@TimStone according to a guest that was on ABC (Australia) News last night this is good, it sates the desire for revenge for the assassination in Iran and at the same time allows the US to let it go because no one was killed
@TimStone but at the same time this

5 hours later…
5:15 AM
Prediction for Trump's/Fox News's story:
> Iran recklessly attacks US
> Trump saves us from WWIII
Shit am I giving them good ideas?

5:32 AM
Hey everyone remember to get your flu shots!
Just got mine today, way too late
I heard that one person so far in my like 250K-people county has died from the flu. Try to not be that person, with the magic of herd immunity!

4 hours later…
9:34 AM
Good morning, has WWIII started yet?

Ave
10:02 AM
not yet afaik
I'm not hearing bombs outside so that's good

Progress! Or.. something like it

> In other news organizations, the mug shot itself sometimes seems to be the purpose of the story.

The person’s crimes are minor, but he or she had an awkward expression or a face covered with tattoos. Some journalist then decides that mug shot will be really amusing online and will allow the story to get a lot of pageviews on the website.

Spoiler alert: This strategy will probably work. But that’s not the type of newsroom I want to lead -- or even work in. That doesn’t seem fair or responsible to me.

Good on WCPO!

2:24 PM
News in Canadian culture!
Probably the last copy of them anywhere

2:51 PM
@Elva apparently maybe sort of got canceled...?

Wow, that's a much higher percentage than the normal "trump approval" distribution:
Sorry, question is: "Has the killing of Soleimani and its immediate aftermath made the United States more safe or less safe?"
55% less safe, only 24% more safe

Hmm yes, asking the average population is clearly the right way to determine what is good foreign policy

@Elva Better than ignoring US intelligence agencies and listening only to Fox News pundits

Same class of error, different magnitude?
It's still listening to people who don't know what the F they are talking about

@Elva Its apples and toasters; how the US public perceives Trump's handling of foreign policy is an important and relevant political question, especially during/alongside the impeachment; nobody's suggesting using polling to make military decisions
Its unclear from this article whether the administration can go ahead and transfer the money now (which is what the lower court stopped), I guess that's kind of implied, by putting a stay on a stop order?

3:07 PM
@BradC Yeah I suppose that's true

3:30 PM
@Elva I also think its rather notable that this is the clearest instance we've seen in a long time of members of Trump's own party being willing to voice some degree of disapproval of his actions.
Exactly the same reason that it was so notable what the GOP Senate and House members were saying coming out of that White House Security Briefing yesterday

@BradC Kurd abandoning had a bigger Senate response I think

@Stormblessed true. We'll see if this one gets forgotten as quickly as that one did

3:58 PM
Saw some of these clips yesterday, but here's a summary of the reactions to yesterday's briefing:
> Lawmakers' frustrations in the briefing came to a head when Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., asked Pompeo when, if not during a situation like this, the administration thinks it needs Congress to authorize the use of military force, according to a Senate aide with knowledge of the briefing. The aide wasn’t authorized to discuss the classified briefing publicly and requested anonymity.
> Pompeo and the other administration officials wouldn't directly answer the question. Instead, they responded by chiding the senators for harping on the issue and arguing that asking for authorization emboldens Iran. Their response set off both Democratic and Republican lawmakers who were in the room, the aide said, and the briefing ended soon after.

I bet he made a crisis that he can fix because he’s worried he’ll get impeached

I mean, he doesn't currently need authorization to engage in lethal force. And guess who can decide that he needs it again?
So do your fricking job and reign in the toddler in chief
Or preferably. Toss him in prison >.>

4:29 PM
> The aircraft is believed to have been struck by a Russia-built Tor-M1 surface-to-air missile system, known to NATO as Gauntlet, the three officials told Newsweek.
> One Pentagon and one U.S senior intelligence official told Newsweek that the Pentagon's assessment is that the incident was accidental. Iran's anti-aircraft were likely active following the country's missile attack, which came in response to the U.S. killing last week of Revolutionary Guard Quds Force commander Major General Qassem Soleimani, sources said.
So they fired the missiles, then activated their own defensive missile detection/intercept system, which mistakenly targeted a commercial flight
I mean, it explains the timing

5:19 PM
I just came here to post This. I had a bad feeling we'd hear something like this. The timing was too suspect.

*american sources say

5:43 PM
@Unionhawk You're an American source!

6:20 PM
That's so awful. :(

7:38 PM
Trudeau to address reports Iranian missile likely brought down Ukrainian flight, killing 63 Canadians cbc.ca/news/politics/champagne-iran-plane-crash-1.5420398
wait, does he have a beard now?

It's got grey hairs and everything
This is wild

> Ordinarily, when an administration is poised to impose economic sanctions on a foreign country, there’s some kind of briefing, usually involving the Treasury Department. There was no such briefing yesterday. CNN reported, “[I]t was not immediately clear what shape those sanctions would take. The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.”

I can't get past the beard

7:43 PM
In particular that his beard is all grey, but his hair isn't. Does he dye his hair and not his beard, or has his beard hair just aged more?Grey hairs are weird
THE CONTRAST I HATE IT

Of course this is the same news conference where Trump said the Iranian plane was "flying in a pretty rough neighborhood"

@Unionhawk Trudeau confirmed that Canadian intelligence sources have also confirmed the plane was brought down by a missile.

user15026
@Wipqozn link to source?

Oh snap. A reporter just staright up asked Justin if they thought the US should share in the blame for this whole thing, since they created the situation
annnd Justin did not say not say. He just dodged the question, saying we need to investigate.

user15026
@Wipqozn thanks, I didn't think to scroll up because my brain is scrambly today

7:50 PM
@Ash No worries

@BradC what

and a reporter is circling back to the "US the at fault for this" question, and justin once again essentially dodged the question, saying we "need to investigate more".

(twitter thread linking to WAPO article)
@Yuuki Yeah. Sounds taken out of context, but watch the video doesn't seem to help.
Its very weird. Even if you ignore the "drugs" part of it, he seems to be saying that he's still taking the salary but doing (something specific) with it, just not putting it his bank account??
Or something?? Which... is still taking the salary

He was just asked a third time abotu US blame, and he once again said "It's too soon to draw such conclusions"
Someone just asked about trump statement about Iran (I think?) being "A rough neighborhood" and justin just said "I'll let president trumps words speak for themselves"

@Wipqozn lol, that's a perfect response; both a dodge and a slam all at the same time
@Wipqozn the (partial) quote was "I have my suspicions ... it was flying in a pretty rough neighborhood. Some people say it was mechanical. I don't even think that's a question, personally."

8:13 PM
@BradC I wasn't aware of the full quote, thanks

8:42 PM
not a whole lot to see from that far away (small flash), but it seems that they've verified the location and time it was taken
> A small explosion occurred when a missile hit the plane, but the plane did not explode, the video showed. The jet continued flying for several minutes and turned back toward the airport, The Times has determined. The plane flew toward the airport ablaze before it exploded and crashed quickly, other videos verified by The Times showed.

I have seen the video, like here, but where it was filmed from, and when, is not confirmed.
@BradC To see what the hubub is about, you have to go frame by frame through the first few frames of the video to see something coming in from the left before the bright flash.

@KorvinStarmast yep, I can see the two tiny moving dots before the flash

@BradC Where and when that video was taken is ... unknown. Allegely original source is Telegram, an Iranian messaging service but take that with grain of salt
What I find interesting (as a former military person) is two things. (1) it hapened at about 0615 local. (Maybe shift change or end of a long watch that lasted through the night?
(2) Aircraft fly right at that IRGC facility Every Day. That is a standard departure route (PAROT 2 and PAROT 3) out of that airport that flies that route every day ...

@KorvinStarmast well, I presume the Times means something by saying they "verified" it. What exactly they mean isn't entirely clear

(I have some experience with Air Defense and Air Ops, but I am a bit past my expiry date at this point).
@BradC I'd give it about 24 more hours and see what crops up ... lots of misinformation seems to be flying around.

9:01 PM
@KorvinStarmast hey puns are my job /s

9:25 PM
@KorvinStarmast If I had one tidbit to add about Telegram, would you be interested?

9:37 PM
wait isn't telegram encrypted(?) whatsapp
what

That's what I was going to add, Telegram is another WhatsApp/Signal
WhatsApp is owned by Facebook with all the privacy concerns that come with that
Telegram is closed-source roll your own encryption by two Russian guys, which I don't trust at all
Signal is open source and vetted by outside parties
But they all claim to do the same thing.
I was going to say it's more appropriate to say that Telegram is a sometimes-encrypted messaging service popular in Iran.
Its group chats are unencrypted by default, which

"an iranian messenging service" is just patently wrong though
except in that it is available in Iran probably

@Unionhawk Agreed.

9:59 PM
@puzzlepiece87 yes please, learning is good
@Unionhawk Thank you for the correction! Appreciated, I misunderstood what I had learned earlier.

@KorvinStarmast I put everything above already in response to Unionhawk :) Basically was just adding that Telegram may be used by Iranians but that it's not Iranian software.

@puzzlepiece87 Again, I thank you. :)

@Elva "average population" = Trump Base because he would say that all Americans told him they feel safer now

I may post a question when Diablo IV comes out ... rarely drop by Arcade any more ...

Oh, did you see that Riot posted a video for the 2020 League season?

10:14 PM
@Stormblessed more seems like he wanted to score election points
"so long as I am president, Iran will never have Nuclear Weapons" more or less trying to make the populace fear the fact that Iran is going to have nukes if Trump is removed, which is more or less bullshit because before Trump Iran had no nukes thanks to the deal Trump pulled out of which the Iranians are now saying they will not respect
not saying Trump is a bug mastermind who pulled out of the Iran Deal to create a climate for him to fix and get reelected, but he caused the mess in the first place

And honestly, this behavior is just massively encouraging Iran to get nuclear weapons.

@Yuuki cool, will take a look. I need to spend some riot points while I still have them.

Because Trump tiptoes around Kim Jong Un.

did hear he said that he's ready to make a new deal with Iran. to be honest i would not be surprised for Iran to say "and go though this shit again? fuck off America with your back stabbing deals"

10:21 PM
Taking a cue from the Weinstein lawyers, apparently

@BradC "I would've never gotten convicted of sexual assault if it wasn't for this check notes increased awareness that I sexually assaulted people!"

Critics: Trudeau is too young and inexperienced to lead the country
*Trudeau grows a white beard*
Critics: fuck, guess we have to beat that Black Face horse more

The only thing actually quoted in the article that appears to "blame the #metoo era" is the following:
> Given the current cultural context, lawyer Brian W. Perry wrote that allowing other accusers to testify in a sex assault case “flips constitutional jurisprudence on its head, and the ‘presumption of guilt,’ rather than the presumption of innocence, becomes the premise.”
And that phrase ("given the current cultural context"), isn't even inside the quotes from the filing... so until we see the filing, the headline might be a bit hyperbolic.
Shocking, I know.

@Wipqozn then Trudeau goes to the toilet for a full bowel movement, washes his hands, styles his beard, comes back and says "to clarify what the president said" and says what he was going to say anyway
Trudeau: thank god that Trump can speak for hours without actually saying anything
@BradC isn't the ... part when he's saying that he's not going to say his suspicions because other people have the same ones. more sounds like he has none and just waiting for QAnon to make something up for him to use

> "It's not personal because he was a terrorist and the mastermind." The source also said taking out Soleimani had been Pompeo's mission for a decade.
Press X to Doubt
I mean, I'm not saying that Soleimani was a good guy but maybe you could've picked a scenario better than "hey, let's bait him using peace negotiations".

10:58 PM
@Yuuki and that's the real issue, the end does not justify the means

user15026

In less terrifying news, Bank of Canada to seek nominations for who should be on the new $5 bill. Last time they did this it was for the $10 bill and we got a lady on it (Viola Desmond). I am hoping we get more than just some dead white dude or something. (Currently Laurier is on the $5, I believe?)
