@Unionhawk I wonder why this sounds familiar...
hmm....
cough
Josef Mengele (; German: [ˈmɛŋələ]; 16 March 1911 – 7 February 1979) was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and physician in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. He performed deadly human experiments on prisoners and was a member of the team of doctors who selected victims to be killed in the gas chambers. Arrivals that were judged able to work were admitted into the camp, while those deemed unsuitable for labor were sent to the gas chambers to be killed. With Red Army troops sweeping through Poland, Mengele was transferred 280 kilometers (170 mi) from Auschwitz to the Gross-Rosen...

@Unionhawk That classic Bibi reelection strategy, more war crimes!
An off-duty Hoover police officer is under investigation after a dispute with his wife early Saturday resulted in a handgun being discharged and her being shot, according to Alabama law enforcement officials. https://trib.al/PuslqyS
The argument was so heated it set off the bullet
They were wrestling over the gun per the article but that would imply someone was attempting to use said gun 🤔

@Unionhawk what the fuck
@TimStone ah yes, deadly use of passive voice

wtaf

@Unionhawk how tf is this legal?

because wage theft is just regular
It's super easy to claim that workers are tipped to save 4.40 per hour
In wages that you technically have to make up if they're, you know, not
gestures broadly at that not happening

Also, by “bike accident” they apparently mean “a motorcycle flew into the stands.” JFC, political spinsters are more forthright... #PIOFail https://twitter.com/summitcofair/status/1099501188217782272

5:59 AM
@TimStone uhhhh how tf

HOLD THE DATE! We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!
So…we're doing the Fourth of July

@TimStone no no no, it just happens to be on the same date and do the same things
it's very different actually

4:43 PM
Ah, of course

6:15 PM
Marco Rubio out here doing...whatever posting a mashup of Gaddafi and Gaddafi about to be executed is

user15026
@TimStone why

user15026
@TimStone so.... How is this different from normal

@Ash It does some special processing to get super sharp images or something? Which is kind of cool, I guess? But something I'd probably actually need like 0% of the time
@Ash It's about him, now!

user15026
@TimStone oh right that makes sense okay carry on how far I question such an obvious thing

user15026
@TimStone yeah it seems like one of those okay cool tech but will anyone actually notice/care to use it

6:20 PM
Yeah, especially in a $700 phone. Not that phones aren't absurdly expensive, but I'm curious if they've made trade offs to shove all of those in there
Urgh, yeah, it's only a Snapdragon 845 for starters. Does have an in-display fingerprint sensor which is nifty, but looks like no rear one which I've found more convenient personally
Local @Walgreens replaced their clear freezer doors with digital displays that tell you what's inside the case. Wh... why
WAT

user15026
@TimStone yeah, having the rear one on my pixel makes me happy, it just is easier for me to manage when my hands are being stupid about being hands

user15026
@TimStone what why what was wrong with the fucking window

I DON'T KNOOOOOOOW
I asked if it's interactive, that might make the tiniest bit more sense?

user15026
Maybe but what sort of interactivity would be better than see thing open door fish out frozen thing keep doing

user15026
Like not everything needs fancy tech! A door with a window is perfectly good here.

6:26 PM
Like if this improved accessibility for reading ingredients or something then maybe, but I a) doubt it does that b) 100% you open the door and the item is out of stock

@TimStone it's more about light sensitivity as far as I understand. Three of the cameras are monochrome, so they're better at low light, and they're adding up all five images in some way.

Ah, right, right

user15026
@TimStone exactly lol

Someone stop the technologists
@Ash I guess there is a little benefit for the employees at least, in that they don't have to hold the door open and freeze their hands off replacing the mylars with the prices every week >_>
Actually no
I'm sure those are still inside, because of course
Oh my god
@__apf__ @Walgreens They're serving you targeted ads via facial recognition 🤦 https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/2/7/18215629/walgreens-cooler-screens-frozen-food-eye-tracking-ads (made by https://www.coolerscreens.com/ )
It's somehow even worse

tired: freezer cases that have lights on always

6:33 PM
@TimStone This is probably something like the screen being a potentially better ad for the stuff inside, it ensures you can always clearly see the full label. And they might add some moving stuff or so. Probably still a very dubious benefit, and just outright stupid in some way

LEED: freezer cases with motion sensor lights
inspired: this shit

It has eye tracking and guesses your age and gender so if you're a MANLY MAN WITH A MANLY APPETITE it can sell you those Devour frozen meals with the sexualized ads

@TimStone I vaguely remember some case a few years ago where a screen had an error and directly output the result of this kind of people recognition to the screen

Heh, nice

6:58 PM
@TimStone What kind of store are you going to that they need to replace price tags every week?

user15026
@TimStone nooooo thank you

user15026
@Nzall store sales?

@Ash Here in Belgium at the Delhaize, they just glue them to the window
Also, somehow I think that having always-on electronics in the door instead of well insulating glass is not exactly good for the climate

@Nzall They just frequently change prices, for whatever reason, often sales like @Ash mentioned. My fiancee used to work specifically at this chain of stores and they had to replace prices in various parts of the store at least weekly

@TimStone In Belgium, they just have electronic price tags they can control remotely

7:08 PM
Yeah, that makes more sense to me

They also have a a self-scanning system that's very fun to use: you scan your member card at the entrance and get a scanner Then you can just scan whatever you wish to buy and put it directly into your shopping bag. Then when you get to the exit, you just plug the scanner into the receptacle and scan your card again. it processes everything, you then just scan your coupons, maybe ask the standby clerk to remove some clam packaging, pay and simply leave
short video that shows how it works

Huh, interesting

It's really well thought out. They even made the processing of the things you scanned seem slower than it probably is to account for the human misconception that if something's instant, it didn't work properly.

user15026
@Nzall Huh, thats neat

They also considered things like theft etc: when you get to the end, there's a chance you must get part or all of what's in your shopping cart validated against what's on your scanned items list as a check against theft

7:31 PM
Here we went the opposite direction and lock up things like baby formula on the shelf >_>

That…is actually not an indictment against Trump in this case 🤔

9:08 PM
This story is insane. A mechanic witnessed the aftermath of a robbery, and his statements were in charging docs. Someone, likely a judge, accidentally sent them to all case parties. The main suspect made bail, found the mechanic and executed him https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/02/22/court-official-failed-click-box-witness-paid-with-his-life/?utm_term=.abe203308fe2

9:47 PM
@TimStone when it says “A Salute To America” who do you think Trump means by America? the people? the country? or himself?
@Ash no ads, things look untidy
the step before replacing them with a touch screen that then spit it out of a slot because too many people were getting trapped inside because stupid
@TimStone that too

2 hours later…
11:39 PM
@TimStone where is the lie?
@TimStone holy shit how is the judge not considered negligent for this?

> That error happened 1,500 times across the state in a one-year period starting last June
Apparently it was an easy mistake to make
