@Mala fyi regarding this question I suggest you consider that whilst acting with the best of intentions, you are probably seeking to provide too much of a good thing. I might say I enjoy chocolate but that doesn't mean I'd want all my meals to be comprised primarily or entirely of chocolate.

@doppelgreener ooh, can you ping users not in the chat?

@NautArch IIRC, mods can.
I think.

@NautArch As a diamond moderator I can opt to ping anyone anywhere in any room, also known as superping. (@Yuuki You think right. :D)

niice
that question is interesting, but it does need to be more directed and I'm not sure it's really worth it.

1 hour later…
5:31 PM
@doppelgreener It was the explicit wish of my gf to attack with as many dice as possible as often as possible. My only mistake was to ask the question here in the new rpg.se where all kinds of character build questions are seemingly no longer welcome.
I simply cannot believe that anyone without bad faith could find so many flaws in such a simple premise :(

@Mala It's not that the question isn't welcome. It's that people want to give you the right answer. And to do that, they feel they need more details

@Mala That's always been the case, nothing new about that -- we've always closed various kinds of character build questions for various reasons. If that's their explicit wish and you want to pursue the question, I recommend mentioning that, since right now it's just "this person likes dice, so i'm gonna make them roll all the dice all the time" and missing that intermediary step that they asked for that as well.

@Mala When you say "attack with as many dice as possible", are you looking for as many attacks as possible, as much damage dice as possible, or an either/or?

(apologies for the edit pings)

And has your table considered using Proficiency Dice instead of the straight modifier?

5:35 PM
This is all covered in my question :(

@Mala I've read it and am confused. I'm not trying to belligerent, but trying to best understand what you're really trying to do. But I can back off.

It is explicitely mentioned.
@NautArch What is confusing?

The "they asked for lots of dice all the time" thing isn't mentioned, at least.
There's just feedback about them liking it when they roll lots of dice. It does feel awesome to do, though fistfuls of dice all the time can also be a major problem.

> Throwing lots of dice to attack makes me feel powerful, I really like that.
> The 'many dice' should not be only in a nova or rarely used ability. It doesn't matter if its a caster, a melee attacker or whatever, just that you throw a lot of dice all the time, all throughout the adventure day.
yes it is

@Mala The difference between getting to DO something with all of the dice vs just causing damage. Lots of attacks at advantage lead to damage and possible crit rolling. A singular attack with a lot of damage once is a counter to that.

5:38 PM
Ok, there's a miscommunication here.

@NautArch The 'many dice' should not be only in a nova or rarely used ability. It doesn't matter if its a caster, a melee attacker or whatever, just that you throw a lot of dice all the time, all throughout the adventure day.
> A good answer has a build that is viable. It doesn't need to be CharOp levels of optimised, but it shouldn't be a burden on the party either. Therefore, self-inflicted disadvantage (as mentioned in comments) is not in the solution space, as well as similar self-harming methods, unless they actually improve the combat capabilities of the character.

I'm saying: you mentioned they like the thing. You are not saying anywhere that they asked to do the thing absolutely all the time, but you appear to have taken what you quoted from them to mean they'd like that. This is why I mentioned that chocolate analogy: me saying I like chocolate doesn't mean I want all chocolate all the time; I'd get sick of it. If they said "I like rolling lots of dice, it makes me feel powerful", that's different if they also said "Please help me do that all the time."

@doppelgreener The 'many dice' should not be only in a nova or rarely used ability. It doesn't matter if its a caster, a melee attacker or whatever, just that you throw a lot of dice all the time, all throughout the adventure day.

... Ok?
You've quoted that bit, yes.

How can this be misunderstood to mean anything except rolling lots of dice all the time
it's right there

5:40 PM
I think you're not reading what I'm saying.
Either that or there's some kind of major communication breakdown.

It's in the constraits, very clearly and obviously spelled out
*constraints

I understand that.

@Mala because you don't always get to roll lots of dice all of the time. FOr instance, a sneack attack lets you roll a lot of dice ON A HIT. But if you don't hit, then you don't roll many dice. On the side, you probably roll less dice as a fighter between damage and attacks, but you get more attacks (more rolling) and damage (more rolling for less total dice than a sneak attack)

@NautArch Yes. That's why it's not an obvious question to answer, but something that experts here would be expected to know.

@Mala but you aren't clarifying what your preference is and expecting us to know.

5:42 PM
Or, if not know, to be able to deduce
@NautArch It is right there in the question.

okay, i'm out.

thanks

44 messages moved from RPG General Chat

i'm sorry for bailing, was just approaching "not nice" and didn't want to go there

It was becoming nonconstructive, yes.

5:46 PM
??
Why did you remove this from the main room?
@doppelgreener

It wasn't going well as a conversation and was turning unpleasant for two individuals (myself and NautArch), so I decided to move it out of the way of the general chat room.

Yeah you two ganging up on me was unpleasant but I was still hoping it could be saved

I'm sorry it came across that way then.

You invited me to chat, you bombared me with questions where the answer was clear in the text of the question

Yes, and I seem to have entirely failed to communicate to you that I understand all of that and that there is an issue remaining there that you might've wanted to consider.

5:50 PM
I got that but you never mentioned the actual issue
just stuff that was in the question

Except I did, several times, and have apparently failed to communicate it.

Please write it in a simple phrase that even a moron like me can understand, and that is not answered with a copy-paste from my question.

I already tried that.
Well, not the moron bit. I already tried explaining it simply.

Yes, but all that was answerable with a copypaste
i.e. was already answered in the question
the missing part is the element that you think is missing that is NOT in the question text

Read this message and understand I am not talking about what you need to request in the question, I am talking about what your friend said ("I liked it when i threw lots of dice"), and what you took it to mean ("they want to throw lots of dice absolutely all the time"), and suggesting that you probably ought not take it that way.
Also that if they asked for throwing absolutely lots of dice all the time themselves explicitly, it's worth mentioning that they are asking for that themselves and not that you are asking for it on their behalf --- if they actually did ask for it.

5:55 PM
I really don't get it. You want a transcript of the conversation instead of the constraints clearly spelled out in the constraints section of the question?
That seems un-rpg.se like

That is not what I'm requesting.
Please note that I am also attempting to give you advice completely separate to a suggestion that if a particular thing was said by that player, it is worth mentioning that it was said by that player.

Why? The whole motivation part is not even required for the question.
Everything that's important is in the question and constraints section.
The question is fully answerable with that.

... Because I'm trying to give you a suggestion as one player to another player completely separate to the matter of any question or even this stack?

Yes, but how would this help?

Because based on the limited information I had, you appeared to be attempting to do something that wouldn't be fun for that person, and I was trying to suggest that might not be good.
Apparently you're sure it's fine, so, go right ahead.
I'm not really interested in continuing this conversation. You've sorted out your own thing and decided what you want to do, go ahead and do it.

6:00 PM
You seem to help me with stuff not related ot the question
I really don't understand
mxy killed my question
I thought you wanted to help me to get it reopened

That's correct. I am trying to talk to you about something not related to your question.
No, I am not trying to help you get it reopened.

Ok
So how would rewriting the optional motivation part of the question help me?
I really don't understand what you are trying to achieve.
DO I need help outside of that unfairly closed question?

I am looking out for you and your player, as one human being to another.

Related to your question, if your player explicitly asked to be able to roll loads of dice all the time, then it's worth mentioning they asked for this. Because you will save people the effort of telling you "you shouldn't do this at all."

People will tell you that you shouldn't do this at all for the reasons I poked you about this to begin with. Rolling a fistful of dice once in a while is great, everyone likes it, but doing it all the time makes the fun wear off and begins creating serious problems with slow play,

Yes, I get all that, but that's answered in the not being a burden to the partyt
it's also in the plain clear text of the question

Ok, sure.
Like I said, I am not trying to work on you improving your question.
I suggested you might want to mention they asked for something explicitly and that's it, and that's all the input I have on your question specifically.
The rest of what I'm saying is to do with you and your player, nothing to do with your question.

6:06 PM
Ok thanks.
Have a nice day.

You too.
