A: Should we close questions related to Sanskrit language and grammar as off-topic?

RickrossFrom this page: The Vedangas are the last treatises of the Vedic Literature. Paniniya Shiksha (41-42) narrates two verses on the importance of the Vedangas which describe Veda as a Purusha having six limbs as six Vedangas: Chandas are His two feet, Kalpa are His two arms, Jyotisha are ...

Very illuminating. Thanks bro.

There are innumerable words in Sanskrit, if everyone will start asking meaning/etymology for every single word then? And if grammar is also allowed then no point for Sanskrit.SE proposal.

I have to go with the community decision. There is a unanimous decision about closing language related questions as off-topic and it is being followed. This question has been posted a very long time ago and made an faq after the community approval. Allowing all the Sanskrit language related questions would make us a language site than a religious site. I remember you and Tamas also closing questions as off-topic!?
About mythological stories being on-topic, that is a totally different scenario. The stories are directly from our scriptures. They will be more apt here than Mythology & Folklore. This would not happen for Sanskrit questions. e.g this", "What is the English meaning of word " "What is the vibhakti for Rama shabda" are clearly Sanskrit language questions and not religious one. Moreover, the current policy is very clear. "but if a person is trying to understand the reason, meaning behind that verse/word, should be considered ON-topic".

Then we need new consesus. it should be discussed.

@Secret What if?-- To such questions there are no answers. It is unlikely too many questions will be asked on Vyakaran. Not many people are concerned about the subject nor many people understand it's importance. Since it is part of Hindu scriptures and since Hinduism is basically related to the scriptures, we have to allow them.
@Tamas There is no way i can stop such questions being asked. Because they are very part of Hindu scriptures. They are therefore clearly on-topic.
@Secret And if grammar is also allowed then no point for Sanskrit.SE proposa -- If mythology is allowed here no point for Mythology.SE is that what you mean? Also as u can see, Vyakaran is part of Vedanagas. So, what more left to discuss? Why u people trying to stop the subjects which are the very roots of Hinduism? Without knowledge of grammar and Nirukti the meanings that Hindu scriptures convey can not even be understood. So, they are not only part of Hinduism , they are fundamentally important too.

THat's why we need to reconsider all these things which handful of dudes decided.

@Tamas. That handful dudes is called community. And those handful dudes always take the decision. The decision which was took in the past is not taken by one or two persons. That is why it is called faq.
@Rickross You are just proving the point which Mr.Alien said in his answer. The recent revision you took makes it clear. The policy now is "Questions about Sanskrit will be allowed if it is about understanding a shoka". You are saying the same by adding the Purusha example. There could be many examples where the question is purely about grammar and not about Hinduism. Like "What is Guna Sandhi? ", "What is sambodhana prathama vibhakti?" etc., These are not related to religion and it is a language question. It becomes off-topic. Where as one asks "What is meaning of Purusha in this context' 1

@Sarvabhouma 1 question with 10 votes + 1 answer = 11 guys is community?

.. Purusha example is given to show how etymology is important There is one user who is even trying to stop such Qs being asked too. That's why highlighted with the Purusha example.. As regards Vyakarana there is nothing to discuss since it is a Hindu scripture therefore it is part of Hinduism. @Sarvabhouma
@Tamas. LOL but that's how it is here.. So, if 10 people or more thinks that a wrong is right, it will be considered a right here. Anyways, nothing much to discuss here right?

and gives a veda mantra or a shloka to understand it is on-topic. This is the policy we have followed since this post was made and I think it will be followed in the future too. If the question is about understanding a scripture or a mantra or a shloka" then it is on-topic the question should be clear indicating this one. But there would be some questions if everyting is off-topic "What is the meaning of X", "What is the masculine declension of the word rAma" etc., are not about religion. They are off-topic. So, I think there is nothing much to discuss or change the policy now. 2.

Also, @Tamas. u'll find that some people are always for "CLose this, Close that, Not allowed here etc.... Hinduism is for the broadminded, it encompasses everything. And here some users are trying to say that a subject, that is included in Hindu scriptures, is not part of Hinduism! How sad it is?

@Rickross We will make new consensus when will have sufficient people. 12 people are not community.

There are innumerable words in Sanskrit-- Yes, similarly there are numerous characters in the scriptures too. What if people start asking Qs for each of them like " Who is the father/brother/sister/mother ete etc of whom?" What to do with those then? Close them all? Also why more Qs is even a problem? Less number of Qs is in fact a problem for the site's health. @Secret

@Rickross 1. "If mythology is allowed here no point for Mythology.SE is that what you mean?" In our site myth is limited to Hinduism and in Myth.SE, any religious myth is ontopic. It's not same as "if grammar is also allowed then no point for Sanskrit.SE proposal." bcz here also Sanskrit grammar and Sanskrit.SE is also proposed for same thing. Objective of both will b same. 2. I'm not stopping anyone, instead I asked ppl to write answer here so that it will clarify whether Sanskrit is ontopic or not.
3. Help tour should be made clear like "Sanskrit related questions are also ontopic" so that visitors/others can see and post qsnts. and 4. Less answer ratio is also not good for site's health.
Btw, if Sanskrit is allowed then it is plus point for me.

@Secret See if something is part of Hindu scriptures then it is already included in Hinduism. So, what more we have to discuss here? Vyakarana, Nirukti are Hindu scriptures, so questions on these topics are clearly on-topic.
4. Less answer ratio is also not good for site's health.-- You are assuming that such Qs will go unanswered. But based on that apprehension one can not stop questions being asked. Anyways, we will see what happens. We should incorporate more and reject less. That's how the site will be enriched with quality content. @Secret
"What is the definition of the word Shudra?" OR "How the word is derived in scriptures?" are excellent questions. Because from answers we can know the deeper meanings associated with the word etymologically. It is not just enough to know that it means a low caste person or the 4th caste person. That is just a superficial meaning. @Secret

@Rickross Ok ji :P
I said Sanskrit is advantageous to me. I was wanted someone to post an answer here.

@Secret Ok bye for now, if we get Qs of that nature in future we will have more discussions BTW are u krishnasetha?
@Secret Yes that's why i posted an answer.

Today itself I was posting one Sanskrit question but while posting I understood the meaning so I didn't asked :D
@Rickross Yeah :-)
