I can't remember the last time I've heard good news for Funimation, but bad news seems to be coming out once a week or more now.
First they had the SnK theater subtitle fiasco, and now their Prison School dubs are getting flack for including a rather obscure reference that is somewhat controversial and doesn't even make much sense in context.
Personally I don't really understand the reference at all, even after looking into it for a while. I can't fathom how they thought this was a good cultural equivalent for the original line.
the only problem I really have that it was essentially adding something stupid in reference to something that was relevant for 3 days to an adaptation of which source material far pre-dates the irrelevant event
just unprofessional even though it's a dub, but then again nobody really watches dubs...
Basically my thoughts as well, and it didn't help that the reference was to something many viewers (including fans of the source material) wouldn't understand
As for no one watching dubs, I don't think that's entirely true. It's probably true that no one would have watched this dub, but apparently there is some sort of dub fanbase out there somewhere.
Honestly, the voice acting criticism is a bit silly. It's true that English voice acting is less competitive (and thus generally less skilled) than in other languages, but that's hardly the biggest problem with dubs.
If we reach a point where the only way to get anime in English is by streaming versions with exclusive licenses, there'll be nothing forcing companies to do even a decent job translating, and we might end up with stuff like this.
Subs and dubs have different requirements. Subs have to fit on 1-2 lines of the screen, regardless of how complex, and have to be visible for enough time to be read. Dubs, on the other hand, have to match the character's manner of speaking and the original line more closely.
but if companies do just get lazy, they might default to one translation, and the dub would probably be the one they'd pick
(at least if the show is profitable enough to merit a dub at all, which I'm surprised Prison School is)
