@Wipqozn it does say "$70 for a box of masks" so i would wonder how many are in a box and how much they normally were before all of this

The worst part is the masks don't even help. The virus isn't airbourne. A mask is completely useless for protecting yourself.

@Wipqozn true, it only helps if you're infected

“.@KatieHill4CA gets run out of Congress for screwing a campaign staffer absent any complaint.

@SenatorBurr stays as Intelligence Chairman after screwing all Americans by falsely reassuring us w opeds on #COVID while he dumped his stock portfolio early.

This is not fair.”
did he get hacked...?
or did he fall down and hit his head?

3 hours later…
you misspelled "told" probably

I mean in that case I'm waiting

2 hours later…
6:00 AM
> "UT has been notified that five UT students, traveling together and with other UT students during Spring Break, have tested positive for COVID-19," the university announced over the weekend. "We sincerely wish our students, and any others who may be affected, a full and rapid recovery."
yeh, it was really a great idea to pack yourselves at beaches and bars like idiots huh

2 hours later…
8:17 AM
OH GEE WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED

1 hour later…
9:24 AM
Uderzo just passed away

4 hours later…
12:58 PM
Tokyo is finally postponing

1:10 PM
Yesterday Inslee announced that everything must close in 48 hours
(except stuff like pharmacies, grocery stores, & take out)
Hiding replies is a stupid feature
because Twitter will tell you “hey look at these replies they didn’t like” every time
It makes them more prominent

oh wow, I never realized this, but because of COVID, a lot of struggling newspapers might fold (pun not intended)
Because while their subscribers will keep paying, those that randomly pick up a newspaper at a newspaper stand either can't do that anymore because the stand has been closer, or won't because they work from home and can't pick it up anymore on the way to work or the train

STEPHEN A: Skip I want to ADDRESS this issue.
[BAYLESS nods]
You KNOW I think every life matters
BAYLESS: Absolutely
STEPHEN A: [BUT!](https://twitter.com/LisPower1/status/1242443271634386952)

@Nzall oh great!
that normal test seems so bad that some people probably would get to nervous to take it
it’s like strep throat but they also stab through your nose

> "Correction officers pepper sprayed eight inmates over the weekend when they tried to go to a jail clinic to check their temperatures after a potential coronavirus case surfaced inside their Rikers Island unit, department records show" t.co/Qq14pEXpx0

> Defying a national trend of campus closures, President Jerry Falwell Jr. has invited students to return to residence halls and has directed faculty members to continue to report to campus even as most classes move online.

2:59 PM
So apparently we are at the "staying home for a little while is worse than dying of respiratory failure" part of the apocalypse

3:28 PM
The "everything is fine, go back to work" policy being promoted by some of these blockheads (including Trump) is... callous and stupid in so many ways. Not the least of which it isn't even likely to work

3:46 PM
(Because so many of the stay-at-home orders are at the state/county/city level, and even if they weren't, nobody believes Trump. Or, nobody should believe Trump anyway; clearly some do.)

Cohen denied home confinement, with the judge stating he just wanted to inject himself back into the news cycle

I mean
Yeah probably

@TimStone on the other hand, the justice dept should probably be doing everything they can right now to empty prisons before they get ravaged by the virus
if its not already too late
Posted on an advice site, but if lots of companies act like this, this is definitely news:
> I just got off of a conference call with corporate in which they told us that if the U.S. government sends us the proposed stimulus checks due to Covid 19, they plan to absorb the money we receive by cutting our hours to reflect that amount. In other words, if each person receives a check for $1,200, $1,200 will effectively go back to the company.
Think there was a mention of this above, but no link: 2020 Olympics postponed a year

4:06 PM
@BradC i really really hate my state

@Yuuki MO governor isn't much better, but all my local counties have issued stay-at-home orders

4:59 PM
@BradC Oh, definitely. Just not only for Michael Cohen, which seems to be the tone

god the "I don't want people to die but" discourse is going super hard today
good lord

5:44 PM
tbf as far as I know none of them actually are economists

True, Lloyd is just an investment banker

CTV didn't actually come out and say it, but we might have the first few cases of community spread in NS. Good job asshole snowbirds not following self-isolation guidelines.

6:02 PM
@MBraedley Might be a family friend. Some people come back from vacation, and just came into the office, even though they were sick with a cough.
And iirc that family friend has issued that makes their immune system compromised
@Unionhawk "I don't want people to die, but I'm worried people not following the self isolation and social distancing guidelines will result in a lot of needless deaths" is the only good way to end that sentence.
someone called into the CBC the other day, to "ask" a question to the guest (a doctor), but their "question" was just them essentially saying "The only people who are going to die old people and those with comprised immune systems, so who cares? The economy is more important". They then proceeded to hang up saying "I'll take your answer OFF THE AIR". Since they obviously knew what they were doing.

So doubling time in NS is 2-3 days (although might not be a great measure since the majority are directly travel related), but that means the entire province will be infected in under 2 months if that rate is maintained (20 doubling events = 40-60 days).

Once the host and guest finished getting over the shock of "this person is a rite ol' piece of shit", the doctor did a good job of explaining that A) An out of control pandemic would be worst for the economy than temporary isolation and B) what even the fuck is wrong with you, it's not all dollars and cents
@MBraedley Hopefully the newest measures will help. Thing is, it take up to 2 weeks for symptoms to show, so there's really a "delay" before our precautions really have a noticeable effect.
Honestly we should've started doing things way sooner, instead of waiting for the sick to arrive.

2 hours later…
8:14 PM
Horrible. 42-year old mammogram technician died in her home, test confirmed COVID-19. She was not found until 12 to 16 hours after her death, and her 4 or 5 year old child was with her.

9:09 PM
Good if true
Different than my state, where gun stores have been declared an "essential service"
> Sheriff Villanueva also said he’s adding 1,300 deputies to patrol, that he’s released 1,700 nonviolent inmates from county jails, and criticized how local politicians have handled the messaging behind the numerous stay-at-home orders.
Good extended interview, actually.

@Nzall wait, as in Asterix and Obelix Uderzo?

@KorvinStarmast yeah
Goscinny died in the 70s, but Uderzo survived until today. He died from a heart attack

@Nzall Thanks, very sorry to see. I had great joy with A and O as a kid, and we passed that love of fun and funny down to our kids.
@Nzall About a year ago, the lady who translated their adventures and jokes into English passed away. Great obit about her in the Economist, it may still be up in the on line world.

@BradC Dan Patrick can get into the sea but at least my county judge declared a "stay at home, work safe" order ("shelter in place" is reserved for hurricanes and plant explosions (haha, houston amirite)).

9:54 PM
Someone pointed out that this is just people in power failing a high stakes marshmallow test in real time

Controlled slowdown now and we mostly come out in the end, or uncontrolled slowdown later because guess what tons of people dying is not good for the economy!
Stonks go up immediately for a bit then crash forever, or eventually we'll be back

@TimStone My impression is that many of these deadlines are known to be unrealistic, and they're just punting the decision for later. So I wouldn't be sure they'd acutally reopen then, though it wouldn't shock me if they actually were that stupid

@TimStone I bet they want power to not refund people in a class action suit or something
“Well you could have gone their with your tickets but you didn’t so it’s your fault”

10:03 PM

10:35 PM
@BradC you can undo damage to an economy as it recovers, you can't undo death
the same thing can be said to anyone saying about hurting the economy to fight climate change, you can't undo "a dead ass fucked up planet"
> They would be directly undoing what that money is intended to accomplish
oh no no no no no, that article is wrong, the money was never supposed to be for the employees and everyone knew that

11:10 PM
The coronavirus isn’t mutating quickly, suggesting a vaccine would offer lasting protectionvv
I'll too mobile and lazy to fix
@BradC ~ Capitalism ~
Also, this is why trickle down economics and bail outs don't work

Yeah but on the other hand have you considered that it would be bad to just give people money the wall street journal said so
