12:30 AM
@TimStone oh, this person is still a thing?
i forgot

> When asked if he has mulled over the backlash of Apu as a stereotype, Groening replied, “Not really. I’m proud of what we do on the show. And I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended.”

@Yuuki Not just conservatives, Hardball literally just ended with a take along the lines of "Trump has degraded the standards for speech and these jokes were people following his lead" (without mentioning any names or that it was about Sanders lol)

12:47 AM
@Wipqozn That misses the point by like a million miles, whew

1:08 AM
The White House tells me it has corrected its statement: #Iran had, not has, a “robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program.”
Glad there's not an extremely important and fundamental difference between the two
#BREAKING: Conservative lawmakers drafting articles of impeachment against Rosenstein http://hill.cm/yOuJkQS
rubs temples

kek'd

Looks like still no indication that House leadership would move forward with that nonsense though

it's just trying to appeal to their base for the midterms

Scooplet: Former Trump aide @AJDelgado13 has been fired by the Trump Super PAC @AmericaFirstPAC for unknown reasons. Delgado has been mired in a custody battle with former Trump aide Jason Miller.

it's completely meaningless since there are much better ways to get rid of Rosenstein if they really were going to

1:11 AM
@TimStone What is it with the GOP and their penchant for undermining everyone they don't agree with?

but this way they get to say "hey look we did a legislative thing vote for us"

Hm, she is not a nice person but the whole situation with Miller seems ugly and I wouldn't wish it on any parent
@Frank I don't pay close enough attention to other countries to see if it's abnormal but it often feels like our system is just a mockery of the process
Not even uniquely Republican either, Democrats acting like this is all a fun game is pretty sick in its own right when you consider the circumstances

@quartata but wouldn't that way avoid Trump firing him himself?

@TimStone I was gonna say that I didn't know if Dems did it too, but if they do, then...c'mon. Can't we expect better of our elected officials?

@Memor-X doesn't make a difference, and impeaching is wayyy harder
I mean quibbling the difference between "Trump firing him" and "GOP representatives 'firing' him" in 2018 is devoid of any meaning

1:15 AM
@Frank Not entirely in the same ways, but the way they fundraise and everything is framed like we gotta get one over on Trump for the lolz instead of, you know, people being in legitimate danger

@TimStone Negativity is a much easier sell than rationale. People respond to it, unfortunately.

also if it has to go through the Senate pence voting yes on it is basically the same as trump firing him directly

NEWS: In private, Pence's doctor raised alarms last fall within the WH over Ronny Jackson's conduct, including allegations of aggressive and intimidating behavior - and that he may have improperly disclosed Karen Pence's private patient info. My story: https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/30/politics/karen-pence-doctor-privacy-ronny-jackson/index.html
Trump spent a portion of the rally the other night attacking Tester for speaking out against Jackson's nomination to the VA, claiming it was made up

Y'know, let's all step back and appreciate the irony of Trump, of all people, calling for someone's resignation because they told a falsehood.

3 hours later…
3:56 AM
#BREAKING: A magistrate has committed Cardinal George Pell to stand trial over an historical sexual offence. BACKGROUND: https://bit.ly/2Ksl7Yi

4:26 AM
@TimStone who knew that maybe trump likes people who play fast and loose with the rules

6 hours later…
10:46 AM
please god, do not enable this
I do not want to be accountable for thousands of teenagers infighting in the chatrooms

@TimStone Yeeeeaaaaahhh

11:29 AM
Newly discovered emails show law enforcement officials were more concerned about anti-racism counterprotesters than neo-Nazis at Tennessee rally: https://trib.al/BT7dDCW
cool, cool

12:17 PM
Not really news, but don't think it's an appropriate read for the bridge

12:35 PM
oh yeah, happy May Day (also known as International Workers' Day) to everyone, or to the americans, happy Loyalty Day
no that isn't a joke

1 hour later…
1:47 PM
@Unionhawk Or to the British, happy pagan spring festival day.

"loyalty day" strikes me as very mccarthyist and that's probably exactly what it is

I was going to say that our Mayday is next Monday, but that's "early may bank holiday"

Also in Hawaii, it's happy island culture day.

Ave
@GnomeSlice oh dear god no
@Unionhawk happy may day for you too.
@GnomeSlice (this'd be better with a cw)

@Ronan In honour of the premiere, we celebrate her twice a year

1:56 PM
lol god dammit

2:12 PM
@Unionhawk Nothing new there
@GnomeSlice I like the idea of this
It sounds like a good way to find a place to chat about a topic without needing to hunt down an IRC or Discord for it

@SaintWacko like, in isolation that sounds like a not-bad idea, but in context it's "now you can experience all the horribleness of reddit in real time!"

@ToxicFrog I suppose, but it's not like the chatrooms are mandatory

It's also sounding like they're going to expect subreddit mods to be responsible for a lot of it, and as a mod of a subreddit with over a million subscribers, pls no

2:33 PM
lol the hill is not doing the WHCD next year
"there's simply no reason for us to participate in something that casts our profession in a poor light."

though, while it's good that this chummy event between those in power and those who are supposed to hold them accountable is on fire, it's on fire for the wrong reasons, so
or at least, the public face is the wrong reasons (I suspect they're more mad at the correct assessment that these people created Trump and are now profiting off him)

What it actually said is: "Bezos said that the relationship between his work life and personal life is reciprocal, and that he doesn't compartmentalize them into two competing time constraints."
Which is obviously bs because time is a zero sum game.

work life balance implies that there's a difference between work and life, why balance when you can just break down the barrier

> Historically, the world's richest man has a nontraditional approach to work: He makes time for breakfast every morning with his family, doesn't set his alarm before going to bed, schedules surprisingly few meetings, and still sets aside a few minutes every day to wash his own dishes.
Yes because people at Amazon definitely would not be fired for showing up whenever and they can all afford to hire dishwashers.
@Unionhawk You said it much better than me.

2:43 PM
> still sets aside a few minutes every day to wash his own dishes

And in many fewer lines.

Uh... this is supposed to be an achievement?

@Yuuki Look, Business Insider is in touch with modern people, okay?

I washed a ton of dishes yesterday.
Granted, it was because the dishwasher finally gave up the ghost after surviving a flood, but still.

They definitely are not a magazine for the super rich.

2:46 PM
In any case, it's almost as if Bezos is so rich that he can afford to be nontraditional.
I wonder why that is, Business Insider...

@Unionhawk They, in fact, speak for billionaires. Of all countries.
So yeah, I guess Lenin was wrong.

I mean, at the time
they've merely evolved

This guy is not giving up
Good for him, but I suspect he's gonna end up in jail

Apropos of nothing, "center-left" is a weird label to give yourself. Really, "center-anything".

2:58 PM
Why is that?
That merely allows for 5 positions on a spectrum instead of 3

It's not so much the concept, I've found, as it is the usage of the label.

I mean, among the left there are approximately 4 million positions on the spectrum

Sure, but usage of center-left implies 5 that the user cares about.
By definition there are infinite points on a line and this ain't even a line.

I mean yeah at that scale you can bundle all 4 million roughly together into like 2

Anecdotally speaking, the people I've encountered who self-ascribe that label also tend to be people who are emphatically not moderate, but rather pretending to be moderate out of some attempt to appeal to the mainstream.

3:00 PM
@Yuuki Yes though spinners gonna spin.
@Unionhawk If you over-differentiate you also lose benefits.
It just depends on what the user/audience want.
But you are certainly right

Ave
3:20 PM
@Unionhawk I wonder if they have anything planned for marx' 200th bday
which is in 4 days.

Other than some post like that probably not

@Yuuki my political compass comes out just left of center
Which I guess makes me 'far right' in 2018

I've got a post lined up making fun of a certain segment of DSA, a meeting with our Health Justice Committee, and also we're partying

Certain libertarian values don't help the case

it's a busy day!

Ave
3:22 PM
I'm tempted to add his birthday to the birthday reminder bot we have on a discord server.

3:35 PM
@GnomeSlice political compass is kind of an imperfect tool tbh, 8 values or whatever gets it more granular, but a strict left/right/up/down analysis is a bit reductive

It seems pretty accurate for me
Personally
But I mean if you're far left then anyone else is gonna seem far right to you

@GnomeSlice "left of center" in what country?
Because uuh, left of center in america is pretty right in the netherlands

@GnomeSlice I think you surround yourself with right wing media but that your politics are more complex but yeah sure

3:53 PM
@Unionhawk I follow leftie news sites too yknow

@GnomeSlice yep, this is describing enthusiastic consent and I agree it is a great thing that all people should follow

they don't always report on the same topics
Most of the right leaning news sources I follow are annoyingly pro gun too

🤔

4:11 PM
Important reminder:

@GnomeSlice Short summary?

@Yuuki Pls don't forget that Kim Jong Un is a tyrant, and probable mass murderer
Peace is good, but he's still a dangerous and terrible player
Also, lol. He says Trump's gonna take credit for it, 'like fat shaming Kim Jong Un on Twitter had anything to do with it'
I love Jonathan Pie
Also probably true
Although I do suspect the US had more influence here than he lets on

At the same time, the people that he's been the biggest threat to (i.e. Koreans) seem to be willing to come to the table. I don't think it's fair for Americans, who are in comparison safe from Kim Jong Un, to rail against the peace process if Seoul wants it.

@TimStone yeah I cannot ಠ_ಠ hard enough at how he described it but this is also an extremely weird thing

4:17 PM
Also like, probably technically a robbery?

Like, it's all well and good to remind everyone that he's a tyrant and a mass murderer but this is the exact kind of "unilateral world policing" that everyone claims to want the US to stop doing.

@Yuuki Are people railing against the peace process?
I haven't seen that, but probably I guess

I mean, calling for everyone to remember that Kim Jong Un is a tyrant and mass murderer tends to put a damper on the peace process given the direct implication of "well, we should put him on trial at the ICC as soon as peace happens". Which is not to say that he is not those things, but maybe keep in mind that the Koreans emphatically do not need reminders of who Kim Jong Un is.

The Hill to end attendance at White House Correspondents' dinner without "major reforms" http://hill.cm/29gPVyH
lmfao
> In short, there's simply no reason for us to participate in something that casts our profession in a poor light
🙄

@TimStone tfw you treat a dinner party like a government agency

4:24 PM
2 hours ago, by Unionhawk
though, while it's good that this chummy event between those in power and those who are supposed to hold them accountable is on fire, it's on fire for the wrong reasons, so

I just can't believe they're out here telling on themselves like this

@TimStone What profession, distorting news and even outright lying to support conservative positions? If so, I guess they did cast that profession in a poor light.

"HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST WE'RE ACTUALLY ENABLERS"

I love comedians roasting people and I didn't even find that bit very funny tbh
(I also don't know who any of the people she talked about are)

@GnomeSlice That might be why you didn't find it funny, tbh.
Really, the funniest part wasn't the comedy itself but everyone's distorted beliefs of what the jokes were and their reactions to said misunderstanding.

4:26 PM
It just sounded mean to me

Like, Wolf didn't ever make fun of Sanders's appearance and like half of the right-wing reactions are "it's beyond the pale to call Sanders ugly".

The "turns out the president is the one pussy you're not allowed to grab" line is pretty damn good

@Unionhawk Their next tweet was this hot mess and I hate them

It's like saying "I think <person> is just really mean and probably eats pizza with a fork" and <person> coming with back with "how dare you call me an ugly buttface that kick puppies?!"

Nah she was just being really mean in public on purpose and that's just kinda hard to watch i don't know

4:30 PM
@TimStone again, their angle appears to be more "it was because she made fun of SHS" but yeah I suspect they're more mad at "you created this shit and now you're profiting off him"

For one, I never said that. For two, now I'm a little concerned about your self-image and hobbies given that that's what you think everyone thinks of you.

she called that person straight up a liar like 3 times, if it was a protest, sure, but it was some government dinner thing wasnt it

You say that like you can't protest at a government dinner.
I mean, I'm not saying it was a protest.
But it's not like it being a government thing means you can't protest at it.

@GnomeSlice i know how most of those people are and while her delivery was awkward, the content was mostly great because of how true it was

(It's also not a government thing)

4:32 PM
shrug
I didn't enjoy it

messed up that someone would call the press secretary for president donald trump a liar. people should be nicer to members of the literal executive branch of the united states government

It was a roast, and it was exactly how a roast should be.

@Unionhawk Yeah exactly, like it was probably funny if you have like a burning hatred for whoever that woman was
Which the speaker clearly does

@Fluttershy I dunno, needed to go a bit more low and slow.

I don't really know any players in US politics by name so guess it was lost on me

4:43 PM
And at the end, everyone heaped too much salt on the thing.

The most seasoning the bulk of them have ever used

@GnomeSlice i don't hate sarah huckabee sanders but that she lies daily is not really disputed. Thing is that most media is not calling her out for the lies anymore because the trump admin lies so much that its been normalized
so michelle wolf was a reminder of "oh yeah i knew this was happening but kinda forgot that it was not a normal thing"
politicians usually lie around the edges: "we aren't raising taxes, we are adjusting govt revenues", but politicians don't usually say things like "sky is purple, green, and yellow anyone who says otherwise is an enemy of the people"

How dare they let *those* people in: this is amazing https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-airport-lounge-once-a-refuge-is-a-total-zoo-1525106268?mod=pls_whats_news_us_business_f
The article is about airport lounges

@TimStone holy shit

It is Peak WSJ

4:49 PM
Bah, paywall

Oh, that's amazingly dumb
Click through to the tweet and then to the article so the referrer is Twitter

The United Lounge used to be a refuge for first and business class passengers, but now, can you believe this, they let other people in
> tarnishing that 1% feeling;
Holy fuck

@TimStone Wow

"what's the point of being rich if I can't have exclusive spaces just for the super rich"

That's really stupid

4:51 PM
It is

@Unionhawk Was just copy-pasting the same thing

> Condoleezza Rice defends Trump leaving Iran nuke deal
Between this and Ari maybe the Bush Administration folk should just sit this one out

PROLETARIAT: What role do you fill in society? PETIT BOURGEOISIE: We’re the Assistant Bourgeoisie BOURGEOISIE: [clearing throat] Assistant *to the* Bourgoisie

@Unionhawk hue

4:58 PM
@Unionhawk yeppppppppppppppppppp

This eco-friendly phone booth solves the biggest problem with open plan offices. #tech http://goo.gl/j2DkpN
That...they're open plan offices? 🤔

@TimStone It's like a worse cubicle.

@TimStone we have a semi-open kind of deal (3 low walls) that honestly is fairly fine

@Unionhawk Exactly the same as my office

I could never do just tables
but the semi-open is a nice balance for me I find
since it makes approaching people to ask questions less of a confrontation than it was

5:09 PM
We have just tables currently, not sure what the new office will have and doesn't matter to me since I'm not there >_> <_<
Well, IKEA desks, they'd basically be cubicles if we added divider walls

I should have worked from home today

Not my preference but not my money so

it's may day for dang's sake
I mean I'm still doing exactly not a lot, just some learning, but I could be doing that, with some video game time woven in
like, pomorodo method style or something

@Unionhawk Belgium hasa day off today.

5:25 PM
@Arperum >:(

5:50 PM
So Facebook is apparently working on/releasing a dating component.

user15026
@Yuuki Curious how they'd actually do it

@Ash "No one knows you as well as we do, but we can find someone who could get close."

user15026
@Yuuki So uncomfortable!

6:08 PM
Alex Jones’ ex-wife started a website called http://custodywars.com lol
My god

Ave
oh god that is just
amazing

2 hours later…
7:53 PM
@Unionhawk (I finally looked it up and yes it is just red scare shit lol)
Tear gas used in Puerto Rico https://twitter.com/elnuevodia/status/991381202333523970

The fun part is that tear gas is meant to disperse rioting crowds and apparently the police set up barricades to keep the protesters from dispersing before they set off the tear gas.
:/

nice
this after the police were ordered to back off and didn't

To which the protesters retaliated by throwing objects at the police which is problematic, but that's like one strike against the police's three.

https://t.co/2sFtYEA8Si
For some inexplicable reason Kanye rolled up right into TMZ to say 400 years of black slavery was a choice and one of the TMZ staffers was like "My dude"

8:09 PM
@TimStone wat

🤷

@TimStone he's going to post 4 text conversations of his friends going "no what the fuck, a paragraph on 100 level US History"

He brought Candace O too, because why not

@TimStone huh

The video is mostly of the staffer talking though and his point is quite good

8:11 PM
The things a man's gotta to do to raise publicity for his album.
I don't like Twitter's video player.

It is Quite Bad

It pauses when the tab isn't in focus and it mutes when you scroll away.
So the only way to play the video is to have it on screen all the time.

Ave
someone apparently changed his pic on a site to this and idk if I should laugh or feel bad

definitely laugh

Ave
I can fix it but yeah I'll leave it like that.
nah I fixed it

9:12 PM
@TimStone yeeeeeeaaaaaah
“Michelle wolf, hold my beer”

Didn't this whole thing hit the news because the show considered cutting the role? This is basically them manufacturing their own hype.
> People at The Simpsons: "Hmm... maybe we should cut the Apu role, it seems kinda racist."
> Other People: "Now that you mention it, you're right in that it's kinda racist."
> Matt Groening, person at the Simpons: "Screw you, how dare you call it racist, you're just pretending to be offended."
Like... what?

10:19 PM
Deputy A.G. Rosenstein: “I can tell you that there are people who have been making threats privately and publicly against me for quite some time. And I think they should understand by now the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted.” (via CPSAN) https://t.co/bhXVJ4OCd6
Interesting response from Rod Rosenstein

10:34 PM
@Yuuki there were some activists raising questions about it for a while before that
hank azaria had a decent take about it

10:52 PM
Reupping this:
