@ArnaudD. Thanks for your edit in: When should each type of pipe be used?
> For conditions in set notation, use again \mid.
I wonder whether we should mention also adjusting vertical height using \left..\middle..\right there.
But that is probably too fancy (and unnecessary for Math.SE - which is not a professional publication).
And also it is likely a bit complicate for beginners.
This is mentioned in some TeX.SE threads.
What I mean is this. I can use \left, \right with curly brackets.
$\left\{n \mid \frac{A(n)}n\le\varepsilon\right\}$
Some people might prefer to increase also the size of "|", but in that case \mid can no longer be used (at least without some modification).
I could use this:
$\left\{n \middle| \frac{A(n)}n\le\varepsilon\right\}$
However, spacing is not right, so I might need to adjust it:
$\left\{n \,\middle|\, \frac{A(n)}n\le\varepsilon\right\}$ or $\left\{n \;\middle|\; \frac{A(n)}n\le\varepsilon\right\}$
This is probably not needed in that post, still I've at least ask here.
(Although perhaps I would include some example in the bullet point about set notation.)
Personally, when I LaTeX documents, I use ";" rather than "|" - but that is just my personal preference.

@MartinSleziak I use a vertical bar, but then a lot of the things I work with are function spaces; $\{ f:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} : \text{stuff} \}$ is awkward. ;)

@MartinSleziak do you really use a semi-colon (;) or rather a colon (:)?

10:42 PM
Yes. Is that bad choice for some reason?

No. It's just that colon seems a lot more common to me, and I thought it might have been a typo. For example @Xander seems to reply as if you used colon.

11:00 PM
@quid Oh, shoot! That is a semicolon, and not a colon! I misread it.
I don't think that I have ever seen a semicolon in that context.
It is less bad than a colon, but I still think that a vertical bar is better, since it can scale. ;)
$$ \left\{ \frac{a}{b} \ \middle|\ a,b\in\mathbb{Z} \right\} $$

@XanderHenderson I don't like the vertical bar for reasons dual to yours. I don't want to write {x in R | |x|>2 } etc.
Maybe we should join Martin!
I think I have seen comma.

11:15 PM
@quid It could be worse: $ \{ u\in L^2 \ |\ \|u\|=1\} $ :P
On a related note: $$ \frac{\overline{\Xi}}{\Xi}$$
Which is really hard to read when handwritten.

Yes, the xi one features prominently in some urban legend.
