@EliahKagan it's set to a newline?
(P.S., it's not so much that I know sed well, it's more that I don't know anything else at all XD)
@EliahKagan I didn't find any other instances of it

which is a symlink to a symlink to the same thing as update-grub
which is a stub for, what's that command? looks abuses command substitution
$ cat $(readlink -e $(which update-grub))
#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"

I woulnd't say this is an abuse of command substitution.
I would say it feels like there are quotes missing. :)
Also, why are you using readlink?
$ cat "$(command -v update-grub)"
#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"
(You could also use which in place of that command -v.)

$ cat "$(type -P update-grub)"
#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"
that's what I wanted
@EliahKagan because I learned that first!

type -P is better, in bash. Yeah.
@Zanna But readlink is redundant there. It can just be omitted without any further changes.
$ cat $(which update-grub)
#!/bin/sh
set -e
exec grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg "$@"
(I've only omitted the quotes around $( ) to facilitate easier comparison.)

hahaha
if you read a symlink, you just read the file it points to, duh

12:56 PM
Yeah, operations that use the content of a file will dereference symlinks automatically.

it's very rare that I actually know what I know at the time when it's useful
gotta go to work :(

@Zanna Yeah, the only goto to it is under case 'e'.
Sorry I wasn't clear. I just meant we should look at the place that transfers control to that label (rather than getting there by passing through it "naturally," as the code we've been looking it so far does).
@Zanna Huh?
(Feel free not to answer. I know you have to go now.)

I mean, I know some things (like about symlinks), but I usually forget to connect them to the things they could help me with
still don't know why that last backslash is magic XD

@Zanna Yeah, let's see if we can figure that out later, or gather enough information about it that one of us can post a good question about it. I wonder if some folks on Unix & Linux already know the answer...
@Zanna I'm going afk but only for a bit so when I come back I'll move some of these messages (that one and the discussion that came from it) to the island.

2:05 PM
25 messages moved from Raiders of the Lost Downboat
