@quartata just a friendly FYI that the rooms scope has recently been changed to restricted more to news and not just random tweets

@Wipqozn To be fair, the current discussion was on Musk's tweet (which was news) and this was marginally related to the discussion.
In that I guess it was a like-minded tweet to something I said.

@Yuuki that's fair, but I only said something since there seemed to be a few tweets that weren't really news

I really don't get why oneboxing a witty response is worse than me delivering said witty response without attributing it
I'll cop to me linking the poll on "should Musk unionize his workers," but not that one
It wasn't "news," it was a joke in reply to something
like throwing out a dril tweet as a forum weapon, I dunno
Oh hey, I missed this:
Just FYI He’s criticizing a nonprofit that’s reporting on worker safety at Tesla factories by saying they’re driven by profit https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/999364333674024960

lol
@quartata PolitiFact responded like "Hey we kinda do that? Why don't you donate?" and his response was "mmm maybe when you accept PayPal lol" and just throw the whole internet into the sea I'm done

CONFIRMED: there will be TWO closed-door WH briefings tomorrow... - WH COS Kelly to be in both. - one w/ Nunes and Gowdy. - the other Gowdy plus any members of Gang of 8 avail. (@SpeakerRyan is not avail., his spox tells me.)

@Chippies And it's also the name of the very famous Russian state-sponsored newspaper/propoganda outlet.
Maybe pick another word for "truth" that isn't so loaded.

People keep saying it's a bad name for that reason but that's his goal so it's pretty fitting
"If only they only wrote about the good things I do"

@TimStone Fair, I guess, but if he doesn't want to look like a complete tool then he should be a bit more sensible about the name.

@Yuuki Elon Musk isn't known for original names anyway :P

@Yuuki You have just been voted down on Pravda

2:51 AM
@TimStone Anecdotal evidence, but a lot of self-identified "centrists" I know are also incredibly cynical with politics and are all "well, dictators can get things done quick" without really thinking about the consequences.

3:20 AM
Oh for the love of god
Trump will be on Fox and Friends again tomorrow morning

@TimStone ofcause, not like he has anything better to do

3:36 AM
Giuliani reveals he hasn't spoken with Trump in a "couple weeks" http://hill.cm/AKsXRZc
i'm not surprised to be honest
> Giuliani told BuzzFeed that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said the FBI was “spying on the Russians and, in the course of spying on the Russians, they ended up spying on the Trump campaign.”
any more "saids" and we're going to see Chinese Whispers deterioration where the original message is lot
but assuming the FBI hasn't done anything bad, if spying on Russians meddling with the election ended up to also including the Trump Campaign then either there was collusion with the campaign.....or no one was aware and they just got used as tools. looks bad either way

Huckabee Sanders: Being called a liar "bothers me" http://hill.cm/3GEHisp
you got to feel sorry for her. she's in the same boat as alot of people where they can only go by what Trump says and they can't be shown to be second guessing everything he says, even though that's probably the norm now-a-days
gone are the days when a political lie was just clever wording. now they are full blown lies

@Memor-X I don't have to feel sorry for her, she can refuse to lie at any time

11:34 AM
@MadScientist I just don't understand how the USA is the only country that continues to deny climate change is a thing.

11:55 AM
@Wipqozn Because politics in the USA is fucked. Everything's become politicised, so that whether or not you 'believe' in climate change comes down to the party you associate with. Also there's a shitload of fundamental Christians for whom such a thing would be a moot point anyway, since it's all in God's hands.

12:29 PM
@fredley yeh and we've heard what happened the last time God raised the sea levels and why he did it. though he did it over 40 days and nights last time rather than doing it this slowly

For 40,000 years and 40,000 year-nights

@fredley have to wonder if every year he's up there yelling down to earth "STOP IT, I WILL SERIOUSLY FLOOD YOU IF YOU DON'T"

@Memor-X And afterwards there'll be a rainbow, but not, like, a gay one.

12:47 PM
POTUS tells Kilmeade re NFL rule against players kneeling during the anthem to protest police brutality: “You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country.”
Ah yes, this is very healthy

1:33 PM
@TimStone wasn't there a veteran in the NFL who kneeled as well?

I'm not positive about that. The idea of kneeling versus sitting on the bench was given to Kaepernick by a veteran to begin with though, as a respectful gesture that was still a form of protest
BREAKING: Trump cancels the North Korea summit in an open letter to Kim Jong Un
Oh my god
TRUMP to Kim Jong Un: Its "inappropriate" to have the summit at this time
"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used"

@TimStone he just couldn't help himself can't he

1:52 PM
Someone just interrupted South Korean Presidential Security Council member Kim Heung-Kyu while he was talking to inform him that the president pulled out of the summit. "Well that changes what I was going to say."

2:05 PM
@Yuuki I already have and begrudgingly admit @Unionhawk called it
I think the new evidence is important but it's not @Unionhawk 's fault he can see the future and the past and all of time at once.

.@SecPompeo testifies before Senate Foreign Relations Cmte – LIVE on C-SPAN3, @cspanRadio & online here: https://cs.pn/2J3IZDG
LOL
What impeccable timing

@TimStone Never saw that coming

He's reading the letter aloud which I cannot image being forced to do

@puzzlepiece87 There's a scientific marxism joke/comment in here somewhere, or something, but, eh

@Memor-X No, we actually don't have to feel sorry for her at all. You don't feel sorry for willing accomplices. If you don't want to be rightfully called a liar, don't repeatedly lie in public on easily disprovable matters. She deserves it and only one person at the whole WHCD said it to her face.
@KevinvanderVelden Amen.

1 hour later…
3:22 PM
Preliminary report on the Uber self-driving crash
I hope there’ll be some consequences for that

I do as well.

The autonomous system simply didn’t have the ability to emergency brake, by design

And doesn't alert the operator when it thinks an emergency brake is needed, either

Also, asking the safety driver to monitor the self-driving system itself, which the driver said they were doing during the crash, is just such a terrible idea on its own. It’s completely insane when you know the car can’t perform any emergency braking

Also, wtf on that intersection design
Those are criss-crossing brick sidewalks, yes?
But you're not supposed to cross where they meet the roadway?
It says there are 4 signs warning people to cross at the crosswalks at the intersection but I just don't get it.
Why would you tempt people via your design to cross there? Maybe it looks different on the ground.
Yes, I got on street view and confirmed that's exactly what they are.
That's crazy, of course people are going to try to cross there if you literally put sidewalks in inviting them by UI design to do so.
Also on street view, coming under the bridge with the trees and everything, you can't get any meaningful warning of the pedestrians that the sidewalk is inviting to cross the 45 mph speed limit road in front of you.
Deadly!

3:40 PM
Pretty sure the NTSB will also have some not so nice words about the road design there in the final report

perhaps not quite TIF material, but have we done people getting mad over Battlefield V including female soldiers lol

4:12 PM
@MadScientist Very interesting

Either I’m misreading this, or many other people are. But the lack of emergency braking doesn’t refer to the Volvo collision avoidance feature. That was also disabled when the car was driven by the computer, but if I read it right, the computer never had the authority to brake hard, that was left entirely to the driver

@MadScientist Your reading matches mine.

4:30 PM
@TimStone I'm still hoping that in 6 years Ashton Kutcher strolls out and it turns out this was all an elaborate prank

Nobody knew diplomacy could be so hard.
Context: Trump says Singapore summit with North Korea leader Kim is cancelled
> I was doubting whether the letter was actually written by Trump. Then I read this line: "You talk about nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God that they will never have to be used."

Suddenly all my doubts are gone.

I had no doubts
"tremendous"
"wonderful"
all these words
Of course he wrote it
Someone else probably copyedited it though

5:03 PM
@TimStone What the FUCK

@SaintWacko Time for South Korea to completely exclude us from the process

@puzzlepiece87 Honestly I hope they do

We're only hurting their talks.

I hope they move forward with the summit and peace talks without the US
Without the narcissistic, egotistical shitbag in charge of it
Goddamn

from what I understand the united states needs to be a signatory to a treaty because of the nature of the belligerants of the korean war
so
hooray

5:15 PM
@puzzlepiece87 time to hoard bottle caps

@MadScientist Godspeed and may you be placed in a control vault instead of a social experiment vault.

@puzzlepiece87 yeah I should listen to some Godspeed black emperor

@Unionhawk Neither North Korea nor South Korea were signatories on that armistice, I thought?

Good idea

5:21 PM
@Yuuki I don't remember exactly

POTUS right now issuing full pardon, posthumously, to boxing great Jack Johnson.

5:24 PM
this is a fucking galaxy brain take
I don't think I've ever seen something quite like this

@TimStone Okay, autoplaying a video is bad enough, but autoplaying a video of Trump talking? wtf

Ah, yeah, I had autoplay off, sorry >_>
@quartata It is incredible, and dangerous

> Unleash those troops not to instill fear, but as the insignia of urban civility and order. Do it not just to save black and Hispanic lives. Do it because it is the moral thing to do. All lives matter
all right

Like the premise is insane enough but trying to say that the Posse Comitatus Act is unfair is just over the moon

someone stop sending this guy glue

5:28 PM
@TimStone This is a good pardon btw but also he only did it because Sylvester Stallone asked despite e.g. McCain asking for it for a while now
Wow — @LauraAJarrett saw Emmett Flood leaving the Department of Justice alongside Nunes, Gowdy, Ryan and Kelly. Flood replaced Ty Cobb on Trump’s legal team earlier this year.
lol come on
Flood has no business being there, just like the whole meeting had no business even happening

@TimStone I enjoyed SU occasionally back in the day. I'm glad it existed.

@TimStone nuuuuuuuu
although it looks like they're making a new thing so it's not entirely bitter

Yeah but it integrates with your ~SoCiAl MeDiA~ and idk about all of that

yeah....

We can't have anything
Everything is in fact quite horrible

5:41 PM
~this is why the language in our harassment policy is "intent or effect"~
good that your intent was not this thing
congrats

tbf in this case I'm not really sure that was an important distinction
> In one incident, she said, Freeman "kept trying to lift up my skirt and asking if I was wearing underwear."
🤷

yea
no
absolutely not

@TimStone the intent is to provide players

5:55 PM
ahahahahahahahahahaha
sines v kessler started today, they heard like 5 motions to dismiss
and apparently spencey has a lawyer now!
the problem for him is apparently he has a terrible lawyer now
the plantiffs, on the other hand, are being represented by Roberta Kaplan, who argued and won US v Windsor in front of the supreme court.

@TimStone ugggggggggh

6:11 PM
Has The Selfish Ledger been discussed here yet?
It might count as news?

@Unionhawk And the DPRK did not sign, IIRC.
Since political cartoons are in newspapers, do they count as news?
My gut instinct says "not really".

They more discuss the news rather than are the news?
This is probably taking it way too far but maybe link to a news item on the topic, say what you feel, then link the cartoon as supplementary illustration?
Is it about North Korea?

Nah, I was just thinking of it because political cartoons are basically the same thing as random Twitter posts and image jokes.

Agreed imo

> Let's take a moment to appreciate the irony that Senator McConnell's ally in the state legislature is named Shell.

6:29 PM
@RedRiderX Note, the public response by X says this:
> “We understand if this is disturbing -- it is designed to be. This is a thought-experiment by the Design team from years ago that uses a technique known as ‘speculative design’ to explore uncomfortable ideas and concepts in order to provoke discussion and debate. It’s not related to any current or future products.”

too late, it's a liberal deep state conspiracy, next
Of course, when individuals do this in the context of books like the beloved 1984 they keep quoting in the comments section it's OK

@murgatroid99 Wait, so speculative design doesn't use a speculum?
Or speculaas?
I've been misled my entire life.

I actually hadn't watched that video before. Other than the stuff about manipulating behavior, there's some really interesting stuff in there about using data collection and synthesis to improve our understanding of psychology and sociology

6:47 PM
@murgatroid99 They say it was designed to be disturbing all along but nothing in that video seems to acknowledge the disturbing nature of the concept.
@murgatroid99 But yeah it is also a very interesting concept
Although I'm not sure the pseudo biological analogy helps explain the concept.

If you tell someone it's "disturbing" from the outset, there's no point in it; they won't do any thinking on it themselves
It needs to be implicit

The selfish gene's need is self preservation right? That's why it persists.
But the selfish ledger's needs are diverse, and that's why it will persist over multiple generations?
Maybe I just don't understand the selfish gene
@quartata But they connect the dots and portray positive scenarios.

Of course they do

It just seems strange to me that the video goes on for 8 minutes talking about how great this idea is and you say it's implicitly acknowledging how disturbing the idea is.

I suppose part of the problem is the medium. You see a video from a corporation, you're more inclined to look at it in a literal way
To me, at least, I don't see this as anything different from how many dystopic novels open
The music, the slow pacing of the narrator, it all seems deliberately crafted to me
That being said, I suppose a better perspective to look at this is just how the viewers respond

6:58 PM
Yes that does all seem crafted to convey a feeling.
But I think the vibe portrayed is more of a general Cosmos-esque "Isn't this big idea really interesting?".
What I really want to know is what is behind go/selfishledger
Is that a google intranet thing?
Because I feel like that could do a lot to re-contextualise the video.

I agree. It's not particularly fruitful to speculate on the motivations of, well, Google... but if this was really an "internal" video only you'd think they wouldn't bother to do any of this kind of pacing, to try to make it seem so logical

ayy

7:01 PM
effective the next board meeting

@Unionhawk !!

the current head of strategy and technology will take over on an interim fashion while they perform a national search
cc @Ash
The next board meeting is going to be interesting

Once you go beyond the "just an internal video" and view it as something more literary, then it's fairly safe to assume any reaction it provoked was deliberate

Lot of things happening

@MadScientist Turns out this is not accurate.
Well the numbers are a lot murkier anyway
That they could even be compared is still wild though

7:06 PM
It's hard to say for sure what "retiring" means here but you know, next week my interim replacement will be appointed feels...

@TimStone "I know who I am, I know who you are. Whether you agree with me politically or disagree with me politically — who we're supposed to be, right?" Garrett said. "That our nation was founded by imperfect people like a slave-owner named Jefferson on near-perfect ideas. When King David was God's favorite, he was doing things that were wrong. When Moses was asked to leave the Israelites out of Egypt he argued with God. Jefferson did bad things, but he had good ideas and that the American Revolution is perpetual."

That's just pathetic for Cy Vance

Sorry, everyone except the GOP, who ???

uh
I don't think they can actually comprehend that Trump canceled it lol

Like obviously NK was playing hardball but that's why you don't walk into something like this to begin with, lol
Cohen's book has been cancelled, Perez and the DNC just backed Cuomo because of course they did
