been told that before

is that the sausage guy?

6:12 PM
aren't all guys sausage guys?

6:37 PM
@PaulWhite no I am strongly against sausage
it's made from the bits that otherwise wouldn't be eaten

it was an anatomical joke

7:01 PM
I got the sausage joke.

@PaulWhite it's 2019

not for me!
7:09
It's 20:09 in the UK
Some funky ten minute aligned time zone you have there

2 hours later…
8:51 PM
Scrapple is also delicious

1 hour later…
10:00 PM
You and I had two different scrapples
@JoeObbish I can believe it

10:36 PM
Mirroring... people still use it? Apparently so, even in SQL server 2016... I just can't...

1 hour later…
11:36 PM
Mirroring rules

@Forrest It's not much but I should be able to get you a spot in next year's SQL Saturday Madison

Yeah I can probably get you in NYC

madison is much cheaper than NYC
don't listen to that guy
