Can you add some backup to explain why you think this might be the best approach? Either personal experience or references are fine, but answers on IPS are expected to have some explanation as to why you're recommending this. — Em C ♦ 53 secs ago

Hi Anthony! One thing that feels strange to me: are you sure she's from Soviet Republic? Or maybe you meant she was born there when it still existed? I thought Soviet Union didn't exist since 1991. — avazula ♦ 38 secs ago

Also, I think those are two different issues you've raised here- the first one being that you'd like to encourage your girlfriend to stand for her own opinions, and the other one being that you'd like to tell her that she doesn't have to do everything her family and relatives ask for. I think it'd be best to have two separate questions to address these two points, as these are different issues. Would that be okay for you? — avazula ♦ 47 secs ago

I think your premise is invalid. Romance is always on the table, more or less. Why wouldn't it? Even sexual orientation can be dismissed: you just haven't met the right man/women yet. But why is that a problem? Befriend and see what happens. — d-b 1 min ago

FWIW & AFAIR: "Soviet Republic" isn't "Soviet Union". The former is a form of government based upon worker's council (China is one, technically speaking, like all former countries of USSR). The latter started during Lenin's years (20's ?) and ended in 1991/92, and was a conglomerate of countries. — OldPadawan 1 min ago

Next time, take into consideration that you're not training a dog, nor grooming a housewife - "perfectly suitable for a young woman planning to have a family". I'd rather not venture an opinion on your sort of personality, but it's rather clear why you think "I was in an almost identical situation". Although this may be a great tool, the issue here is that the ratio of posts that do respect the new requirements is not high enough to me. The chances to stumble upon an old post that's not meeting new requirements seems too high, and a ribbon is very easy to dismiss, especially if you have ADHD or an issue with focusing. Also, I understand that it only applies for questions - what should we do when the question is on topic but the answers lack backup or something else that make them not suitable for the new guidelines? Can it be applied to answers only? — avazula ♦ 2 mins ago

That's my experience too. Plus, it is a rejection of sorts, just not motivated by any dislike you have for the person nor assuming a relationship was in the table at all. If you want you can make it clearer that it's about you already being in a relationship and not the person you are talking to not being someone you like... But that might sound like a "I like you but I'm with someone right now", and if that's not what you want to say then it's better to say what you mean clearly, in as little words as necessary and be done with it. — LordHieros 38 secs ago

Hi freebird, unfortunately IPS doesn't take questions asking us to make a judgement call about who was right/wrong - you can read more about what's on-topic and not in the help center. Instead, questions here need to focus on a specific goal - what are you looking to improve about your interpersonal skills? For instance, how you could have stopped things from escalating into an argument, or how to check if your input was wanted, something else? — Em C ♦ 12 secs ago

@NVZ We agreed a few months ago to refrain from using canned comments and most community moderating users stuck to this promise. It's worth mentioning, as Ælis pointed out in their comment, that most of the time these answers get flagged because someone decided to edit the question or post a new answer, which brought attention to the thread again. Most users don't go "hunting", and we don't specifically want to do this as a community, as this is really a lot to ask for. — avazula ♦ 1 min ago

@Upper_Case right now, the last question is still primarily opinion based I guess, and the combination of the other two might make it pretty broad. Freebird, if you had to pick, what would you like to do better next time: Avoid giving an impression of mansplaining, or better handle the accusation of mansplaining? (note, that's not about the practical value of arguing, but rather about what you can do instead of what you did now, to either keep a better relation or make it clear that you're not interested in any interaction with this woman if they act like that, for example). — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

Hi rocky! Sorry to hear you're struggling with this. We're a site for Interpersonal Skills, which are defined as the behaviours you use to interact with other people. Like others said, your question is about you, and your internal struggles, which makes it intrapersonal and off-topic here. @Tinkeringbell I think you're right about the second question. I just didn't want to cut it or change it too dramatically, since it seemed important to the OP in this situation and definitely requires interpersonal skills. — Upper_Case 1 min ago

Thanks.I added some references, found by Google on "dynamic for abusive relationships is bilateral low self-esteem."Next time I'll include them in the original answer. A point one of the references made is that most abusers have personality disorders, which means they can't change their behavior. So the solution becomes individual therapy to enable the abused one to avoid abusive relationships. after they leave the one they're in. — VWFeature 51 secs ago

What is the reason you think her denying your Instagram request is related to her father? Have you been neighbors long? What are the ages (approximately or exactly) of both you and the neighbor girl? — Upper_Case 32 secs ago
@Tinkeringbell well you just got my question clarified, I haven't had any thoughts on what my reaction on the criticism. I am unsure of the appropriate reaction to criticism by someone, also I coupled the demotivation and concentration part as they were closely related to my issues, Since I am new to this website, I apologize for that. — rocky 9 secs ago

@Upper_Case I am 19 and she is 14. I only wish to hang out in front of their house where her father has supervision. I live in the USA, so age gap friendships are taboo here unless same gender, unlike in Japan or other countries. I’m pretty sure that’s the reason her dad would deny. He gave me a frowning face when I said I was 19. We just met today, but I’d like to use a contact so I wouldn’t have to disturb them by ringing their doorbell. — CreativiTimothy 1 min ago

@CreativiTimothy In the USA age gap friendships are not taboo, but older men getting involved with young teenage girls is pretty problematic. — DaveG 15 secs ago

Unfortunately we aren't mind readers so we can't tell what was intended by someone denying your Instagram friend request. Questions asking asking us to divine the intents of others are outside the scope of this site. — sphennings 18 secs ago
@rocky don't worry, no need to apologize. We get many questions that need some editing or clarification, even ones by users that have asked here before. :) So, you distinguish three things: Snaps, pisses you off, criticizes you... Are you looking for a way to react to criticism that you find unfair (even after thinking it over for the day or longer?), or do you generally/eventually feel the criticisms may have a core of truth/are fair? Or do you think the criticism is fair, but given in a non-constructive manner? — Tinkeringbell ♦ 10 secs ago

@DaveG Yes, it is, especially since it's really sexualized in US. In the Netherlands, they're have opposite gender sleepovers where in the US, it's taboo: bostonglobe.com/arts/2011/12/22/…CreativiTimothy 15 secs ago
@sphennings This is why this sub is called "interpersonal skills". It's always subjective. The question can be reworded to make it not seem subjective even though it still is like all of the other questions I've seen on here, "How can you establish a non-awkward ground when someone in real life denied your Instagram follow request?" I'll delete this question if people still don't like this question, but I'd like to see a clear set of rules. One question is "Should I leave my dad?" with 5 upvotes, yet it's subjective — CreativiTimothy 25 secs ago

Not just in the US, in a lot is developed countries. A 5 year age gap between a 14 - 19 year old, and 20 - 25 year old, is quite different. It is not weird for the father to be worried that a young adult is taking such an interest in a young teenager. I would take the hint, and also do some introspection on why you want to befriend a very young girl. — MlleMei 22 secs ago
@MlleMei She is the only person near me who can teach me gymnastics. My other gymnastics friend is a 3 hour drive despite the same age. Also, I have trouble making friends with people my own age because I have a baby face and most 19 years old my age treat me like a 13 year old and give me advice all the time. It's very difficult. I would also like all the people here to take introspection on why they think it's okay to differentiate people's ages (ageist), but it's not okay to be racist. — CreativiTimothy 14 secs ago
@Tinkeringbell Hi :) Hmm. I added a relationship to the question. I think, since I wouldn’t be close to Bob, I wouldn’t know what he would like. — Belle 17 secs ago

I think your premise is invalid. Romance is always on the table, more or less. Why wouldn't it? Even sexual orientation can be dismissed: you just haven't met the right man/women yet. But why is that a problem? Befriend and see what happens. — d-b 31 secs ago
