I feel that what you're saying could be easily solved with banning the troublemakers - which was done. Why freeze the room? — Gallifreyan May 12 '17 at 10:10
@Gallifreyan Because rightly or wrongly, Mos Eisley picked up a reputation for being a room for troublemakers. It's continued existence, again rightly or wrongly, led weight to the idea that the behaviour the room was known for was becoming more acceptable. It isn't acceptable, and therefore the room has been frozen, as much to be mad an example of as to solve the continued issues that the mods were facing. — Dr R Dizzle May 12 '17 at 10:25
I expanded the comments :p

in Room for terdon to explain himself, May 16 '17 at 9:26, by terdon
No defense there. You're absolutely right, that sort of thing would not be acceptable today. That, again, was not the case then. The rule at the time was that directing profanity at someone else in the room is not acceptable, but it's OKish to do so for a third person.
pff damn
@TylerH I'm not sure why people are treating "smurf" as if it's an insult, tbh. It's a common term for mods used around SFF and M&TV chat (in reference to the fact that mods have blue names in chat), often used affectionately or by mods themselves. — Rand al'Thor ♦ Jul 6 '17 at 23:40
lol sounds offensive to me :D
Just to clarify a point on the "freedom of speech" bits: the goal of Stack Exchange is explicitly to empower people to collect accurate and useful information on various topics, with each site dedicated to a specific field of learning; we encourage freedom of speech only so far as it works toward those ends. Individual groups are both empowered and encouraged to limit speech when it becomes counter-productive to that goal. — Shog9 ♦ May 12 '17 at 16:34
hello btw :p
idk if he gets notificaitons from quoted comments but I suspect yes definitely not, that'd be crazy noisy
@Hakase don't believe so
@Hakase lol, that's a new name i can use. i generally use Blues
I guess be advised that the impression some people get is denigrating :p
so I've read a bunch from all that drama
what I've seen is there have been specific users who kept causing trouble in chat
and their bans were not long enough to prevent them from coming back again and resuming the bad things
somehow the other users(who? "the room itself"? :p) also kept on being bad
and then the room got closed
so it was specific users after all
it wasn't "the culture of the room"
that "culture" is defined by the users in it
but sho9 said some metaphor about tomato blight and how the entire room needs to be frozen over and be dead for a while
I guess you could accomplish that by dispersing the bad users for an extended period of time, long enough for a fresh good "room culture" to be born
and then they wouldn't be able to reintegrate into it, kinda
like the new crop wouldn't be tomatoes anymore, so the tomato blight wouldn't be able to affect it?
grow some bell peppers in there?
anyway, I think they've identified the problem with users and it's them that should have been removed from the room, not the room removed from the site
I'll consider this investigation completed :)

Q: What's the song that starts playing at around 20:22 in Episode 4, Season 3 of My Hero Academia?

Blackdrakon30I just really want to know since I'm loving the song. I'm pretty sure that it starts around 20:22, when Deku starts up his 1,000,000% punch against Muscular. I've been searching around but I can't find it anywhere.

01:28
wow, that was a useless flag
why is pointing out that a character is a trap a bad thing?
i'm one dungeon/area off from completing Norma's Character Quest in Tales of Legendia. Chloe's should be next so i'm hoping for moments between her and Elsa, maybe even Chloe realizing that she like Elsa more than crashing over Senel
Flags aren't toys, people. Maybe it was a mis-click, but even then it's a mis-click that inconveniences people across the whole Network. Try to be careful, please.
(And if not a mis-click, there's a distressing lack of words being used to deal with whatever's wrong before a flag's thrown.)
01:44
@nitsua60 wow, how many flags did that get? i generally start popping into other rooms when there's a bunch of flags already showing up
@Memor-X wait. what happened
@ASCII-only @EarlGrey reply to me when i what an image saying "a trap, apparently" was flagged
@Rashida :| but is there a better word for that? i thought "trap" was an anime-specific thing
@Rashida second point is invalid because it was not pornography, both people were clothed in chinese dresses
02:00
@Rashida yes...? it's almost certainly nsfw though
@Rashida oh i see. there is an erection tag. thanks for pointing that out but next time it would be better to flag the correct post
@Rashida or copying the greeting used in Japanese Maid Cafes?
and mind you, both Maid and Butler Cafes use the same greeting gender wide
@Rashida aren't you being a bit offensive to japanese people by calling them sexists and transphobic?
anyway, not interested in having that argument
@JNat could you remove this post, thanks

Hey folks, just a heads up: "trap" is an offensive term for trans people. Please do not use it; it's not consistent with the Be Nice policy.

@Cascabel well then i apologies in advance to anyone i've offended simply for the fact of not knowing if a person even considers themself transgender
It's not okay whether or not there's someone trans around, but thank you.

Q: What is the name of an anime that has a black haired boy who is being hunted down by unknown people?

Jack aylaHe is the main character and is the son of an okonomiyaki shop owner. He goes to high school with a white haired boy with glasses, a pink haired twin tailed girl and a teacher that end up protecting him later on. There is a black haired boy with a hat and an eyepatch I believe who is the one hunt...

things are quiet, almost as if everyone is out enjoying golden week
05:41
ok, first of all, I never hate transgender people. I considered @Ave and @Morwenn and whoever transgender people here as a friend and I never have problem with them irl. Chat room policy changed, ok that's fine. But look, we know, where we should draw the line, we don't post NSFW stuff, I'm really happy with that, I'm really happy with the way user here behave.
But we are anime and manga community. We like anime pictures, ok? So before there's one loli picture (is term is offensive now? I don't know) Totally SFW in my opinion. And it got flagged. That's.. I don't know how to say it. If Logan were here he'll know the better word.
And then, there's another flag for the word trap. Seriously, I don't know if this is offensive for transgender people and tbh, I don't care. This term is widely use in anime community ( and you know what? we are one ) . We don't dissed them, trap. We like them. Ruka Urushibara, Saika Totsuka, Hideyoshi Kinoshita, Hato Kenjirou. Whether you like it or not, they're widely known, as trap.
My problem is not it's offensive to transgender. But rather the way this room progressing. First, we have a totally SFW picture - by our standard - got flagged, and removed. Then a widely used term in anime community got flagged. And that last really, really nice trap picture? you guys decided to removed it. As an artist myself, I can't stand it. I don't know what's next but I can be damn sure I won't like it either.
@EarlGrey well with the image it is tagged with erection which might explain where the girl's hand. i'd accept that
@EarlGrey wait, seriously? you're going to leave?

@Memor-X Sorry, I was having lunch with friend and didn't reply earlier. Working on some pet project to put on GitHub to show employers eye can program.
@Gao aren't you hired as a programmer now?
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X Yea, kind of. My job title on the notice of employment is something like "progammer".
and the delay was fine. just like to talk to someone now about something other than the crap happening on SO now
@Gao so why do you need to show off you can program? or is this some optimized process you've made and proposing?
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X Coz programmers are expected to have a portfolio to present to potential employers. I'm preparing for my future, eminent job hopping.
06:13
@Gao ahhhhhh. you don't have your own website? or do you just use GitHub?
@Memor-X GitHub is an easy, free way to create a portfolio :P
@Memor-X also GitHub Pages is a thing, you don't need a website at all unless you need some database black magic for whatever reason
Gao
Gao
@Memor-X I had a handcrafted but unfinished personal website (no js and not online), which looks pretty plain but I like it over engineered websites.

@Memor-X but GitHub doesn't put restrictions on what can be on your website?
@ASCII-only but you have to accept everything don't you?
06:23
@Memor-X accept what
@ASCII-only how about branching? (to be honest i havb't used GitHub so i don't know all the features)
@Memor-X why do you need branching for a website >_>. also what about branching exactly
Gao
Gao
@Unihedron Despite Joel hiring the smartest people, all-star teams don't always excel. Just look at the new FogBugz a.k.a. Manuscript. The website is all marketing speech and failed miserably at communicating.
@ASCII-only no i mean on Github you can branch but what if i don't want people to branch my code?
@Memor-X private repositories are a thing... (want unlimited private repos for free? then use BitBucket) plus if you want people to see it you can't avoid that...
Gao
Gao
06:25
@Memor-X Don't put it on Github then. Close source it, or at least write it into the license and hope people follow it.
@Gao Such is life. Sometimes you have the best odds but the random number generator doesn't favour you.
However, SE chat has existed for long enough that it's obvious, to me at least, that they have no intentions of building good communities, the entire concept of SE makes it so that the more distinct their users are, the better it would work.
The mere fact that they kept their broken message flagging system through out all of history is a tell.
@JNat and @Dimitrimx before you follow up my request with the offending image i want to know your opinion on if it should be removed/not have been posted in the first place given that the complaining user never flagged the image when they should have if it's so bad
like maybe i was too quick in hoping to avoid a flood of users who will go though everything here just to look for a reason to unfairly shut us down, especially now with those blog and Meta posts going around

i.sstatic.net/5R3DI.png what's the translation of the japanese?
@Memor-X The policy in here has always been that if it offends someone, we remove it :)
@僕の彼女 Is it even japanese :0
the role thingy
07:42
@Memor-X let's not use the word :) If people come in here, and are put off by the term, we should avoid using it. It does offend transgender people, regardless of whether or not that's your intention when using it
Actually, it rarely does, and I'm fairly sure we all know that. Transgender people being different naturally have tendencies to be more open minded since they have to communicate their perspective to people who don't understand them yet. Conversely, patients diagonosed with obsessive compulsive personality disorder finds OCPD jokes offensive, which SE likely won't do anything about, because it's not relevant to the heat of the discussion.
Whether it's actually offensive isn't a point worth debating when it's not going to change the outcome of the discussion.
*likely finds
@Unihedron I'd invite you to read this, in particular the "Defamatory language" section :)
As for the OCPD bit — not sure what point you're trying to make
That's like saying the term "oriental" is deflamatory...
@JNat I can understand that 'trap' can be considered offensive. It is however a accepted terminology used in a sub culture full of offensive terminology. Are we going to break down on all of that?
07:50
@Unihedron Don't see how, really. Furthermore, I hope you noticed I'm not linking to a reddit post, but to a page from the GLAAD site
I am also assuming that this is not limited to the chat as well.
I'm not sure what either reddit or GLADD is, but I opened your site and I'm filling in this form that it gives me.
@Dimitrimx we're not trying to change the anime/manga industry in this chat room, if that's what you're asking. But if someone pops in and is put off or offended by some of that language, we should just edit/delete the bit in question, and move on with the conversation
@Unihedron form? huh?
Oh, I thought it was a registration pane, it asked me to donate.
07:54
Hm, mixed feelings on that approach. But ok.
@Unihedron ?
@ASCII-only I thought it wasn't japanese since it looked very chinese
turns out the word was in both
so I stand corrected severely :D
@Unihedron well, both Japanese and Korean do use Chinese characters
I don't mean that
you don't see complicated radicals like in classical chinese often in korean and japanese, don't you?
@Dimitrimx you can always rely on the other mods in the TL for guidance, if you feel your mixed feelings might get in the way :)
08:01
user image
2
@JNat will do ^^
@Unihedron Korean more or less stopped using Chinese characters, from my observation
@Memor-X the issue there was continued behavior, despite of multiple attempts to discourage it. And closing the room did have an effect: the community eventually created a new one, but the tone and atmosphere is drastically different (read: non-toxic). cc @Hakase
In Japanese, daily life usage revolves around 2000+ characters, but other characters are still in use
Though an average person who graduated from high school wouldn't know more than the 2000+ frequently used one
08:13
In Japan, or worldwide? :P
Yeah, I mean an average Japanese studying in Japan
In everyday conversation really only around hundreds are used, but supposedly japanese schools teaches 2136 common kanjis (常用漢字), where as in hong kong (where I live) we have 4762 common chinese characters based on the Hong Kong Chinese Lexical Lists for Primary Learning (香港小學學習字詞表)
those 2136 characters are definitely just a small part of them all though
finally finished reading that GLAAD page. at least it wasn't as long as shog's extended theory of moderation
@Unihedron I'd really like to see a source for "hundreds", not that I doubt the number, but just for scientific curiosity
I have the same feeling when I listen to those event video
08:21
I don't have a source, it's a gut feeling, you could even say I made it up, because that's basically what it is
Even though they speak really fast, I can pick up most of what they are saying, since they are using basically the few common words
Anonymous
@Unihedron 4208 characters cover 99.9% of Japanese: kanjibunka.com/kanji-faq/old-faq/q0006
I probably use more kanji-based words playing mahjong for an hour compared to chatting for a day...
Anonymous
I think to be literate in Japanese you end up learning to read around 3500 or so, give or take depending on the person. There's no exact number, of course.
Anonymous
Like how in any language you're likely to keep learning new words for the rest of your life.
08:26
@snailboat This is interesting. I learned about the pareto rule from vsauce, where 80% of effects are caused by 20% of the sources, and this seems to line up with that phenomenon well
@snailboat Is there similar study on spoken Japanese?
@Cascabel actually the trans community doesn't always agree on that point: IME everybody agress that it could be seen as an offensive term, yet I've seldom seen any trans folk feeling offended by the term. I've also seen it reappropriated by a huge number of trans folk.
I even joke about potentitally being one on a regular basis
relevant: message/44323215
And non-trans people who use it hardly ever use it in a negative way either v0v
@Unihedron thanks, I didn't feel like reading the whole conversation :p
I was actually just surprised that such a message would be pinned
equally surprised
when I opened the chat, I saw top pin being garbage, surprised, then I read the two other pins and became more disappointed than surprised
well, no point lamenting over what I'm no business of, so let's leave it at that
08:40
@Unihedron Calling a message about moderation "garbage" isn't exactly constructive...
@Mithrandir I'm not exactly the most constructive person, and if you know how to word it better, please enlighten me.
I say this because my knowledge of the definition for "tr◯p" is quite specific and not what this other page claims it to be, so without that context, it just looked like a misguided decision.
3
@Unihedron If you don't have a way to say something constructively it's often best not to say anything at all.
08:43
@Mithrandir Then I'm going to give you the cold shoulder treatment, and I hope you will understand, since you offered.
lol, at least they were polite and said it "was not constructive" - they probably agreed with me, so they couldn't just say I was wrong

While the regulars of the room were not offended by the use of that word when it was used in the last couple years or so, someone was offended enough to flag it, and that's understandable due to the negative connotations the word has. I think that instead of fighting against the mods etc here, we should sit down and think a bit about how we can continue the existence of maid cafe while maintaining a friendly and welcoming environment here.

that's the short version of the message.

@Gallifreyan I didn't read everything yet, but from what I can see, someone posted a drawing, someone called the character in the drawing a "trap", and someone flagged that, then a discussion about "this is okay" and "this is not okay" happened.
(also fwiw I agree that the word is offensive, but it has a place in anime community and I don't think that I can change that, so instead of talking positively or negatively about the content, I just don't talk about it)

@Memor-X regardless of the tag... the erection was there — we wanna avoid similar images, for sure
@Dimitrimx i think we have a question on who was the first trap, if we are to edit it out i would strongly suggest a closely linked term otherwise you're altering the question to something it's not
@JNat fair enough.
I've already been looking around for ways to rephrase that. I keep landing on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otokonoko However I don't think this covers 'trap' as Otokonoko relates more to crossdressers.

If you have suggestions, feel free to voice them. We probably should make a meta from it then though/
@JNat oh i was aware it was continued behavior but wasn't sure what was the straw-flagpole that broke Shog's back. i have a faint recollection that it was an tasteless debate on rape in Starship Troopers but wasn't sure and didn't was to assume it was

@僕の彼女 you could bounty it for more attension lol

Unless we can find another closely related term, I am against changing 'trap' in questions/answers. Considering it is fandom related terminology.
