7:30 AM
haha I am not sure marking exams online is more real than AU but the monetary renumeration comes in useful when you want to buy groceries

What tool do you use for that?

a really awful Java applet that I have to use minor hackery to make work in Firefox

Q: How can I use Pearson's ePEN java applet on Ubuntu?

ZannaI mark exams for Pearson online using a Java applet called e-PEN on this site. The 'minimum system requirements' state that only Vista or later Windows, and Internet Explorer 9 or later, are supported. I am using Ubuntu 16.04 and I believe that the correct interpretation of 'minimum system requi...

fortunately I have documented my efforts. Every exam season I just read my own answer haha

We use this tool called Gradescope

oooh you mark exams too?

I was a teaching assistant last quarter. :)

7:35 AM
that's awesome
I love TA-ing

Even me :p

I applied for a TA job a few months back, but I didn't get it because they said I lacked experience in a school environment. Fair enough
Still haven't got a real job here :/

I applied as a TA for a newly introduced subject, so I got it easily (I think)

well, this was in a primary school
(ie kids aged 4-11)

Ah.
Mine was Graduate Networked Systems

7:49 AM
sounds cool
have you had fun?

Yup, lots

:D
yay
hurray for fun work

\o/

After the frantic exam marking period, I'm getting a fair bit of enjoyment out of no-work tbh
but I should definitely look for something to do over the summer even if it's voluntary

Yup, it's always better to keep ourselves occupied during summer.
Summer's always been my productive time

7:59 AM
Summer here is holiday time for schools and teachers and people with kids. It's the only time of year when the weather is sometimes pleasant haha
I need to install the new version of Ubuntu today
not looking forward to this :/

Ubuntu 12.10 FTW

:D
I might have to make installation media on another device because my disk is so full I don't have enough space to repack the iso

12.10 was the first LTS I used... I had used the 9.04 once.

12.10 wasn't LTS
even numbered year April releases are LTS. All odd-numbered year and all October releases are non-LTS

Err, then I've forgotten :(
Ohh, then 12.04 was LTS?

8:03 AM
yes

Ah, then that.
Oh, I never realized that even numbered .04 releases were LTS :D

it only went out of support last year (or was it this year? my sense of time is awful)

Just been downloading and using

I was completely clueless about the versioning system for my first 18 months or so of using Ubuntu haha but eventually you catch on to these things hanging out on AU

I like linux. It's more easier to use as a programmer.

8:07 AM
probably Windows folk are comfortable with everything they need to do, but I find it frustrating to use Windows at all now I'm used to Linux because you can't just open a terminal when you want to sort things out, it keeps doing annoying things you haven't asked it to do and so on haha

lol, true.
I've been using mac for the past few months to test it out... I now like linux even more.

What I dislike about every Apple product is the arrogance it projects
You Will Use This The Way We Want You To
also function is always less important than style
mouse design... ffs
they are all about prestige and profit
screw that!
Linux is the commons! :)
hmm this flash drive seems damaged sigh

But the number of bugs and crashes are relatively low... (still doesn't make me like it :p)

oh yeah, it "just works" haha
you just can't do that much with it

lol, true

8:20 AM
I have worked with lots of rich kids over the years doing private tuition and so a lot of the families have macs... I like that I can open a terminal and get a bash shell and have a bit of fun with a student making it do arithmetic haha

I bought the last piece of 2016 version for 1149USD.. The others were all 1600+

O.O
holy crap

8:45 AM
I rebooted too
to see if my laptop would suddenly recognise anything being plugged into its USB ports again... no dice!

8:56 AM
wow, idk how to deal with this problem :(
