also might be good to add in how to answer id requests. alot of the new users i see who answer them just post a title when really they should explain how it matches

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ Things like this are why I don't really like the crowdfunding trend.

Investors are generally pretty knowledgeable and diligent. They know what to look for before they give out money, and don't do it randomly.

That's been replaced by marketing unfinished products to ignorant people who don't really know what they're doing but feel like giving money. It's easy to mislead mobs either through deception or incompetence, and there's probably a bit of both here.

There's nothing forcing the creators to make a really good work, and little encouraging them to do so if they've already pocketed a good profit before it's even finished.

IMO if someone wants to make something legitimately good, they should have no problem funding it through traditional means. So I don't really trust these efforts most of the time.

@Matt Let me see if I can articulate my opinions on this better, since it's something I've thought about a great deal recently.

My opinion is that the point of all modern fiction (regardless of medium) is to create interesting characters. Other aspects of the work are generally meaningless.

For instance, "story" basically just consists of taking a handful of overused plot points, stringing them together in some arbitrary order, and calling it a wrap.

Every possible combination has already been tried, and there's no room for innovation or optimization any more. All the good ideas have already happened, and doing anything "new" or "novel" is a sure way to ruin an otherwise fine work. When people say "X has a good story" what they really mean (if they thought about it more) is that X has good characters who aren't ruined by an intrusive story.

The reason why characters are different is because there's an added degree of complexity because characters can interact with other characters. This opens up a much larger parameter space which has not been explored or optimized nearly as completely. There's still room for interesting new innovation.

Gameplay is very much in the same boat as story here. In the end, it's really just work pushing buttons. It's work I'll do if I need to because the characters are worth it, but at best it's a wash. You push the same buttons in every game; there's nothing really new or innovative. It is possible in rare cases for a character's personality to be expressed better through gameplay, since it is interactive, but this isn't the norm at all.

Ideally, gameplay should let you create interactions between characters. That possibility is why I feel like games ought to be a great medium, but few take advantage of it. This is rather silly considering I can already have a similar experience IRL, with much better controls. Somehow game developers expect that the simple act of pushing buttons itself will somehow be amusing, but that's what I do at work already, and it isn't particularly fun.

Where gameplay isn't the top priority, other unimportant things like graphics even come before characters. It's still considered acceptable to have NPCs with one single line of dialogue and no other possible interactions, in which case you might as well replace them with signs.

More or less, my criticism is that games seem to have not realized any of this.

Incidentally, while a good character is not necessarily always cute, that's the only reliable well-studied method which I'm aware of for creating good characters. Cute girls are very stable. You can change many things and they'll stay good characters. They're basically never not good characters.

Other types of character are much more specific in the details, and few works get these right reliably. When they do it's fine, but there's enough remaining parameter space with just cute girls left to explore that studying these sporadic good characters just isn't worth it. Indeed, this case is so uncommon and strange that you wouldn't miss much if you ignore it completely.

That's the one thing I think anime and manga do really well compared to other media. If games were like that I'd be very happy with them, but I just can't stand the vast majority of games these days.
