12:11 AM
Stayed up two hours longer than I should have, but managed to build my second level in a single evening. This one's more casual though, so I'll let my wife playtest it tomorrow before I upload it.

1 hour later…
1:20 AM
@MartinEnder Level for what game?
Oh, Super Mario Maker 2
If you guys like editor-based games, then you should try out Geometry Dash (full version)
It's only 2 dollars (on mobile) or 5-10 dollars (on steam)

2 hours later…
3:14 AM
@MilkyWay90 Looked it up: It looks like if you like making speedrun levels on SMM2, you'll like making levels on geometry dash

3:30 AM
@NathanMerrill There are many slow levels in Geometry Dash so... but yeah, you can go fast too in GD

yeah, there are slower levels, but there's still a flow to them
that's what makes building a good SMM speedrun level
you need a good flow from jump to jump

@NathanMerrill Ah, I see

3:54 AM
@MartinEnder Nice, I've been playing around with a more casual level as well (Hopefully trying to implement Mark Brown's philosophy on SMM2). It's intended to be an overall fairly easy level with light puzzle solving mechanics. I may have taken a touch of inspiration from your first level :P
I'm also using my wife as a playtester haha
Btw, I've been experiencing some pretty serious lag on the overworld sections of your level. Any idea what might be causing that?

This level still gives me chills
Actually, looking at it now, not anymore
I guess it's different when you play it with Surround Sound

2 hours later…
6:21 AM
@DJMcMayhem huh, no, I haven't seen any lag in the game at all (except in multiplayer). Does it go away if you collect the coins?

1 hour later…
7:34 AM
@AdmBorkBork Turns out both deals are available in Germany, but I only have an 8-day window to remember to get the remaining 9 months. (You can only get 3 months until you've been a Twitch prime member for 60 days.)

3 hours later…
10:10 AM
@DJMcMayhem Looking forward to it. :) I'm also loosely following that GMTK video, although it's basically just Level Design 101 (but in my first level slightly missed the mark with the difficulty of the second puzzle).

2 hours later…
12:26 PM
@MilkyWay90 Sweet mother of God

1:02 PM
What is even happening.

I don't know but I think I might need an exorcist now

1:32 PM
@MartinEnder I don't remember for sure but I think so. Have you tested it outside of the level editor?

nope, I'll try that later

1:59 PM
\o/ I beat GrandPOObear's shell jump tutorial
only took 29 minutes :D

2:15 PM
@MartinEnder So after playing with the editor for an evening, I'm feeling like it's super finnicky about what you can or can't do. Like, I can't put wings on a spring and make it fly up and down, only towards me. I can't make a pipe dispense only a single item at a time (unless it's a power up). I can't shoot koopa shells out of a bullet bill gun. I can't change a mushroom's direction. I can't attach a sound effect to a mushroom that came from a pipe.
Only red koopas can fly up and down? That doesn't make any sense at all

I think that last part is just how koopas have always worked in main series games.
But yeah, there are some really arbitrary restrictions.
The fact that you can't put pink coins into anything makes my new level a fair bit less elegant for example.

:/ I was almost positive that green koopas can fly up and down, but I guess I could be remembering it wrong.
But why can't a spring?
Oh, and also the fact that you can jump over the flag now has tripped me up too many times for me to count lol

Ha ha, yep
Especially good if the maker puts a killpit after the flag

I guess I could do a flying coin block and put the spring on top of that

@DJMcMayhem yeah I keep being surprised by that (especially since I'm replaying NSMBUD in parallel)

2:28 PM
Same. I'm trying to get the rest of the world 9 levels (So far I just have rock world)
The hidden levels are a lot harder to find then I was expecting

New Super Mario Bros Ultimate Deluxe SX Turbo HD Remix
Luigi Edition

@DJMcMayhem I recently saw the secret exit in 1-2 in a Ceave video and I've played that level probably a dozen times... so I think I'll just look up the secret levels when I've completed the rest of the game :D

@AdmBorkBork Weegee Edition is the superior version

Yeah, I had to look up that one. I'd like to find the other ones on my own, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to or not

2:41 PM
@Veskah What about the Squeegee Edition? It's pretty slick.

@AdmBorkBork Beegee Edition stays alive even after all this time

Oh yeah. I like that one, but a lot of people don't care for the music.

Heh, Fiji Edition is Super Mario Sunshine but starring Luigi and Daisy

@MartinEnder No, that's totally possible. If you damage yourself on the koopa, you'll be small then you just follow the same path the koopa shell does after hitting the on/off block

Also, Hiimdaisy Hiimdaisy Hiimdaisy

2:50 PM
@MartinEnder Oh, and BTW I watched my wife try out your level. She's not as familiar with Mario as I am, so 2 was really really hard for her. And she gave up after 4. But watching her made me realize a couple more notes of constructive criticism for you:

@DJMcMayhem oh, duh. of course
@DJMcMayhem not bad, my wife gave up in room two :D

But overall, I think it's a great course.
Oh, and one more thing I thought of: I love the puzzle for the last star coin. I didn't get it on the first try

1) I knew about that, but couldn't find a good way to prevent it, other than giving the player no reason to ever pick up the P-switch.

(s/star/super/ ?)

big?

2:52 PM
Sure haha
3) did happen to my wife after I beat level 4 for her haha
@MartinEnder It helped that I explicitly told her how to set down shells so that she wouldn't go through the ordeal that I did :P

2) yeah, you'd still have to grab it, but you wouldn't realise it until entering the next room which doesn't seem great. I'm sure there's a good solution for that problem though.

I think raising the soft platform above the plants would do it. Although you might have to lower that whole ledge for it to fit

3) I'm also aware of but was hoping that people who take the reset do so deliberately enough that it doesn't happen :D ... you can't move over the one-way wall, because then you can get hit without passing all the way through, skipping the first mushroom.

o_O Huh, I guess that makes sense

again, there's probably a solution that avoids either issue though, so good point

3:06 PM
A spike wall instead of doors?

3:16 PM
yeah that might work, but there's probably still a chance that people will hit it unintentionally
ideally, the exit of the door would drop you through the flower and then through a vertical one-way wall. but then people might not pay enough attention and just take the door when they're small.

So basically, if you make it more idiot-proof, the universe creates a bigger idiot? :P

Yeah, at a certain point, if they miss the flower, sucks to suck. Guess you'll get another chance in 20 seconds

3:44 PM
@Veskah Well, there are creepier levels than that, but they are NSFW (or maybe not; I'll still refrain from posting here to be safe)

TIO link it

um ok
Click at your own risk
pr not really
but nsfw warning
There's only two parts in it though
that are bad
And the video's embedded in two links
Also, did you know that someone made GoL in Geometry Dash?
It's only 5x5 though

oh no
So, I need your help (regardless of being it Geometry Dash, you don't need to know Geometry Dash to solve this)
Once decoding my file (the file which stores all your saved levels), I found a level to be encrypted in Base64
One decrypting the Base64 (which turned out to be the same process for decoding the whole file except w/o the XOR), I got a bunch of numbers and letters
and semicolons
So like this would be a data for storing a level with a single block at the origin
```
kS38,1_40_2_125_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1000_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_102_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1001_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_102_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1009_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_255_2_255_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1002_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_125_2_255_3_0_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1005_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_255_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1006_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|,kA13,0,kA15,0,kA16,0,kA14,,kA6,0,kA7,0,kA17,0,kA18,0,kS39,0,kA2,0,kA3,0,kA8,0,kA4,0,kA9,0,kA10,0,kA11,0;1,1,2,15,3,15;
Wait how do I get it to format the code?
4:00 PM
```
Can't remember if it's with triple `
```
Does anyone know what this ^ could possibly mean
I'm going to try making a level with nothing in it and seeing what happens
@Veskah Code formatting is done with Ctrl+K in SE chat.
oh
Too late
Get Pranked
I could edit it if you like
4:02 PM
I just tried but the message is too long.
That's an empty one
empty level
OH GUYS I THINK I FOUND IT
1,1,2,15,3,15;
I think that's the code to t h e block
I'll try fiddling around with it
So everything up to the first semi-color looks to be the header and then it's a list of objects in the level, eh?
I guess so
If you separate by pipe, the chunks are pretty similar
4:15 PM
What's a semi-color?
oh yeah they do
It's like a semi-colon but misspelled
Oh ok
Let me try two blocks
I feel smart now
I am now the loading screen from Geometry Dash
aww chat hasn't caught up yet
@Veskah Hmm, cool
kS38,1_40_2_125_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1000_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_102_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1001_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_102_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1009_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_255_2_255_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1002_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_125_2_255_3_0_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1005_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|1_0_2_255_3_255_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1006_5_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|,kA13,0,kA15,0,kA16,0,kA14,,kA6,0,kA7,0,kA17,0,kA18,0,kS39,0,kA2,0,kA3,0,kA8,0,kA4,0,kA9,0,kA10,0,kA11,0;1,1,2,45,3,15,21,1004;1,1,2,15,3,15,21,1004;
Hmmm
hmmmmmmmmmmm
What has changed
This is 2 blocks side-by-side
One is at the origin, the other at (1, 0)
Only new thing is another tuple at the end
1,1,2,45,3,15,21,1004;
1,1,2,15,3,15,21,1004;
4:22 PM
Oh cool
I think 45 and 15 must have something to do with coordinatates
30 units wide?
Yeah
2 super small movements = 1 small movement
15 small movements = one block
Okay
Ok, better
Okay, encoding back into GD
Moment of truth
IT WORKS
We changed a level the way we wanted to from the text!
This is soooo cool!
Nice
4:30 PM
45 and 15 basically mean the distance from the origin
in super small steps
like 1/30 of a normal block
So now we need to know how HSV works in geometry dash
in the text'
Let's go normal color channels for now
oh no
oof
i accidentally xed out of the tab
Any difference?
This time I think it will be in the header
I feel like you could find the differences yourself. :P
Because we changed the color channels
I am trying to do it myself as I type
>1_255_2_0_3_0_11_255_12_255_13_255_4_-1_6_1_7_1_15_1_18_0_8_1|
Another byte in the header at the end
4:36 PM
ninjaed
Okay
err, packet? Entry? whatever you want to call it
Maybe it is the color channel 1
Simple online diff tools certainly exist.
Oh, box's record also changed. Last value went from 1004 -> 1
Just saying that this is a box with a red outline
@El'endiaStarman Oh, thanks for telling me that
I'll try playing around with the new entry
Scratch that, I'll try finding what part i need to play around with
I'll try using different colors and different color channels
ok, decoding
ok, decoding the level
@DJMcMayhem Uploaded my new level: YD4-PN2-4LG
Sweet, I'll try it out this evening!
You'll probably be asleep by the time I get to try it out unfortunately :P
7:49 PM
that's fine :)
8:17 PM
@DJMcMayhem Just replayed my first level didn't see any lag.
Oh damn my second level is getting a surprising amount of organic plays right after upload. Maybe the issues Ceave mentioned have been fixed.
Weird
